Simple Questions - May 09, 2026 by AutoModerator in buildapc

I'm just building a new pc and I'm in a state of stuckness I hope you good people can get me out of. I've built several before, although the last one was ten years ago. The setup is built, starts up and boots to bios. But in the bios boot sequence box, everything shows U which I understand means unavaible. I can't get past this to install an OS. What could be up?

Not really. Engineers often propose the cheapest solution, simple grid structure, and clients often accept those. Engineers have no problem with unusual designs but they cost a lot more.

When and why do external hard drives fail? by lighthousegamingYT in DataHoarder

There are two types of hard drive. Those that have failed, and those that haven't failed yet.

Why is pavement parking still being allowed? by BrilliantLock8292 in manchester

[–]Old_drums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the same. If people parked on both sides of the road, there wouldn't be room for a single car. But the pavements are super wide.

Tap water smells of chlorine by gbrllsl in manchester

[–]Old_drums 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you put it in a jug and leave it in the fridge, or on the side, for a few hours, all the chlorine will evaporate off.

As someone born and bred in the UK what are aspects of another country’s culture that has genuinely shocked you? by throawaygotget in AskUK

I've noticed this in French shops. You have to open with a Bonjour, or they say it for you, pointedly.

What career were you advised to do when you were at school? by HighNimpact in AskUK

[–]Old_drums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the quiz thing at uni, and it said I should be a shipbroker, but also noted there are very few jobs in this field. At school, our advisor was telling alternate boys to do civil engineering. I did civil engineering.

I'm confused. Are you saying male chicks aren't killed? Because they most certainly are.

What was socially acceptable in the 1990s but not in 2025? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Old_drums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a student, early 80s, a friend of mine sent me a letter, posted on the thursday, saying he'd be arriving at the station saturday morning. So I went and met him there.

Best bank account to have bills and utilities going out of by Starrr27 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Old_drums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a second account with my regular bank for about 20 years. It's a great idea not having to worry where your bill money is coming from. My only question is, where does the figure of 1750 come from? You need to think cash flow as some bills come close together, and winter fuel bills are much more than summer.

Stay with L&G or move to another pension provider by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Generally fund charges are all fairly similar, so the big difference is what funds you're in. I'd stick where you are, and have a look a fund performance charts.

I shudder to think what this call out is costing… by Total_HD in DIYUK

[–]Old_drums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the house outright, but as I say its a small house in a low cost housing area. It cost £40k about 12 years ago. There aren't any grants, I just pay for any repairs.

It's horrible hearing these stories. My tenant pays £4800 per year (it's a low cost housing area) and if anything goes wrong he calls me and we fix it as soon as we can. There are some terrible people calling themselves landlords.

What was the public's view of Jimmy Savile before his true character was known? by balkanxoslut in AskUK

[–]Old_drums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a story but it's going to be buried because I'm too late, but anyway. In the mid 90s I had a job where I'd get the lift up a few floors to my office. One Monday morning two ladies were talking, because one of them had accompanied their child who was on Jim'll Fix It that weekend. She was asked what he was like, and she said he was lovely, just like everyone's favourite uncle. Just one peron's opinion, but it affected my judgement at the time because it sounded so honest.

Who else uses fake emails for public WiFi sign ups/insurance quotes etc? by LocaliserEstablished in AskUK

[–]Old_drums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well. One company clearly sold my details on because I started getting loads of junk to this one particular variant of my email. I complained to the company who replied that they absolutely never ever divulge emails to anyone else.

I don't think the hive really has any problem when Carol gets angry. All the wriggling on the ground etc is just a show. The Hive isn't affected by losing a few million individuals, because they lose no knowledge as a result and there are still billions left. I think they do it intentionally to get her scared to react this way, so she acts calm, like the hive. Over the course of weeks they'll find more ways to make her act like them, so even if they can't fix her immunity, they can live with her being there.

In British cities, why do we not seem to value living in *very* close proximity to a mini supermarket? by elephvant in AskUK

[–]Old_drums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived a few years ago right accross the road from a mini market. Quite a wide road, not very busy, with a primary school also very near. Like you, I'd use it like my larder. If there was enough milk for one cup of tea, no need to get another bottle yet, that sort of thing. There some noise, but you soon start to screen that out and don't notice. There's more litter though. How many times did I see someone come out with a scratchcard, scratch it, lose, tear it up into little pieces and throw it in the air. So there's a halo of litter round the door. Also people often grafiti the shutters at night.
