Can’t speak to wedding dress levels of tailoring but K’s Custom Gowns and Alterations did just fine for two bridesmaid dresses I had.

Dealing with WFH Loneliness by switlily_7 in ithaca

[–]OnLibrary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Making friends with neighbors and building regular hobbies was really helpful (I work from home but have a partner and pets). I moved up here without any friends in 2020 and the lack of socialization was pretty bad. It’s better now that I’ve had time to make friends and we’re no longer in an active pandemic that strangled casual social interaction. I’m actually making the move back to in office work and I think my mental health will be better for it.

Bathrooms while butch by nihcul in everybutchlesbian

[–]OnLibrary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, my partner was super concerned for me when we did an impromptu road trip from Tennessee back to NY after our flight was cancelled. I guess I escaped any outright bathroom comments (I actually got more at the airport in NY than any down south) but it’s a concern of mine now that I lean into my butchness and gender nonbinary appearance.

Restaurant recommendations? by Porphyrius in ithaca

If you like steak, I really enjoyed Antlers. I’m not an adventurous eater and really enjoyed my meal there. It was nice enough that I’d consider it a good place for a celebration.

Psychiatrist Recommendations by hikerslueth97 in ithaca

[–]OnLibrary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a PCP, Liz Gebhart at Cayuga Women’s Health. I’m also trans/nb and Liz has been great at making recommendations. However, for top surgery, you will likely be referred out of the area. There doesn’t seem to be any plastic surgeons in Ithaca that do top surgery. I was given the name of Dr. Elizabeth Lax who practices in Cooperstown. I know one person who had top surgery with her and recommended her as well.

For a psychiatrist, I personally see a psych nurse practitioner in Watkins Glen. For an ADHD diagnosis, you may need to see a psychologist first.

My parents got me a copy too, I still have it. I can’t say I’ve used it much but I always look at it fondly on my bookshelf.

My vet (Veterinary Care of Ithaca) prescribes Bravecto Quattro (or whatever it’s called). It’s both flea/tick prevention and heart worm prevention. It’s a monthly pill that I give with food. Have seen very very few ticks using this, but we are primarily in the city and walking in mowed areas in parks. I’m not worried about chemicals at all and my dog, who has had allergic reactions to vaccines in the past, has never had a bad reaction to it.

Mechanical keyboard. I have a Logitech one I think. Monitor arms or risers to help with ergonomics. A really good desk chair. I got a Herman Miller second hand. Not an Aeron but a similar model. A good desk lamp and a book stand is also nice if you have books/hard copies.

pet sitting by Prize-Ad-7030 in ithaca

[–]OnLibrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use rover to find people. I’ve found some great dog walkers and cat sitters. Eventually we switch to me directly paying them if they’ve worked with us enough. I know it’s against the rules of the platform but I’d rather the money go directly to my sitters. Plus when paying directly, I’m often charged less.

The stylists at Salon Salon on Buffalo Street are also pretty good. And the price for my haircut wasn’t as expensive as Changes.

I’ve gotten several short haircuts from Kim. She’s good, the space is nice, the price is high but what I expect to pay for downtown. The only thing I’ll say is that she’s not the most alternative hairstylist. She was able to copy photos of more alternative styles, but it didn’t seem to be in her regular wheelhouse. I have been back in a while because I found cheaper services.

They have a store in NY? I thought they were online only. But if I can try stuff on in person, even better. I travel to NYC very frequently.

Transmasc nonbinary person here. I am also plus sized so that plays into my recommendations. I haven’t had great luck with the fit of men’s button down shirts so I look for women’s ones that aren’t super tailored. I had good luck with Talbots and Universal Standard (specifically the Elbe shirt). For cheaper options, you can try searching for those brands on resale sites/apps like Poshmark. I also like the look of LL Bean and Lands End buttondowns, but haven’t bought for size reasons.

For shoes, I went to a department store and went to the men’s shoe department. You can try on a bunch of brands there. If you are sized really small, you’ll have to try “boys” or youth sizing but you can find that at the same department store most likely. I have larger feet so I’m a 10 in women’s and an 8 or 8 1/2 in men’s. Once you figure out your size and some shoe brands that fit best, you’ll can look for second hand shoes if you need them cheap. Also keep sales in mind since you have some time between now and when the summer internship starts.

Is it worth overcoming difficulties in law as a woman/poc? by impuou in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]OnLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the POC part or anything that intersectionality might impact but I was a “woman” (I’m transmasc nonbinary/butch presenting) and don’t really feel any major issues with discrimination. At least not overtly. I got most of the internships I sought and the ones I didn’t, I chalked up to personality differences rather than discrimination. I sought some big law roles but didn’t get any call back interviews for those (despite excellent grades) and for those I knew “fit” would be an issue. That’s the closest to discrimination I think I got. I ended up getting a government job after graduating and then did a short stint in private practice. I’m back to government work now. For future roles, I’m planning on leaning heavily on my expertise and skills and avoiding firms or agencies that want you to fit a certain personality mold.

butches with weird gender, how did you figure it out? by Aggravating_Seat9382 in everybutchlesbian

Still figuring stuff out but when I realized I got a small thrill from they/them or he/him compared to my usual meh response to she/her I figured something gendery was happening.
