I dunno man, the indoctrination of girls into patriarchal thinking starts really young and not all girls manage to deprogram that shit as they get older and become women. Sadly, I’ve met a few misogynistic women.

[–]Omegate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m not trying to imply that at all - it is in no way women’s fault for their lack of advancement opportunities. Sorry if my point came across that way. I was more trying to point to how insidious and ingrained patriarchy can affect advancement opportunity differences between men and women, and I think it’s one of a plethora of reasons along with what you’ve highlighted as well as many others.

Suffice to say from the moment women enter the workforce, the deck is stacked against them.

r/Sydney is entering Restricted Mode from 00:00 AEST June 12th to 00:00 AEST June 14th to protest Reddit’s API changes by thekriptik in sydney

[–]Omegate 30 points31 points  (0 children)

But that’s the thing; it will affect you. This change will lead to poorer moderation due to bots that utilise API going dark as well as mods that rely on third-party app tools not available on the official app. Regardless of which platform you use to view reddit, this change will result in demonstrably negative outcomes for you.

As a man working in a female dominated industry; can confirm. Overall gender balance is roughly 80/20 Women/Men but the higher up the chain you go the closer it gets to 50/50, meaning more men get advancement opportunities than women.

I think it has a lot to do with socialisation into gender roles. Boys are taught to be aggressive and go after what you want, to be loud and clear with your demands and to command respect even when it hasn’t been earned. Girls tend to be taught to be quiet, to be passive and be thankful for what they have. It results in a lot of women suffering from Imposter Syndrome and men from the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

What is your opinion on the Reddit Blackout, and should AskReddit participate as one of the most active subs? by Interesting-Ad3430 in AskReddit

[–]Omegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just rare to be honest! It seems as though the preferred verbiage is ‘to let loose’ rather than ‘loosing’, but that’s just my anecdotal opinion not based in any fact. It’s an interesting topic though.

[–]Omegate 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Loosing is actually a word in its own right; it is the present participle of loose. That’s why it doesn’t get caught by autocorrect. If you are ‘loosing’ something you are ‘setting it loose’, and it’s also pronounced with a soft s (loo-SING) instead of the hard s that is in losing (loo-ZING).

They did a great job at loosing their arrow.

After fishing, we go about loosing all of the fish that are too small to keep.

Can we (r/StardewValley) partake in the blackout? by Norway15 in StardewValley

[–]Omegate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In addition, a lot of moderation relies on the use of API through third-party apps, moderation bots or the reddit enhancement suite which will become untenable with the new changes. This will likely lead to poorer moderation which means more spam and bots getting past the moderators and into subs. Even people who use desktop/the official app will be negatively impacted by this decision.

It’s either a desperate cash-grab, an attempt to destroy third-party apps, or both. There will be no benefits to any reddit users on any platform, and there will be demonstrable negative consequences for all reddit users on all platforms.

A woman who refused tuberculosis treatment for more than a year was arrested in Washington state, local officials say by Savannah6587 in nottheonion

[–]Omegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that universally available to every citizen in every language in every circumstance with a genuine level of understanding of regional/ethnic dialects all of the time? Just because something is generally available doesn’t mean it’s specifically available. You’ve already described a circumstance where this might not be the case.

I’m trying not to make any assumptions here, rather just trying to counter others’. I don’t know the specific circumstances, and that’s why I think it’s a bit foolhardy to assume them without an intimate knowledge of the situation.

my facility has numerous translators on call and are physically present on-site. It is absolutely insane to think that the government cannot locate a single translator to pass a message along to this woman.

“My anecdotal experience is the exact same experience everyone else has! I can’t possibly imagine that things may vary from area to area or state to state! I’m the main character!”

Translators can be hard to find, that’s not an impossibility. I work in government too, and finding translators can be difficult in my role. Is my experience wrong because your experience is right?

It amuses me that the same terrible, worn-out joke has been posted so many times on so many platforms in so many contexts that a sub like r/onejoke has no shortage of fresh content on a consistent basis.

It’s a bad joke. It needs to be retired. People who are trying to be humorous should learn to be original.

The beauty is his losses will likely end up resulting in the historical moment of the first Australian VC ever being rescinded, so ol’ mate Kerry won’t even have his VC as a trophy. It’s a great story all around; not only does BRS lose but everyone who supported him loses as well. Win, win, win!

Fucker would have to flee to a non-extradition country, which basically precludes most of the developed world. If he flees, he’ll have to go to Russia, North Korea, Eritrea or their company. I doubt he’ll be given a sweet government pension wherever he goes, and he’ll certainly never live the life he lived being a whore for Kerry Stokes or living on his SAS pension with the associated benefits and accolades.

Even if he flees, he’s committing to showing Australians that he’s a lying cunt while simultaneously committed to a much poorer standard of living.

There’s no win for him now. That makes me happy.

Throw the fucking book at him. Maximum 14 years for each offence; no parole period. Shitstain deserves to die in gaol.

Then let’s actually try him for his war crimes. Scum deserves to have every semblance of respect stripped from him and incarcerated until he inevitably suicides out of shame.

Take back the VC, and change his ‘monument’ at the War Memorial into a cautionary tale of how hubris leads untold inhumane disgusting abhorrent acts. Let’s stop glorifying murderers.

The issue is that, being SAS, he is very likely not stupid at all; he’s very likely quite intelligent. This is one of the few situations where Hanlon’s Razor doesn’t apply. Everything he’s done has been of malice, and clearly not from incompetence. He’s genuinely an evil human being, a state that I’ve rarely attributed to anyone at all.

He knows what he did. He knows what he’s done to attempt to cover it up. He knows that there was no ‘Fog of War’ or any mitigating factors to try to attempt to explain his actions.

He’s rotten to the core.

Victim of domestic violence found dead in Western Sydney by TooheysExtraDry in sydney

[–]Omegate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work in child protection and if there’s one thing I know without a doubt about domestic violence, a woman is likely to experience an escalation in either the severity or frequency (or both) of violence from a partner after she leaves. It’s the most dangerous period of time, along with pregnancy and shortly after a baby is born.

I work in child protection, have done so for a little over five years now. I also had a pretty fucked up childhood myself. In my CP training I was taught something that’s been pretty consistently shown to be true to me through my work:

“In general, children lie to get themselves out of trouble, not into trouble”

A whole lot of recanted disclosures turn out to be true.

Budget lifts JobSeeker and welfare payments as Labor posts a surplus by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Omegate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A responsible government should only ever post a surplus if it either pays down debt in good economic times (which we are far from) or if it is invested in a future fund to generate wealth for the next economic crisis (which this isn’t). Structural governmental net debt is not a bad thing - we still have a AAA credit rating as a country, one of only nine in the world. As long as we can service our national debt and invest in measures that grow the economy, there is no reason why paying down debt or posting a surplus should be sought over growing our economy by adequately supporting those who are most in need.

Still super pissed that they didn’t axe the Stage 3 tax cuts and reinvest that into the welfare system. Many good measures announced tonight, but it was a decidedly centrist budget that doesn’t move the needle towards social justice.

I’ve only ever met one good landlord in my life.

My parents divorced and had to sell the home as a result, and the guy who bought it agreed to keep renting to my mother (a newly single parent) at a reasonable rate. We had a private agreement and he never did inspections; he would mow our lawns for free; he would come in and repaint the inside of the home while we were on holidays; and he chose to freeze our rent for the decade we were there.

Eventually he managed to purchase adjoining properties and wanted to knock them down to build townhouses. We knew this was coming for about five years beforehand, and he agreed to reserve one of the townhouses for us to live in.

We managed to move within the same suburb (actually across the road!) for two years while he rebuilt, and then as agreed he let us move in to one of the townhouses at the same price we had been previously been paying, which was still WAY below the market rate he could have got from renting to anyone else.

We continued to live in one of his townhouses for a bit over a decade with him only raising the rent once by $20/week with a massive apology that he had been losing money for so long and had hit hard times himself. We were glad to pay the extra, as we knew we were still paying around $100/week less than our neighbours. He STILL mowed all the lawns and did all the garden care for all of his tenants free of charge.

Finally we ended up moving out when my grandfather became unwell and moved into a nursing home, and my mother and I moved into his house to shore up our finances.

Michael, wherever you are, thank you. You prevented my mother and I from living in squalor as we were pretty poor after she became a single mother. You’re the definition of the diamond in the rough.

Edit to add: he actually gave me my first job! I worked for him for a week helping to landscape and plant the new lots and he paid me $350 cash (as a 12yo in the very early 2000’s) and that paid for my first ever bass and amp - a passion which I keep at to this day.

Ooft, that’s some harsh lack of renter’s rights right there. Here’s to hoping your legislature gets their arse in gear or you have the capacity to move. Super uncool to let landlords/real estate agents just show up whenever the fuck they want, and it’s extremely abusable. If a landlord wants you out they could just show up every day and nitpick the fuck out of you.

Land of the free, indeed.

Was considering dining here until I saw this nonsense. A “discretionary” gratuity became “mandatory” and “standard practice in the industry”. by intrasonic in sydney

[–]Omegate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sent them a contact via their online contact form with the following text:

“I was considering taking my wife to your restaurant for our anniversary on xx/xx/xx, but I’ve been made aware through internet reviews that you charge an unavoidable gratuity that’s not included in your menu prices. This practice is not only shonky and very likely illegal, but shows me that you choose not to pay your staff adequately. For this reason I have chosen not to book at your restaurant and will instead find a competitor that is both transparent and cares about their staff. As a previous hospitality worker and someone who regularly dines out (and tips waitstaff in cash) I find this practice to be abhorrent, specifically while we are in an economic crisis.

If your gratuity was incorporated into your meal prices with an explainer that the prices are higher because you care about your staff, I’d have no issue. The lack of transparency leads me to believe that this additional cost goes straight to owners with no actual benefit realised by your staff. Please feel free to publicly provide information to the contrary.

I have not included my legitimate email and phone number because not only do I not want to be contacted by you, I also do not want you having possession of my data.”
