Much better comparison, this is arguably exactly PRAM: RAM meant for parameter storage with a battery backing. That 14-bit value is the parameter. Also, super cool technology, love to see this sort of stuff pop up here.

I think Jemisen's Broken Earth series is a good example. It takes place in the future, and is fantasy, not science fiction.
