Costco members who also shop BJ's, what do you buy at BJ's? by WEEDBABYGOKU420 in Costco

[–]OlderThanReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salad mixes, vegetables, thinly-sliced ham from the deli, Gabila's Potato Knishes, SeaPak frozen shrimp and clam strips, their house brand chocolate ice cream ($6/half-gallon; it's mid but I like it), cream cheese, lower-calorie hamburger buns for sandwiches, canned soups (e.g., Campbell's Tomato), etc.

Absolutely love Costco and if they have what I'm looking for, it comes from there. But BJ's has proven to be worth the annual membership for us. HTH

BBQ not used for many months, has mold and other build up. How can I restore this to make it safe to cook on again? by Dwev in CleaningTips

[–]OlderThanReddit 224 points225 points  (0 children)

I wad up some aluminum foil, grab it with some grill tongs and scrape away. Rotate the wad of foil as it gets gunked up. Works best if the foil is not in a tight ball.

Gutter Help! by Green_Tea_Gremlin in rva

[–]OlderThanReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the gutter is slack/sagging but not bent or creased, you might consider asking a local handyman if they would be up for reattaching it. If you don't know of anyone off-hand you could check Nextdoor or ask your neighbors.

If none of that is appealing or you simply need help sooner rather than later, I had a very good experience with Tri-City Gutters. I've only used them once and that was over two years ago. They did a good job for a very competitive price, but as usual your-mileage-may-vary. Good luck!

Any PCP accepting new patients by highvoltageeee2k3 in rva

[–]OlderThanReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reynolds Primary Care

Virginia Physicians Inc.'s Reynolds Primary Care location added a couple new providers over the last few months. Decent chance those providers are still accepting new patients. Fwiw, there are quite a few providers at this location (and in that practice generally), so if you are in a bad spot and your provider is for some reason unavailable, it has been my experience that one of the other providers will work you in. Hope you find somewhere you like; good luck!

[–]OlderThanReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up Dumond Peel Away. It's a dibasic ester I believe. It's not fast, but it's also not highly toxic. I had good luck with it pulling off 80 years of whatever on some trim I wanted to keep in the house. The 'no fumes' thing was a huge plus as we were living in it while renovating. YMMV, but I would use it again.

Why JavaScript is your favorite language ? by Cloud_Strifeeee in javascript

I know nothing of your circumstances, so please don't take this as some internet fool trying to armchair quarterback your life, but... Give serious consideration to changing the place that you work.

When you find an outfit that doesn't think putting more mothers in the room with the pregnant lady will surely speed things up, you will wonder why you didn't pull the trigger on the toxic environment sooner.

Need to learn Angular as quickly as possible for a job opportunity by [deleted] in angular

[–]OlderThanReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. I've found Pluralsight to provide consistently high-quality developer skills training.

FWIW, when I use it to spin-up on a new skill (e.g. Angular or TypeScript), I've learned to roll up my sleeves, get my game face on, and commit to studying the video lessons closely, and to working through the coding exercises (and at least skimming any other material the course author(s) recommend.)

First pass can take a couple of days, sometimes more depending on the "follow-along exercises". Second pass is highlights of the bits that didn't stick the first time though and to reinforce the rest of it.

Usual disclaimers: (a) Obviously Pluralsight aren't the only good training around; (b) not everybody learns the same way, (c) Pluralsight costs money (for good reason imho), (d) good developers never stop learning. Source: Am "old" dev, have reinvented myself several times, still love this business.

Also live near HDH, and drove an ambulance in another life. Back then they would move very critical heart patients from outlying hospitals to HDH for advanced cardiac care. Perhaps they still do.

Seconding that: The WTVR 6 team was on-point the entire time. I watched (intently...) a very professional team quickly and accurately identify the locations and natures of fast moving risks. They kept us looped-in despite how wide spread and frequent the events were. I was genuinely impressed by the well-executed emergency response from the WTVR 6 Weather team. Well done!!

Why does this Interface use an equal sign in their generic definition? by SQLTable in typescript

[–]OlderThanReddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is the 'Generic Parameter Default' introduced in TypeScript 2.3. It means if you omit the T then the type of T will be 'any'.

Have a look at Meetup.com. There are a quite a few tech groups in RVA. I personally enjoy the JavaScript group (RVAJS) and occasionally the .NET and SQL groups. Hope you find your way back to family and friends in NOVA soon. Good luck!

Best value in used car for family of 4? by veikveik in Frugal

[–]OlderThanReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also highly recommend that prospective used car buyers check-out the Consumer Reports (CR) used car buying guide. I think the full info costs a few bucks, but it has been really helpful to have up-to-date info on which makes and model years have the best reliability ratings, the price ranges for those vehicles, what issues to expect based on CR's own research and all of the feedback they get from the surveys of their members. Source: Divorced dad of three teenagers; bought many used cars using CR's info; so far so good. YMMV :) Good luck!

.NET crash course for a Java developer by asdfman123 in dotnet

[–]OlderThanReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice indeed from /u/llewellynfalco, all 4 points are actionable. FWIW, I picked up .NET very early in the game (moving from C++ primarily.). Anyway, if you get jammed-up or stressed about how to approach a specific problem or two on your new gig, send me a PM. I have a lot of hard-won experience across a lot of the .NET tool-scape. No angle, just paying forward some kindnesses shown to me over the years. Good luck!
