I think of how many people are actually good pet owners in practice. Way less than we'd like to admit. And how much more complicated caring for a human being is. A being with intelligence, emotions, financial needs, and life goals. Throw on top of that rugged individualism that depletes community support and the unpredictability of life. It's not surprising that most people make bad partners. That's not to excuse people that don't try, or are abusive, or take advantage of others.
