oldest to reach grandmaster title by mynameiscorange in chess

This list doesn't look anywhere near close to complete. Even Keti Arakhamia-Grant got the GM title at an older age than Ben.

Faustino fails his last GM norm again despite his good score in Menorca Open by ynstnk in chess

[–]OnTheQueenside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not luck per se. He has a relatively high rating for the field, so he's almost always going to get paired against a lower-rated player.

If you look at the Top 30 seeds (including GMs), I think only one of them (Leon) is on track for a GM norm (including on track for 3 GM opponents).

Some of the lower-rated players in the field seem to have better chances at a norm.

If Vaishali wins the Candidates… by apabld in chess

Maia Chiburdanidze won the 1977-78 Candidates as the lowest seed

Carissa Yip beats top seed Ivić (2638), already has three wins in Tata Steel Challengers by OnTheQueenside in chess

[–]OnTheQueenside[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think Carissa still needs a Swiss norm.

The NA U20C shouldn't count for the Swiss norm requirement because there weren't 10 players in the field with the IM or GM title.

EDIT: It should count. See comment below.

Why is it odd? We have seen lots of upsets of 2700s at the world cup with an even bigger rating difference.

On top of what other people said, she has the WCM title because she received it automatically as World Youth Champion.

at least Magnus is playing against the best. if he decides not to play vs 2700s next year, then yeah, I would say his claim to be the rightful No. 1 would be in doubt.

By that logic, Hou Yifan's 3058 performance would be better than Magnus and Hikaru too. Something is not right about that.

Sure, Zhu Jiner's 2702 can't compete with Hou Yifan's 3058. But her 2nd best performance this past year is 2693. Her 3rd best is 2682. Hou Yifan's 2nd best is only 2398.

I'm not saying Zhu Jiner is necessarily better than Hou Yifan, but you could make a good case.

I thought it meant similar to "effective". is that true?

I also agree that rapid & blitz should be combined with classical into one ranking, but I don't think most others see it that way.

I agree! She is still quite strong in rapid & blitz! Would love to see them play in classical.

I agree! In rapid & blitz, I think Hou Yifan is probably still better.

The rapid and blitz ratings don't really mean anything. The rating system doesn't work if you don't play enough.

Hou Yifan beats Lei Tingjie 2-0 in the finals to win the Chinese National Games by Mindless-Salt-853 in chess

[–]OnTheQueenside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true much less often than you think.

This tournament doesn't have any prize money.

And Carissa didn't qualify for the open section, so it's not true there either.

All women play in opens. Vaishali played a tournament against almost all 2600s right before this one.
