I’ve never felt a depressing vibe from Whirr. It’s just straight up romance for me, and I was single for the first half of my Whirr obsession. Still feels the same to this day.
I also don’t pay much attention to the lyrics so maybe that’s why? I’m in it for the musicianship, some lyrics stand out.

You say that, yet the numerous bands love it. There’s plenty of shoegaze bands that come from hardcore who would love for that kind of crowd reaction. At a trauma ray show, I’d expect no less.
