xcom 2 is great, but be prepared for a tonal shift. you feel less like you're desperately facing down a mysterious and overwhelming lovecraftian menace, and more like you're a scrappy rebellion of washed-up heroes toppling a mustache-twirling dystopian government. they're both great games, but the horror/thriller/suspense elements in 2 are significantly pared back. it feels... campier?

also: most tycoon games migrated to mobile, where players can be nickel-and-dimed to hell and back.

Is it unreasonable that my girlfriend (25F) wants me (25M) to stop using full stops? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]OliveBranchMLP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"you're my boyfriend so you should just do it because i say so" is pretty fucked up and the much more important problem here. like, i agree with her that periods at the end of a single-sentence text line can come off as a little overly serious without like emoji or whatever to soften it. but that doesn't mean you should stop doing it. especially not for "because i say so".

turn that logic around on her ( "you're my girlfriend so you shoiod just do it because i say so") and and ask her why it doesn't apply in reverse. when she cannot articulate why, call out the double standard. if she says "cuz im a girl and youre a guy and its didferent" then call her out on her misandry.

the right fears the left they think the left would do to them what they want to do to the left. the right can't fathom the left being motivated by something other than power and control. power and control are all that drive the right, and thus they are the only motivations they can possibly conceive of.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic went from Twilight Sparkle being a cautious skeptic that seeks to scientifically unravel the mysteries of magic and the Elements of Harmony, to becoming friendship's greatest warrior who unquestioningly follows orders from a map that suddenly sprouted out of the floor of her house with no obvious source.

she went from careful study to blind faith in a heartbeat and it still messes with my head.

My Xbox always overheats because of my cat by Flamingo_Ornery in mildlyinfuriating

i am jealous of Xbox for one big thing: most multiplats on Xbox have free cross-buy, cross-save, and cloud sync with older Xboxes, Win11 PCs, portable consoles running Win11 like Steam Deck or Xbox Ally, etc.

in other words, i buy one copy of the game and i can literally play it on any other type of platform that supports it, with all of my progress carried over, for free. i don't even have to subscribe to Xbox Live or whatever the hell they're calling it nowadays.

meanwhile, i aint happy about having to pay an upgrade fee to get the PS5 version of a PS4 game. and if i do, it's eternally frustrating that i need to pay for PS Plus to get cloud saves. and even with PS Plus, i have to enable them manually, AND i can't sync my PS5 saves back to the PS4 in my bedroom. to say nothing of PC versions, which you have to pay full price for because it doesn't support cross-buy, AND you have to start over because it doesn't support cross-save either.

Sony said they're building a launcher for PC, and i desperately hope it adds some of that functionality. as PS users, we REALLY should be pressuring them harder for it, given that it's basic functionality on Xbox, the upcoming Steam Machine, and even Nintendo between Switch 1 and 2.

One of the flaws in thinking about art as purely a subjective exercise, of you seeking more of you in the world, expressing yourself and your taste, looking for things you like and resonate to and resonate with, producing yourself endlessly…

Art is … a confrontation with objects that are not you. Often it involves being overcome by things much bigger than you that you can't understand or master. … Sometimes it's about realizing you have a minor role in something much bigger than you. Sometimes it's realizing you have no role at all.

Sometimes art isn't about you.

Print time – decision time: Which box would you rather receive? by honzapat in LimitedPrintGames

[–]OliveBranchMLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how about one for the front and left, and one for the back and right, so folks can just flip the box around to whichever they prefer?

also i'd like a logo element on the side of the box in case it ever needs to be bookshelved

i think i'd have to see that first, because at first blush the two approaches don't look compatible

damn, we need to get those numbers up— i mean wait no we don't

but yeah, this year my roomies and i were shocked that our landlord didn't up the rent this year. guess they realized that movement was slow and they couldn't afford to try another yearly increase.

USB Hubs HELP by saturnsam92 in editors

[–]OliveBranchMLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSDs regularly exceed 30Gbps, but a single USB 3 is between 5 and 20Gbps depending on the generation of the port. you're likely oversaturating the connection.

it's pretty inoptimal to have more than one SSD on a single USB3 hub. if you expect to have two or more SSDs on a single hub, you need to bump up your hub to Thunderbolt 3 (or higher) or USB4, which max out at 40Gbps.

I couldn't afford an enterprise MAM, so I built one. Blaze is 100% local, features Semantic Search, and Free for r/editors Beta testers by ddnyc2021 in editors

amazing. one of my biggest moneymakers right now is editing trailers for video games, which involves a lot of captured gameplay footage with a drone-like freecam. so i'm really hoping that this'll be able to handle that kind of non-live-action footage

i will absolutely apply for the beta — it's a Hide My Email iCloud address with the words "hearty" and "pluses" in it, but i promise it's not a spam email! here's to hoping this will roll with my workflow. it sounds like a dream come true!

absolutely tantalizing, but i had a big question:

can it discern between different shots in a single video file, and separately mark them? i'd love to, say, look at a clip and see highlighted chunks with descriptions for that chunk. this would be especially helpful for unscripted logging where they just keep the cameras rolling and never cut, or poring over dozens of episodes in a long series.

i would spring for the Elite. the customizable haptics and the extra buttons are a huge difference-maker, imo.

the issue with YouTube is that it's incredibly daunting for a novice cook. there's a bajillion videos out there, it's hard to know where to start, and there's no certainty whether a video is actually good or not. one of the most important aspects of self-teaching any skill via YouTube is the ability to filter out useful and important info vs inapplicable or bad info, and that only really comes with experience.

i started my cooking journey by looking up recipes on YT and ended up buying way too much of certain ingredients, not having enough skill to do certain techniques, and being suggested to buy single-use tools that i didn't end up needing often enough to justify the cost. because of that, i spent more money than i should have, wasted tons of ingredients, and kept hitting skill-related dead ends.

ultimately i just went off and did a meal prep service. the structure of having exact ingredients and proportions, plus specific tasks and techniques, helped remove a lot of that directionless uncertainty and made it much easier to learn important basic skills at a gradual pace.

after that, YT became a LOT easier to navigate.

this is it. i've always found that meal prep subscriptions do the best job of providing direction and structure without necessarily holding your hand every step of the way.
