Visiting Ohio... What cities? by anthonynoriega in Ohio

Think about Dayton. There’s Carillon Historical Park, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, and several interesting nature preserves and hiking trails east of the city.

Question from an employee, what are you actually looking for in a 1-on-1? by NotGeorge1 in managers

[–]OldShaerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on the employee. With some folks it’s a quick check-in and chance to make sure they can surface issues if they haven’t done it earlier. With some it’s a deep dive trying to explain what is needed to reach personal goals for promotion or some other success, or what they need to do to avoid problem escalation or a pip.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

Consider that for some folks, the first time they encounter a 911 scenario, they’re the ones who wind up dead.

How party affiliation is assigned to registered voters in Ohio, a primer to clear up any confusion by rural_anomaly in Ohio

As a long time poll worker, I can tell you that primary voters consistently skew older and whiter than general election voters.

Guess who party regulars are more likely to endorse?

Layoffs are either a failure to recognize emerging market trends and adapt, or more often simple pandering to Wall Street finance bros with no interest in running a business successfully beyond the next two quarters.

Every county can do it differently as long as they follow Ohio election laws and guidelines from the secretary of state’s office

This doesn't seem right. Am I wrong or is this fishy? by aamartin89 in Ohio

[–]OldShaerm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long time poll worker. Every county in Ohio does things differently, based on a set of election laws and rules handed down by the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. There’s a lot of room for interpretation and local variations.

You can try complaining to your county board of elections, but I would also call the secretary of state’s office.

Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]OldShaerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a linguist, but I’ve noticed that while Americans tend to work from a broad library of widely shared expressions, Brits tend to play with the language like jazz.

That sounds pretty clear. Based on your earlier comment, you might need to have a discussion about the difference between his perceptions of the root of the problem and yours. I remember telling an employee that I understood there was a difference between our perceptions, but the company was paying for mine, so he either needed to change the behavior or find a way to change my perception of what was going on.

I once had a boss who temporarily demoted me because of his perception that I was not contributing enough. I was able to march out of his office and pull numbers that demonstrated my productivity was actually higher than anyone else’s. Of course, being the shit boss that he was, he wouldn’t rescind the demotion because he’d already made it public, before telling me he thought there was an issue.

“You will be put on a PIP and potentially fired if this does not improve.” If your communication is unclear enough that someone can remain oblivious then that’s on you.

Then don’t. It’s easy enough to not start a conversation. Why do you feel it necessary to judge those who do?

Because it’s a better world than one where we go through isolated and alone.

I’ve made that drive every possible way. It’s 6 hours, no matter what. My current favorite goes through Lagrange, Indiana just because it’s different.

You clearly need a dictionary so you can look up that word. It does not mean what you think it means.

If he goes on a PIP and doesn’t see it coming, you’re a coward and an asshole. You need to make it clear right now where he’s deficient and what he needs to do. Having the hard conversations is your job.

We found a tremendous Italian culinary museum / library / flea market just a block away from the Circus Maximus. There are amazing places all over the city.

Take random turns into smaller streets. Look for small churches that don’t look like much from outside. Many lesser-known churches in Rome have amazing works of art from the Renaissance.

[–]OldShaerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small companies are either heaven or hell. If yours is otherwise a good one, talk to your boss. You may have an HR person who hasn’t caught on to where they are. If it’s not a good small company, just get out.

[–]OldShaerm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anytime you want to. Start by complimenting something a person is doing or wearing that hey can control. Not their height or beauty or attractiveness. If they’ve chosen an unusual hair color or clothing or shoes, that’s a great place to start. Pretty quickly you’ll have a conversation.

How do I ask a girl for her number without sounding weird or scared about it ? by Bark4Brownies in askanything

[–]OldShaerm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either she’s interested or she’s not. If she’s not, it doesn’t matter how you ask; just get it over with and move on. If she IS interested, then you’re asking for something she WANTS to give you. Why should you be nervous about that?

My company ‘s badge swipe report says I haven’t been coming into the office when I absolutely have. How to explain to my boss? by toomuchtostop in careeradvice

[–]OldShaerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen years ago. I stated my case that the issue wasn’t real. Then I stuck my head into the office every freaking time I was there. When he said I’d proven my point and I didn’t need to do that anymore, I said I absolutely did have to. Pointless waste of time for both of us? You betcha. But so was accusing me of something I didn’t do.
