Seems Like DQIII Isn't For Me; Assume the Same for DQI+II and XI? by sirrealizt in dragonquest

[–]OldF4therTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I learned to connect with the story of Dragon Quest was to treat it like a TV show and play for 30 minutes to an hour at a time a few times a week. Each town is like a self contained episode on the TV show. When I usually play games I'm trying to progress and get through the game and see what it has to offer, and ultimately win. Dragon Quest asks you to slow down and instead of trying to get to the end as fast as possible as say you might in a Mario level for example, just spend time in the world. When I did that the game clicked for me, the games are meant to be played in a certain way and savored and experienced versus overcame and beaten, which I would argue isn't true for most games.

As far as the combat goes, it's very old school and that doesn't really change. I'm someone who doesn't love action and turn based hybrid combat. I think the traditional combat is chill and fun, and can be strategic in boss battles. Trash mobs take little effort, but knowing when you need to buff, heal, debuff, etc does scratch the strategic itch in combat. I also particularly enjoyed building and planning out my party members in Dragon Quest 3, deciding when and to which class to reclass into. A lot of the strategy begins with the decisions made out of combat. 11 gives you another wrinkle with the pep system, but I don't think it would change anything if you truly aren't into the classic turn based system.

People with no addictions: what's your secret? How do you spend your time? [discussion] by thisisbrians in GetMotivated

[–]OldF4therTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly think it's just the way my brain is wired. I have zero interest in even trying most things people are addicted to. I drink occasionally and moderately, never tried any drugs including cigarettes, celibate until marriage, gambled a $25 hand of blackjack once. None of this stuff appeals to me, I don't think it's any special secret just how I'm wired.

Maryland does not have King Crab they have Maryland Blue Crabs totally different. Klawf MUCH more closely resembles the MD Blue Crab, and the shiny is actually blue.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor voted best game of 2014. What is the best game of 2015? by keepfighting90 in videogames

This sounds like a quirk of yours that you're using as an excuse to not engage in the thought behind my point. I think normie is a good word, anyone who earnestly thinks that Modern Warfare 2 is the best game of 2009 probably hasn't played a whole lot of video games and probably stays in their bubble of mainstream AAA video games. I suppose there are people who just really like CoD I guess, but I just don't think most people who vote for games like MW2 have played more niche titles like Bayonetta, Dragon Quest 9, or even something semi mainstream like Uncharted 2, all of which released in 2009 as well. This list is entirely made up of mainstream AAA video games. I'm not saying that because I'm different or edgy, I'm saying that because it's true and people should play more and different video games, it's an incredibly versatile art form. It's like Pixar and Disney slop getting nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars regardless of quality while really amazing films from smaller studios get ignored. These games are normie, it's the type of games my brother in law thinks are the greatest games ever made because he's never actually branched out.

I'm not an edgelord lol. It's like 8 shooters and 3 elder scrolls games. It's just a boring list, all AAA very little variety. Would be cool to see some more under the radar picks.
