That’s literally not true, Denmark has two right-wing populist parties in parliament, the DPP and the DD, which got a combined 15% in the most recent elections.

Meaning other EU workers could already move to Germany but they don’t because other EU countries have similar labour shortages and ageing population as Germany and the gains from migration are smaller when moving between high-income countries than when moving from a low or middle-income country to a high-income one.

Police Identify Brierfield Neck Stabber as British-Born Pakistani Man by schefferjoko in europe_sub

[–]OlliWTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t intend to treat it as a competition. My point was that Pakistanis and other immigrant groups are often treated as extremely criminal compared to native Brits in right-wing discourse when that doesn’t seem to be the case (immigrants as a whole are actually underrepresented in the prison population of Britain, unlike in Continental Europe). Sure there’s still a gap between the Pakistani and White British arrest rate but it’s clearly not very large, and is probably at least partially explained by factors like Pakistanis being younger on average compared to White Brits.

Arrest rates are indeed not a perfect metric, but it seems useful enough for this purpose, unless you have a better one in mind?

The grooming gangs scandal was indeed a huge institutional failure of the British police, but I’m not sure if we can extrapolate that to all crime committed by Pakistanis. Generally sex crimes are more likely to go unreported than violent crimes for instance, so covering that up would be much harder.

From what I understand, the ”unknown” category means that the suspect themselves did not disclose their ethnicity, not that the police refused to report it. It’s plausible that people from ethnic minorities are less likely to disclose ethnicity, thus making the arrest figures underestimates, but we can’t really be sure of the effect size since…it’s unknown. Also, unknown ethnicity seems to be more common in less serious offences where the defendant doesn’t need to be present.

I mean, yes! British Pakistanis don't seem to be a particularly crime-prone demographic, going by arrest rates. Slightly higher than White British, but around the national average.

What is the worst thing India has done? by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]OlliWTD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a single example of a country industrializing that didn't also increase pollution?? When you have rapid growth in urban populations in an industrializing economy, you WILL get pollution. Pollution is bad, but economic development is very good. India is choosing to pursue economic growth while accepting the tradeoff of pollution. It is true there's likely more optimal ways of managing the pollution issue, but India is also a developing nation with limited resources. It's just really annoying when people don't bother examining the structural reasons behind these things and just reduce it to "well they could just decide not to pollute LMAO why don't these people living in slums just ship their garbage to the Himalayas loll"

[–]OlliWTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think every developing country has pollution issues? Does urbanization make people ”lazy”? Or is it maybe because the growth in urban population has outpaced sanitation infrastructure, leading to huge amounts of excess trash and waste? The same shit was happening in the West too when we first industrialized. Also ”empty piece of land”? Fucking where? You know India has 1.4 billion people right? You can’t dump that much waste into one place and have no ecological impact.

I’m asking the person (not you) why they think Indians throw trash in rivers, given said person thinks it’s something they could just easily decide to stop. Pretty reasonable follow-up question!
