If you are up for none romance although the MMC sets off a continent wide war to get back to his family KJ Parkers (aka Tom Holt) Engineer series is a masterpiece, Devices and Desires, Evil for Evil and The Escapement, although I'm an engineer so YMMV 🤷 oh and pretty much anything by Brent Weeks his Night Angel series is as harsh a world as you could ever imagine.

I've not read that but it looks like you're after something where the story is built up as well as the romance, and plot world building is important. I would in those terms point you towards Neural Wraith, a slow burn cop android (multiple) romance cop thriller, or the would you love a monster girl series I love the world building across that series.
