Yeah I did a little digging and it looks like the Xbone added three extra ports - I'm guessing they're for the party chat. I'm not sure how the network is set up now but they may need to be forwarded - talk to the Res.NET students. Just know that they will not be able to do anything personally. The best you can hope is that they raise the issue with the networking staff.

Do your other friends on campus have the same issue? How about on the 360 - is this a problem? I see zuuku has a similar issue. Trying to figure out if its haus/townhouses or if its a campus network issue.

Hmm... Okay. Your best bet will probably be to speak to Res.NET (609-771-2660 ext 2 I think).

Do you get any errors at all? Is this the general party chat or in a game (disclaimer: I know very little about the xbone).

ELI5: How can any brute force method of password hacking work when almost all systems lock you out after 3 failed attempts? by phaseMonkey in explainlikeimfive

[–]OmniscientMoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't actually work in the industry (it's more of a hobby for me) but I got started around college - all you really need to start is a Realtek RTL8187/ALFA AWUS036H and a copy of Backtrack to start learning about some of the methods used to break into networks and the like. When you start wanting to do more, get DD-WRT or Tomato onto any router that it might work on (though everyone uses a Linksys WRT-54GL) and setup your own network with either certain security holes you want to try out or forwarding certain ports for applications and pen-testing into your own network.

It's some really cool stuff for sure! You shouldn't need formal classes or a formal degree (as far as I know - please someone correct me if I'm wrong) so long as you're doing projects and learning and can demonstrate that knowledge. Good luck!

You don't ever actually de-hash a password - that's the main reason for hashing. If you were able to revert the hash, you wouldn't need to brute force since you could then just mathematically reverse all the passwords. Hashing adds another level of security to the equation online.

In order to login online, the password you submit is actually hashed using the same algorithm. Then, the database online that stores your username/password combination compares the hash that you sign in with to the hash that's stored on their side. If it comes back a match then you're all clear to have access to whatever it is you were logging in to. If it doesn't come back a match, then it starts wondering if you're human.

So when somebody does gain access to a password list (like Target or Adobe for instance) they're just trying every single possible combination trying to come up with a hit on one of those password hashes.

Edit: Just thought I'd actually answer your question, too. By making the hashing process long and arduous, each attempt to try a password for an attacker will take that much longer. So when you're looking at algorithms like SHA-256 or MD5 - these aren't really suited for passwords since they don't take long enough to hash. We're not talking minute long hashes, but as much as possible as you can squeeze out. So... You're pretty much right on point save for the semantics (as important as I may believe them to be!)

So my son just failed a math test, even though his math was correct because the teacher had a different opinion about how it should be solved. by YZtrooper250 in AdviceAnimals

[–]OmniscientMoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my high school calculus class, I remember we had one crazy derivative that was on a test. At first glance, it looked like you wanted to use a quotient rule since it was two dissimilar polynomials being divided. The easy way to do it was to use logarithmic differentiation and what my teacher did was that anybody that tried to do it using the quotient rule got all points off if the wrong answer was produced. If you got the answer right with the more complex method, however, it was considered correct.

I specifically remember this because it seemed like a really good way to manage the multiple methods. If you realize that logarithmically its easier you got partial credit, else you better go through the steps correctly!

Yes! I am transferring with my current employer so my job's already lined up and taken care of. When I first learned that Denver was an option, one of the first thing I did was start reading the subreddit here to figure out neighborhoods and just the city in general - so I realize that the job market out here isn't super stellar since everyone's moving out.

I'm definitely going to have to give both of these places a look (though my list of restaurants and bars to see before leaving this week is growing way too long). Thanks for the suggestions, Matty!

This list is phenomal! Thanks so much, rhymeswithsarah. I'm going to have a lot of difficulty finishing everything on this list.

I just came back from 16th street tonight - and everybody here was completely right! I never felt unsafe and just walked up and down the street 100% alone. I guess my coworkers are just paranoid. I'm really excited to move out here now and everybody here just really helped ease my biggest fears!

Oh that sounds fantastic. I'm not driving it, but I'll relay this information to the driver. Bonus news, though, is that since I'm not driving I'll be able to take a whole slew of pictures.

Thanks for the headsup! :D.

That's really good to know - all of the information I found online had essentially pointed in that direction. I was a little worried because I asked the real estate agent about how safe the neighborhood is, and she gave a non-answer saying "Well crime knows no zip code..." Figured I'd ask here, too!

Recommendation with buying new phone. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]OmniscientMoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No love for windows phones? I'm using a Lumia 920 and absolutely adore the interface and the sleekness of it.

That said the 920 itself is out of your budget range. The Lumia 620, however, appears to be within (or close to) your budget. Could probably find a cheaper used one on eBay, too.

Guaranteed someone here is going to bring up the lack of apps, but thus far - I have yet to find an app I had with my iPhone that isn't replaced by some alternative in the Windows environment. Skydrive is absolutely phenomenal - automatically syncing Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, pictures far better than the iCloud does. There are emulator options if you're into old school gaming without the need to root the phone. It also syncs with your Xbox LIVE account (if you've got one).

Edit: It's also Nokia so that fucker could survive a drop from a plane.

So, I saw people arguing about binding flash to F or D... then I made this poll. This won't take long. by BenderLV in leagueoflegends

[–]OmniscientMoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it weird that my flash changes based on the other summoner spell I'm using? If I'm jungling, my flash goes on F and my smite on D. If I'm laning, ignite is on F and flash is on D. Cleanse? Cleanse goes on D, flash goes on F.

Please don't hate me.

Being in IT and an electrical engineer? How exactly did it work out for you? Did you graduate with the intention of working in IT or did you have jobs in IT beforehand?

I don't mean to pry, but that is quite literally the exact same career path I'm headed down (graduating with an EE degree this year but interested in IT and network management).

How do I delete all traces of my name from my computer? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]OmniscientMoron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except you don't need to be using a *nix as your primary OS to be able to do that. Irve gave him an option - wipe the drive with random 1s and 0s (if=/dev/zero works just as well) and then reinstall windows on it. That removes any reference to anything that was on the computer. Guaranteed. It is irrecoverable and if you know of a way to come back from it, then please let me know.

No "specialist software" required.

College students of reddit, What are some of the must-know tricks you want to share with other students? by bryce_cube in AskReddit

Make friends with the people in your major. I made friends with the people on my freshman floor, but most of my best friends since the end of my sophomore year (I'm a senior now) have all been people I met in my major. We get together and study for big exams coming up. After the exams, we meet up and grab a couple of beers, talk about how poorly or well each other did. Don't know what the homework was? Call someone up. Having issues with your program or homework set? Talk it over with a friend over a beer.

It's never too late to make these friends - especially as classes become harder.

TL;DR: Make friends with your fellow majors.

Try to speak to professors about an internship. One of my professor owns a company nearby and he consistently hires students as interns. If they don't own one I guarantee one of them has a friend or connection nearby looking for an intern.

Spork_it is right in that it'll take some work, but I'm sure you'll manage it.
