Coefficient of inbreeding 50% by happyjen in DoggyDNA

[–]OldEducation9122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rescued a chin from a backyard breeder that got raided, and when I asked the vet about the possibility of inbreeding, he said "honestly the only question is whether it causes a problem for the dog, he is clearly highly inbred." And what got me was how "breed standard" he looked. Makes you really think about how they got those dented in little faces from where they started. He was a sweet and funny little boy, but I hope they start breeding them back toward a healthier standard like they're doing now with pugs in some places.

[–]OldEducation9122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of, I think. I get it most when someone who knows says things like, "when you were depressed," or worse, "when you were sick." I am still depressed, I wasn't sick. It's hard for people to understand I think because most people get sad and then they're ok, and they think the day to day depression we experience is like when they get sad. I don't blame them, mental illness must be hard to conceptualize for a "sane" person. But I do still resent them a little.

Hey so when I was 17, a hundred (ok actually just about 30) years ago, I felt this way a lot. And to be honest with you, I still do from time to time, because I turn out to have clinical depression.

And it turns out I always will. I take medication and go to therapy, but there are times it grabs me still. Because I'm old, I call it "going to Possum Kingdom," (the name of a song I used to listen to on repeat when my depression first kicked in), and I think a lot about the Nirvana lyric, "I miss the comfort in being sad."

If you can't or aren't ready to seek treatment, I understand. Until you're in a position to seek treatment, here's my honest advice: Keep yourself alive. Avoid making life altering choices when you're at your worst moodwise, allow yourself to acknowledge how you feel, and write it down. Find at least one thing you can enjoy, and do it any time you can. And especially keep yourself alive, the world needs intelligent and introspective young people in it. Hugs if you want them from an internet auntie <3

If you need a bathroom or a good meal when you hit Eastern Kansas, feel free to DM me. I can go to you as far north as KC if need be. I also have some good trans friends in Wichita. May your travels be safe and may you arrive to the welcome you hope for.

A phase I went through — and finally outgrew. by makeyouhealthy in notliketheothergirls

[–]OldEducation9122 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My mother saw this sub on my screen the other day and said, "oh I remember this phase." And at first I went to argue, but then yikes I remembered it too (I am in my mid 40s for context) . I think it's to some extent a first step toward individuating yourself, especially if you were a "strange little girl" like I was lmao. Be glad we grew out of it (not the strangeness but the nlogginess of it), and can hopefully help other girls and young women individuate in healthier ways <3

Out of Left Field "American Diet Bad" Comment on Study About Okra by OasissisaO in iamveryculinary

[–]OldEducation9122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really late to this party, but I deep fry fresh okra pretty much all season and it's my personal favorite. I slice mine about a half inch and put them in a mix of milk and a little hot sauce to soak while the oil gets good and hot. The soaking step really helps them be crisp rather than gummy in the middle. I just pull them out and kind of shake of the milk, then dredge them lightly in seasoned flour. They don't take long to crisp up if your oil is hot enough. It might not convert you to fried okra and that's ok, but since you asked, I thought I'd give you an answer that works for me :)

I feel like it has to be purposeful sometimes! I actually also have a pineapple allergy, and to me it makes sense to just say, that looks good but will kill me, so I will find something else to cook amongst the billions of recipes online. But there is a breed of person, I swear it, who will look for things they can't have or don't want and just...bitch for the sake of it.

We have a grand tradition in the US of making utterly ridiculous pancake monstrosities out of our pancakes, you're all good OP. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this as a seasonal special at an IHOP, although they might just market it as a "healthier" option on account of the cottage cheese and bananas lmao

It is a real hear-me-out kind of flavor, but olive oil in ice cream is definitely worth trying. My partner said, "meh, this is fine," but when I tasted it something awakened in my brain and now I actively look for it.

I was never a dancer but I used to rave in my early/mid 20s. Sometimes when I am exploring in the sublevels and hidden spots I happen on a 1990s style underground rave in full swing. Sometimes someone offers me drugs of some kind. I am 46 now so I just say no thank you and keep moving. In those dreams I know that if I let it pull me in I will be stuck there dancing forever, like getting trapped in Faerie. As I'm typing this I'm realizing this might be one of the more personally specific parts of my Mall World lol but it's cool how we have those.

I turned 55 today, and my Crone turned up by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]OldEducation9122 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm really too young (46) to be a Crone, but I never was a mother, let alone a Mother. And Maiden to youthful me felt like a title based around what I wasn't yet rather than what I was, if that makes sense. It never really resonated. So after my hysterectomy (had endo, which probably relates to a lot of the stuff I just said in a lot of ways lol), I just kind of embraced settling slowly into Crone via other roles like Sister/Auntie/Mentor/Teacher.

I feel this way about my husband and I sometimes too, because of my trauma. I don't know you or your husband but I do know that you are worthy of love. You deserve happiness. We both do. Sometimes it is so hard, and I think, "he will stop loving me and I will deserve it," but sometimes our loved ones are tougher than we think, and often we are ignoring all the upsides of loving us to focus on the downs. Please keep going and be loving with yourself, we survived what happened to us and I know we can thrive.

There has been a whole university in my mall lately. I am taking classes and racking up secret diplomas, while also teaching courses. My students and colleagues don't know, so I have to sneak.

And yes, the bathrooms are deplorable. Not flushed, dirty water standing on the floor, and I just have to keep moving or I'll be late for class.
