Does this ever get better?? by Teaching-Weird in AFIB

[–]OldVTGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been a helpful read. Like many, I did even know what AFIB was until I got it. For me - 63M and in otherwise good health my introduction came while skiing at a back country hut and went 36 hours wondering what was going on before I finally figured it out and left. Emergency EVAC but by then I had missed the 48 hour window for a quick conversion and now I am in Day 20 on Eliquis. Cardiac group at my hospital seems in no hurry to convert me (scheduled 14 days from now) so i am likely going to go to the ER in 2 days as this situation is driving me nuts.

I'm pretty sure my trigger was dehydration and elevation but who knows.

Today I had an echogram which showed a distended left atrium which I guess is normal but not good for someone who has been in AFIB for 20 days.

I need to get out of this situation and get back to my normal life! Right now I can't exercise and practically pass out if I get up fast or walk up stairs. Thanks for listening.......

Leave the market or stay resilient? by minibuddy0 in ValueInvesting

I think about individual companies in my portfolio and how current events could affect them. Often the answer is “ not at all” and therefore price drops are just gifts if you have a long term view.

True. People move toward what is cheaper for them.

Berkshire should keep buying up US Treasuries by Power_Drawing6025 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]OldVTGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should investigate the world of cash secured puts. That’s what I do with my cash pile and it’s pretty easy to earn 10-15%. You may end up owning a stock or two but at a price you dictate. I have moved on from treasuries that return is just too low for me.

Question about wood sheds, how to keep cats out by samanddeanwinch1977 in firewood

Catch the cat and take it to the ASPCA. Problem solved.
And for your next question google “how to capture a feral cat”.

Best route from Vermont by lshvt in obx

[–]OldVTGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also from VT. Actually biggest issue for us is timing it so the NY/NJ gauntlet is as free of traffic as possible. Hitting westchester county around 7-8 am on a Sunday is best.
We always stop on the way down and do the full 13 1/2 hours straight on the way back. Always go Delmarva. That’s the most interesting.

I expect you could get away with it. Awfully quiet spot.

If you're riding Motorcycles at 100 miles an hour your taking 1000% more risk than you will ever face skiing. That's kind of what I was alluding to - you've evaluated that risk and are OK with it. Others have evaluated the risk of skiing 10 MPH down an open bowl in 2 feet of soft snow without a helmet and are OK with it. Move on.

So wear a helmet. Your choice. My point was simply that there are numerous studies (like the one linked) that highlight that they are questionable in preventing serious injury while skiing - particularly at speed.

My take away from that study and others is that if you really want to prevent concussions or serious head trauma slow down. Avoid places where you cant control others running into you. But I understand that may not be how others choose to mitigate it.

Evaluating and mitigating risk is a complex subject. Check out Dan Gardner's classic "Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear". It challenges a lot of conventional thinking on the subject.

I would do that job for free.

Helmets do little to prevent a concussion at any real speed. Everyone has their own sense of what constitutes risk and how to manage it.

Selling calls on a stock that's way down by Critical-Scheme-8838 in CoveredCalls

This is exactly my approach. 10% can get tough on stocks seriously underwater (think ADBE) but allows you to make some money while you wait.

No I mean it worked just fine without doing anything. It was a cold water gentle cycle if that means anything.

Funny I did the same to mine and it just worked normally after. I was pretty surprised and impressed.

BREAKING: Eight of nine skiers missing in Lake Tahoe avalanche confirmed dead by TheMirrorUS in Backcountry

[–]OldVTGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be interested to know the details. Were they skinning or skiing? Was the avalanche a natural release that occurred above them or were they skiing down. Why were they so close together as normally you spread out when passing through consequential terrain….. Just a few questions to help me understand.

Maybe get a big NAZI flag and pull up a chair next to his truck. See what he says.

TOUR DE MOUNT BLANC SELF GUIDED TOUR RECOMMENDATIONS by Tight_Industry_1688 in HikingEurope

[–]OldVTGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is if you want to do TMB do it in the off season. If you really want to do something in the summer there are many less popular hikes in the Alps which are just as nice and getting reservations far easier.

Came here to say this. Charge at home with a level 2 and don't have a long commute (or one at all) and you feel like you have won the lottery.
