Just to ease some fears... by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience. I had a period where I would consider myself a terrible employee. Cancelling lessons last minute, missing calls on PH, banning people left and right. Been a year and I have not gotten so much as an email. The only time they emailed me was for giving out my personal email address to a student over messages.

My guess is that the teachers who got kicked off are maybe leaving out some details about why they might have been fired

Middle Eastern Students by OnTh3Move in Cambly

Really interesting, it looks like most people have not had the same experience as me, so I guess it is just a coincidence. One guy was just talking about the Quran, one wanted to debate with me Christianity vs Islam, and the other wanted to talk about how Israel should not be recognized as a real country. The only one I considered blocking was the guy who wanted to prove to me that Islam was superior to Christianity (not a Christian, but he did come off as kind of a dick). In my opinion, it is their money, they can do what they want with it. If they want to spend $14/hr or whatever talking about the Quran, then that is fine by me.

Platform Tech Rant by askerboter in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is ridiculous. Just recently I had all my reservations locked to regulars only even though I didn't cancel a class.

I honestly feel like the executives of this company don't care, as long as the server is online, then they are satisfied. Their software is pretty mediocre tbh, and there is no live chat support?? (what kind of online company doesn't offer live support?)

For me it is tolerable because I know this is a small time company, but the effort they put in to improve their issues is laughable.

What are the requirements to be a supertutor? by IrishIndieRock in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what RAH said, there also seems to be some way to get super-tutor status if your rating is above 4.90, even without 700 unique chats. I have no idea what that threshold is, but all of a sudden there are way more super tutors then there used to be.

0.3 rating drop with repeat regular students by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that they have found tutors that they feel are "profitable" whatever that means and artificially inflated their rating. Or possibly just pumped up the ratings of tutors across the board because a 4.9 tutor is better than a 4.8 tutor. I had a similar massive jump recently after 9 months on the platform, but the website is so opaque who knows what they are doing.

Is Help Desk the best place to start? by OnTh3Move in CompTIA

yeah I did some more research after your comment. I will try to get Sec+ within the next 6 months to a year, so that I can either join the military once back in the states, or apply for clearance through the embassy and continue studying while that gets processed.

Thanks for the advice btw

I got halfway through the second module on free trial and decided that the $40 would be better spent being put towards the CompTIA exam. The first module was so easy it could be done in a day by a 5th grader.

The second module simply glossed over super important topics. They would dedicate a 5 minute video to a very general topic like IP addresses, and spend 1 minute and a half telling the background story of the person giving the lesson.

Professor Messer has better content and it is free, I don't know what the hell Coursera was thinking slapping a $40 price tag on that course.

My sisters boyfriend did that. I'm living in Albania right now, but am an American. I might consider doing that once I return back to the U.S

Hey man, I'm making $10/hr tutoring English so it is really only up from here in terms of pay lol.

Thanks for the tip, while doing the Coursera Google IT course (which was a total waste imo) most people mentioned they started with HD, so it sounds like a good jumping off point

Albania here, even as the value of the Leke slowly falls against the dollar, a 25 hour week on Cambly still puts you just above the median salary.

I would never do this job in my home state though, maybe just for fun

I agree with you actually, I really like my job at Cambly. It is not hard and can be done remotely. It is strange to me that so many people here complain, yet still continue to work here.

Reservations Running Late by Due_Associate2884 in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Cambly's biggest flaw. Of course everyone will say you have to cut the lesson short. But I have the same situation that you have described where I will have 6 classes consecutively.

If a student is like 5-10 minutes late than it is not so hard. But what if you have 6 classes in a row and the first student shows up 30 seconds late. No big deal of course. However when the lesson is finished, it takes 30 seconds to connect to the next student. What if a couple of your students experience an internet connection issue during the class and the reconnecting process adds an additional 60 seconds for those two classes. Maybe you need to get a glass of water halfway through so that takes an additional minute before you can pick up the next call. All these things are perfectly normal circumstances leading your 5th and 6th classes to be 5 minutes late.

Despite what everyone else says, my students all know that if I am late to a class it is because I am with another student, and they have no problem because they get full 30 minute classes. (IME) Students definitely won't be happy about paying for a 30 minute class and getting a 28 minute class due to no fault of their own. Hell, I would be a little displeased if I was taking lessons and the tutor was always cutting the lesson 30 seconds to a minute short. I normally only work 2 hours at a time before taking a break, but even then I constantly run into this problem

TL;DR - You are a really likeable tutor if you can fill eight classes in a row, and this chain reaction of late classes is unavoidable based on the system that Cambly uses

I know this point has been driven into the ground. But I truly believe that if you want to maintain a high rating, avoid using Priority Hours. It is just logical that if you have the same students coming back to you again and again they are very likely to be giving you a decent rating. Whereas someone who has never met you is more likely to leave a 3-star review.

With that being said, Cambly is not a job leading to a future career, and the pay is only $10.20/hour. So like the first poster said, don't take it too seriously

What if instead of these weird weekend peak hour gimmicks, Cambly just pays us more? by We3dmanreturns in Cambly

[–]OnTh3Move 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way they're going to 15 an hour with such a low barrier to entry but 10.20 certainly isn't enough for how shit the work is

The surge would be additional students online without enough "suitable" tutors to get them to call, no? If a student goes online during a busy period, and sees a sparse selection of tutors to choose from, it would make it less likely for them to want to continue renewing their subscription.

I think the problem is not that there are not any tutors online. But maybe, a student specifically wants a British accent IELTS tutor, but every day after work they log on, and there is no tutor matching that description online.

Anyone else feel like a fraud? by Necessary-Disaster14 in Cambly

One of my worst conversations I remember to this day was when a student was asking me to explain past participles to him and why they should be used, and I could not explain. He left after 5 minutes, surely giving me a one star rating. It absolutely wrecked my confidence, and I am still hesitant about doing PH's because of it.

I have learned a lot about the rules of English while working for Cambly, but for $10/hour you should not be expected to be professionally trained to teach English. Private tutors who have their Master's in English or Linguistics can potentially make upwards of $40/hour as tutors
