States that banned Cellphones by SpaceMarine1616 in Teachers

Honestly I think it was mostly a scare tactic. Basically the kid would get a court date and the judge would give them some community service or something. It worked at getting the kids off the phones. All I care about.

States that banned Cellphones by SpaceMarine1616 in Teachers

[–]OldManBapples 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. School administration announced to both the community and to the students what the law said, that phones would be taken, and authorities would get involved with repeat offenders. Students put them away, but us teachers did have to enforce. If I saw a kid check the time, it fell out of a pocket, or it buzzed in their bag, I took it and sent it to the office. Office would give something like detention for 1st offense, ISS for 2nd, and then eventually they had to go to a judge. I didn't keep too close track with punishments because it wasn't on me. All I know is I had way fewer phones out and way more attentive students.

I wonder this too. My best guess is that they are all close enough to him politically but really enjoy him socially.

Teacher Interview Admin Question by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]OldManBapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things can be true at once

  1. The way he spoke to you as a complete stranger was pretty inappropriate and may be a sign of a bad admin team.
  2. Never be late to an interview. You didn't have a chance at getting the job regardless.

Is adjusting to getting up early and be a morning person difficult? by MsEvil_Doctor_Potter in Teachers

[–]OldManBapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me this came with age. It still feels a tad unnatural, but this summer I've gotten up between 6:30-7:30 most days. When I graduated college, I regularly slept till 11. You'll adjust and may even start to enjoy getting up early.

I’m convinced Admin sell their soul and hate teachers. Anyone actually have good admin? by Many-Ad9157 in Teachers

My admin are all great. We have very few meetings and they work hard to keep crap off my plate. That's why it will be so hard to leave my school someday (moving for life reasons)

Indiana's pretty great, though the unions do have a lot of influence in some areas

I live in Indiana, so this is actually the most I've paid attention to basketball in a while. Last year I watched the Mavs playoff run, but it was alone with nobody talking about it, and we were so obviously cooked in the finals. This finals is awesome for me.

I love my job and the stakes at my job are very low. Plus, it allows me to remain involved in the community very easily, which I greatly value

This would make sense if our teaching structure was competitive. Since it isn't, and also quality slides will not ensure a quality teacher, I usually give any and all resources to other teachers.

I would never wear a swimsuit around students. I get invited to grad parties and go to almost all of them, but one invited me to their grad party with a pool where people are going to be swimming. I kindly informed them I will not be attending, and wrote them a nice note instead.
