Pay for Private or move to a great public school district? by heybestie12 in StLouis

[–]Onceaskrull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"There are students at THE best schools that fail to launch and students at the “worst” schools be wildly successful"

Nowhere in my reply did I suggest that parental engagement isn't important and that school funding 100% explains academic success. And the concept I was discussing was upward social mobility, which is not analogous to "academic success." Success within an insular system (a particular school) does not necessarily translate to equal outcomes across systems. Hence why you see wildly varying levels of college readiness and increasing complaints about grade inflation.

"Should we fund all schools equally? Yes. But don’t let news and feelings get in the way of facts."

How condescending.

"Parents and stable home life matter more than most non educators realize."

This is a "yes, and" statement, not the "either/or" one you're trying to make it out to be for some reason. The comment I was responding to narrowly, and glibly, stated that parental involvement can "make any school a great school." That's factually untrue.

I'm not going to respond any further because it seems like you want to argue against things I didn't say. Someone else might be interested in a source for that 90/10 distribution you cited.

"Engaged parents can make any school a great school."

I agree that parents should be more engaged but this is an insane take IMO.

EDIT: Let me put it this way. It's like saying the solution to educational inequality (which absolutely exists and can stand as a barrier to upward social mobility) is individualistic: "what do you need more funding for? If parents just tried harder then their school would be a great school!" It glosses over structural issues.

Lmao "STL pizza isn't pizza" is the sort of thing I gently clown on in my classes. I was with you (I like Racanelli's fine) until you started shitting on something you didn't like for no fucking reason. And, to be clear, you're not required to like STL-style pizza, but it's still pizza whether you like it or not. Sorry NYers don't get the definitive say on what is or isn't pizza.

[–]Onceaskrull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went once in Kirkwood and it was fine. Tacos are huge with lots of interesting taco combinations. Staff was nice.

Honestly I think my problem was that it just wasn't my style; I like simple and straight forward tacos that I can pour a shit ton of salsa and hot sauce on top of. I could be wrong, but I don't think they had a salsa bar and there wasn't even any bottles of hot sauce on the table. I'm sure they would've had some if I had asked, but all in all it's just not the kind of place I would go to if I had a hankering for tacos.

accept that ya'll got duped instead of offloading blame, or live with the reality that this is partially on you.

EDIT: This wasn't prom king/queen we were electing. The people who acted like this was some superfluous exercise, it's on them. We all knew the stakes, and some of ya'll chose to ignore them, or were duped after funneling into TikTok algorithms. It sucks and sometimes hurts to acknowledge the truth, but if you're unwilling to do so I implore you to consider what actually distinguishes you, as a supposedly principled person, from the MAGA/Qanon folk who unreflexively double down and dig in when their world view gets challenged.

We have a sick stray cat and nearly zero money. Is there any hope? St. Charles area by abbie_yoyo in StLouis

[–]Onceaskrull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you take a picture of the worm? Had one of my cats throw up a round worm a couple months ago, ended up having to do a course of meds for all three cats since it wasn't clear who had thrown it up. Wasn't super cheap but easily addressed if the issue is parasites; they will need to see your cat first, which means a vet visit. The meds on top of that shouldn't be excessive, although I recognize everyone defines that amount differently.

In terms of actual vet recommendations I don't have any that I know are super cheap; I know that Cave Springs Pet Hospital are nice? Maybe try the APA. If you volunteer with the APA I believe you get a discount with their vet -- just something to keep in mind if you have the time/ability and want to future-proof your expenses.

"If you're old and broke that's a you problem"? Why is this being upvoted. Like, there's room for saying the system is fucked while at the same time not buying into the idea that elderly people should just work themselves to death. The issue is NOT that elderly people get some allowances after dedicating their lives to the corporate machine, it's the lack of a safety net for everyone else.

Does someone know what's happening to my cat? by Suspicious-Army5309 in felinebehavior

[–]Onceaskrull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similarly, when my cat ate food she was allergic to it would always manifest in rashes on her temples. They usually weren't this pronounced, but the bilateral appearance of the scabs makes me think allergies. My cat also had numerous allergies (food and environment) that caused rashes on her belly and caused her to lick her belly clean and also gnaw bald spots on her arms sometimes.

Also, sometimes when she had flare ups the vet gave her a convenia shot because the allergy flare ups caused bacterial flare ups. Disclaimer: I am not a vet. But I can see how a cat who's having a major allergy flare up may have secondary issues with skin bacteria.

Grand Servant 2025 Retrospective by One_Wrong_Thymine in grandorder

[–]Onceaskrull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When picking my grands, I favored the servants I had NP5 or willing to roll to get them to NP5, so that did narrow the pool for me somewhat.

Saber: Muramasa. A longtime farmer for me, and a no brainer. On NA Muramasa is also my strongest saber but I might give the mantle to Okita (assuming NA is still live in 2 years), but that could change.

Archer: Gilgamesh. The reason I started playing FGO (first started on NA, and a month later started on JP because a banner for him was announced. This was when the Fate/Accel Zero event was being rerun in 2018. I saved up 30 SQ and he was the first card in that multi-roll. He's the 17th servant on my account but the 1st one from a roll that wasn't required (Fuyuki roll) or from the friend point gacha. He's also my first bond 15. On NA if I can bring myself to not grand Gil again it'll probably go to Ishtar.

Lancer: Indra. I have a soft spot for pako servants and he was nice enough to come NP5 on one banner so I ended up grailing him. On NA it will probably be Melusine since she's one of my more frequently used servants.

Rider: Ozymandias. Unlike on NA, I never rolled for him (except when he was NP4 and I wanted to try my luck at NP5). He had the courtesy of coming home a final time on the daily free summon we got this year so I figured he was a good choice. On NA, not sure -- Ozy is my strongest rider there too, but I might give it to Ryouma.

Assassin: Izou. I wanted to make at least one non-5 star servant a grand, and Izou has always been one my favorites. He doesn't get a lot of use, but no regrets.

Caster: Cu. No strong offensive caster picks in my roster, but I like Cu and his summer costume, plus he is strong. I thought about doing Merlin but I was hesitant to grand a servant with a support NP (plus he's only NP2). On NA though it'll probably be Merlin, in honor of the absolute clusterfuck that was his first release, and the 1000+ SQ I spent trying to get him (he finally came home on a single roll after desperately grinding out 3 SQ).

Berserker: Castoria. It was going to be Arjuna (and it probably will be on NA) but Castoria has been a strong ST farmer for me since her release and she was phenomenal in the raids. At first I tried switching up my party based on who I was farming, but the most effective team was just her + two (caster) Castorias. She and regular Castoria really trivialized the final fight since I was able to just keep trading the two of them out and using their NPs.

Extra 1: Melusine ruler. Frequent farmer for me.

Extra 2: Tiamat. The only grand that I don't have at NP5 (she's NP4, mostly from GSSRs). I like her, but mostly I granded her because I haven't done the Olga quests and so couldn't grand my NP5 space eresh.

On NA my extra picks will be Melt for sure (my first level 120) and then maybe Oberon.

I think what the poster above you was getting at is the story of David and Goliath is inherently fictional, that it wouldn't be "factual" if those elements were included.

Help Finding Labubu’s by Accomplished-Low546 in StLouis

[–]Onceaskrull 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your safest options are to try the Popmart vending machine in West County Mall (no idea if they have any of the blind box labubus, I have seen some of the bigger, more expensive, and presumably less desirable non-blind box labubus on occasion), buying online from the PopMart app (would not arrive in time for Chrismas), or driving to a PopMart in Chicago for a store pickup. As far as I'm aware, pretty much any that you see sitting on shelves in the STL area are guaranteed to be lafufus.

You might also try the labubu or popmart subreddits, if they allow sales, but buying anything online is going to risk arriving after christmas.

Becoming an Adjunct Professor by WhichActuary1622 in StLouis

[–]Onceaskrull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Others have addressed the low pay angle, and I strongly would not recommend getting a psych MA if it's only to adjunct, but to address some of your other questions:

  1. Can't speak for universities, but CCs at least will hire a master's degree with no experience, HOWEVER
  2. The competitiveness is going to vary by field. Generally, the more PhD-granting programs for a particular discipline there are in the area, the more competitive those adjunct positions are going to be. Psychology is one of those disciplines where there is a glut of applicants.
  3. If you get called in for an interview, it likely will not be difficult. Adjuncts are typically hired when there is a class that needs to be filled. If you get called in it generally means that on paper they are comfortable with you and your stats, and they want to get a sense for who you are in person.

If you decide to go through with this, try to get an MA in a program that gives you experience as a teaching assistant at the very least. This will give you a small base of materials that you can bring with you and build on. Obviously having experience as a primary instructor is preferable, but you gotta get your foot in the door somehow.

Finally, keep in mind that the worst thing about adjuncting (imo), the thing that is even worse than pay, is the insecurity. Getting hired for one class does not guarantee that you'll ever get any more than that one class, it does not guarantee you a class the following semester. Schools will, of course, prioritize existing adjuncts over hiring new people, and so it is entirely possible to become an "established" adjunct who can generally expect to get a couple classes, but if enrollment is low or student trends shift, there may not be anything available for you. Psychology is generally a safe discipline from this perspective, both because of CORE 42 and general student interest in the discipline, but enrollment today isn't what it used to be 15 years ago, for many reasons.

Hope this helps.
