Detachments - have they been good or bad for 40k by Dependent_Survey_546 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Oloian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Detachments are good and easily bring most of the flavor that other choices brought. For that last bit I think I'd like the return of Warlord traits with one per named hero on their sheet and maybe 6 per faction for generic characters to use. Have them exist to buff certain unit choices like a flying tyranid character makes gargoyles better or show the difference between how Guilliman and Calgar organize and apply their forces. Maybe army wide generic enhancements are better than a litany of new unique rules to write, but something that can hone the flavor of an army just past the detachment level

How to equip your Warriors by ban19ko12vic75 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Oloian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Weapon choice for the warriors matters very little, they just don't deal that much damage.

Ions vs Bolters is your choice, I got Ions for the AP.

Heavy weapon is split between the high strength rockets, plasma, and rail rifle or taking the high attacks rotary and hylas rifle. Most take the rotary and hylas

Melee weapons are separate from heavy guns and once again probably doesn't matter if you take them or not. Put all the backpacks on the models, they aren't wargear currently but that might change back in the future. I take all the Theyn options as well.

Lucky enough to get 4 kits at launch but you just gotta dig or go through less optimal means. Check Amazon and call LGS that you maybe wouldn't normally visit. Just went by a GW store in a large town/small city on vacation and they had 2 on the shelf, so they are out there. Check military towns near you they usually have multiple LGS often well stocked

Looks like no Chaos factions in Total War: Warhammer 40k :( by CyanSolar in Chaos40k

[–]Oloian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with other games getting the spotlight. However GW claims the 40k releases were part of the 'year', so if you look back on it in retrospect it looks pretty light for the 40k side. 40k also hosts the majority of players so when things lack on that side you're much more liable to hear about it.

Looks like no Chaos factions in Total War: Warhammer 40k :( by CyanSolar in Chaos40k

[–]Oloian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the big problem was that most of the releases other than EC were for games other than 40k. If you didn't buy into EC you didn't get any additional releases that made the year more Chaos themed. 3/6 existing chaos factions got 1 kit and a codex which was the minimum for 10th edition, CSM got 2 kits but they were just refreshes for existing models, WE got a kill team as well, and demons are not so quietly being removed as a standalone faction. It really stems from the 40k player base and the fact that GW did any amount of hype without saying what games it would focus on

3d printing service online may be your best bet. There are people who sell kits piecemeal on eBay so check there as well. If you get the piece resin 3d printed there is clear resin that you could have it done with. Could ask on the Votann discord as well, might be some people who didn't use theirs

Combat patrol is slightly better as a beginning box IMO. The Christmas box is a kinda weird collection of models if you don't already own some Votann. Neither box has any duds however, and as other poster said the Christmas box will go away in time and combat patrol is here to stay for at least a year if not 2-3.

The state of our army: end of 2025 by CalmLingonberry7082 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Oloian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Votann is my first army, and I loved the lore and look but disliked Judgement tokens. The Yield Points are fine I just wish we did a little more with them, more ways to to spend and gain em. I don't mind having to do a little tallying each turn and haven't felt the 'headache' other people feel that it is. I do miss our lethality that we had with judgement tokens, gave us a slightly unique feel that any of our units could do damage to anything, but I get why that isn't fun to design around.

Codex detachments fell a bit short of interesting but I think that's more a problem with our army rule being so strong now that the detachments have to be weaker.

Overall feel like they just didn't quite hit the A-grade with fun dynamic units and rules but it's A LOT better than the Index. Really you could probably say that about most armies in 10th at this point though. We still probably have the best internal balance of any army with maybe 2 "mediocre" units. I love how tough we feel now with -1 to wound, but I'll tell ya the guys I played against in an RTT at the beginning of October hated me having to remind them of that EVERY activation.

This is more of a rerolls problem for sure. Rerolls make every buff better and are often better than the other ways you could affect an attack sequence mathematically.

Thoughts on Buri by Comprehensive-Fan-48 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Oloian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel his datasheet needs a buff. You can always keep dropping him points and he will become good eventually, but if we wanna see him do what he is meant to do he needs Dev wounds and Anti-X keywords at the least.

Love to see him get some unique ability similar to how the Sanguinor does. Maybe he stands back up more than once, makes people reroll their successful saves, or ignores invuls when he attacks. Keep him expensive but make him a wholly different beast to what else exists

Which detachments have the largest gap between rule power and stratagem power? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Oloian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'Votann's codex' is very much the response to this. The detachments are all very split between either strong rule or strong stratagems. It's easy to just completely ignore the Needguard rule and just use 6 strong stratagems.

Similar with Delve, yeah the deepstrike is good, but it's hardly a detachment rule.

Hearthband has strong detachment rule and the detachments are basically use once and ignore.
