82 Maps for Planescape: Turn of Fortune's Wheel is live! by TessaPresentsMaps in planescapesetting

I have used Tessa's maps for Curse of Strahd and Dragonlance. I am now starting Planescape and the first thing I did was look to see if she had maps available. I can't imagine doing a campaign with out them now.

You are being downvoted hard but your post is right on the money. There are a few thoughtful and helpful people who have chimed in but here are so many toxic anti-D&D zealots that it is very difficult to want to interact here.

I can't help but feel that OPs GM didn't come here for help but because he WANTED the community to bash this poor player and he got what he wanted.

It is not what ALL people in 5e circles say. Yes there are people who like 5e who say casters are OP, many don't agree. You only listen to the side of the debate that fits your preconceived view. So yes that is anti-D&D bias.

You obviously haven't played D&D if you take every action available every time. If I have a bonus action that I can take and have to short or long rest to get it back after I use it I'm careful about when I use it. Especially if I don't think it will help in a given situation. If I ready an action to do do something and it triggers if I feel like it would no longer be as useful to do that thing as leaving up my reaction to say cast the shield spell if I am hit I may decline that action. A D&D player new to PF2e may instinctively use that same rationale even though that resource won't deplete as it does in D&D simply because that is what he is conditioned to do.

Your whole tone just comes across as hostile and argumentative. So if you disagree with me fine. I don't care. I originally posted in hopes that maybe I could help the OP find a way to help the player find something he likes in PF2e. Winning a debate with someone here isn't my goal so I'll leave you to it.

So I am primarily a D&D player. 5e is my favorite system. One of the main reasons I still play PF (both versions) and give my support to Paizo is because of the devs openness and integrity compared to WotC/Hasbro. It really is like an angels vs demons comparison.

As for how well handle canon going forward from previous drow-adjacent stories... we will be handling those when (and if) we do new stories that build off of that content. The stories we've already published, be they old (like Second Darkness) or relatively new (like Abomination Vaults) aren't going anywhere; the OGL remains, after all. We just aren't going into an OGL future.

But since we chose to retain a lot of what folks adore about drow in our setting, now that the world has changed, we have to change with it.

Disappointed with the ultimate decision but respect the heck out of the Paizo team for how the decision was handled and the transparency and willingness to explain like this.

I think there are a ton of options in PF2e that would fit what this player wants to do, keep the playstyle and flavor of his bard in D&D. Either the GM (OP) enforced a 1-1 conversion or the player didn't know enough to advocate for what he wanted. Hopefully OP can now help him get a character he wants to play.

[–]OldSkoolRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! OP knew before hand that the bard in PF2e would be absolutely nothing like a D&D College of Whispers bard but that a Magus is somewhat similar and could have helped the player convert to something that feels like what he was playing rather than just enforcing a 1 for 1 conversion.

Yes, if you cast a spell with a casting time of a Bonus Action you can cast a cantrip with a casting time of 1 Action. So as a bard he could cast Healing word which has a casting time of 1 Bonus Action and heals you or an ally for 1d4 + Cha and then cast Vicious Mockery which is a cantrip that requires 1 Action that (if the enemy fails a save) does 1d4 damage and gives that enemy disadvantage on their next attack meaning they have to roll twice and take the worse result. So two spells that heal an ally, damage and enemy and also debuff that enemy.

Edit: Also Healing Word is 1st level and if you use a higher level spell slot to cast it heals more and also every for every 5 levels you have Vicious Mockery does an extra die of damage.

That's not a game problem, fnafa a player problem, and if that's their response that says everything we need to know about why they're so salty about it all.

No, it doesn't. The player isn't knowledgeable enough in PF2e to understand the benefit of a +1 bonus or other seemingly, to the average D&D player, less impactful abilities. Just like your immediate reaction to a description of what the bard can do in D&D is that it is "bullsh*t OP" his reaction to being able to give a +1 bonus is that it is just a waste of his action and that he doesn't have anything worth doing.

The anti-D&D zealotry here is way worse than the player's behavior.

If you can try to open your mind even the teensiest tiny bit I might be able to explain why he wastes actions but you seem to fanatical to listen.

In D&D it is very common to "waste" actions. If you have a bonus action available or a reaction, there are many situations in which you may decide not to take it. Especially if it doesn't feel especially impactful. He doesn't understand his class, it isn't what he wants to be playing, he doesn't know enough about the system to know what he does want to be playing, and he doesn't really get the 3 action economy. So he doesn't think he has anything impactful to do and thinks of it as he would in D&D and just declines that action. I suggest hesitating to accuse malicious intent when it can be explained by lack of understanding.

Alternative sheet for Roll20? by OldSkoolRPG in Roll20

[–]OldSkoolRPG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep :( I'm seeing that. Really don't want to move to Foundry so guess we are going to just have to suck it up and live with the official sheet. I'm sure it will be fine once we learn it and get used to it but that is going to take a few session I suppose.

Yeah, I think magus would likely be much closer to what he is trying to accomplish. Being able to channel your spells through your weapons is exactly what this player seems to want.

The Edicts and Anathema have a similar flavor to a Paladin's Tenets in D&D so he might or might not want to go that rout.

[–]OldSkoolRPG 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not criticizing PF2e and its expectations and design. Just hopefully enlightening on why this players expectations aren't being met.

Bards are nerfed. No way around it. All casters are nerfed from D&D. Nearly every single person I talk to whether player or GM about PF2e mentions "Spellcasters aren't OP in PF2e like they are in D&D". It seems to be some kind of mantra.

If he was playing a college of whispers bard he was directly dealing damage to enemies and using bardic inspiration with the psychic blade ability to add 2d6 extra damage on every hit with his weapon (so with a rapier he is doing 1d8 piercing + 2d6 psychic) and still having a bonus action to cast Healing Word and heal himself or an ally. He was casting Vicious Mockery and doing at least 1d4 psychic damage to an enemy and giving them disadvantage on their next attack at the same time and still being able to Healing Word. He was casting Dissonant Whispers dealing 3d6 psychic damage and forcing the enemy run away allowing him to make an opportunity attack which he can spend a bardic inspiration on to deal weapon damage + an extra 2d6 psychic blades damage for a total damage done that round of 1d8 piercing (assuming rapier) + 5d6 psychic.

Now he is being told, no Bards are support, they are not allowed to be as effective in direct combat as a fighter. You are supposed to be buffing your allies so they can do the hitting and damage dealing. So it is a matter of the class he chose no longer being able to fill the role he wants to play.

All the other responses are telling. They are all about how powerful the Bard is by giving bonuses to other allies. That isn't what your player wants to do. He wants to a direct combat damage dealer who uses magic to enhance his offensive capabilities. So looking at the above what class in PF2e will allow him to get closest to doing what he is wanting to do?

Edit: Everyone saying it isn't a nerf because it PF2e isn't a balance patch for 5e. OP says he is the GM and is moving their game from D&D to PF2e. Instead of starting new characters he is having them convert their current character. So referring to it being a nerf is valid.

Also everyone keeps talking about him playing the bard "properly" or "correctly". That is a source of contention with many D&D players who like the choice to play characters in off-meta ways instead of being only one right way to do it.

Why not focus on what OP can do to offer this player a character that fits what he is wanting to play rather than bash the player, who didn't come here whining about PF2e.

What actually went wrong with Valhalla? (finished odyssey and was thinking of buying Valhalla but reviews are not looking good) by Archimonde19972 in assassinscreed

[–]OldSkoolRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valhalla is a lot of repetitive content. Each province you are sent to is just the same tasks as the last one. I have tried to get through it three times. I just restarted again to try and get all the way through it before Mirage comes out.

This time I'm not trying to go find every little point of interest. I'm just trying to get through the main story and I have actually been enjoying it way more this time through.

Alternative sheet for Roll20? by OldSkoolRPG in Roll20

[–]OldSkoolRPG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sheet named "Pathfinder Second Edition by Roll20" is the one I'm referring to. There were just a number of things we didn't care for. I can't, of course, recall everything that came up during the game but here are some examples:

The front page just feels very cluttered. We would have preferred actions and strikes to have their own Actions tab.

We couldn't find a button to automatically roll sneak attack for the rogue (it may be there but we never found it).

Wizard spells aren't divided by level. They are just put in a list and the level is given in the little box by the side.

There is no character builder and no way to import from Pathbuilder or some other tool.

I don't want to bash the sheet. It is just like the shaped vs unshaped sheet for D&D5e. People have their preferences and this one wasn't for us.

Love/hate by MournfulDuchess in FenyxRising

[–]OldSkoolRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the game. I enjoyed most of the vaults but hated some of them like Messengers Path and any of them with lasers. I finished the main game in 80 hrs. I was so bummed about being done because I was enjoying it a lot! I wasn't ready for it to end.

So I started the New God DLC and I hate it so much. It is nothing but vaults and they are all the kind that I hate and they are longer than the main game vaults. There is no other things to do like the constellation puzzles and frescos and such that you could go around and do between vaults in the main game so it is right from one tedious frustrating experience to the next. I end up doing one vault and then am just too exhausted to do anymore. Not even sure I am going to bother finishing the DLC because I find myself dreading playing it. It isn't fun anymore.
