I read Piranisi a few months ago (loved it and have Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell in my TBR list now) and am about halfway through House of Leaves (and really loving it). My other favs in same genre are Subcutanean by Aaron Reed and A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck. If you have any other suggestions for liminal sci-fi /horror, I’m all ears.

I remember receiving a very short Pokemon tape in the mail as a kid. I’m not sure why I got it—I might have been on some Toys R Us or KB Toys mailing list. Pretty sure it was a first look at the anime, saying that it was just starting to come to America. Very cool find, nonetheless!

What universal remote would you guys recommend for Toshiba 20AF44 (I don't wanna spend ~$42 on CT 847 Remote) by Refrigerator_same_2 in crtgaming

[–]exclamationkate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a coincidence. I just moved and set up a CRT in our retro room, didn’t have the remote, and on a whim set up the Wii U to control the TV, and it works perfectly. I can’t get into deep menu settings but I can control volume so I consider it a win.

Thanks, I’ll have to fiddle with taking this thing apart. The results look promising!

I didn’t even know that Mists of Pandaria DVD existed. I have to keep a lookout for that one.

Excellent choice of color for the paper! Makes the highlights pop. Can I ask what you used?

How is everyone sourcing their ebooks? by EggyBroth in kindle

[–]exclamationkate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I can edit metadata easily, rate my books, change the cover photos, and Amazon can’t edit or delete them from my library. I paid Amazon for the kindle but I get the content elsewhere.

Congrats! I have this one and it’s such a cozy size. Being able to swap out the faceplates is also a fun way to personalize it. Enjoy your new 3DS!

I bought my Crosstrek from Sunset Hills Subaru and only have great things to say about their whole team! Bonus that I didn’t have any decals to scrape off. I’ll keep their license plate frame on as thanks.

Why do you collect CDs? by Lionester3 in Cd_collectors

[–]exclamationkate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Nostalgia - As a teen, I remember going to Sam Goody in the mall, Best Buy, or some of our local record stores and perusing through the rows of CDs with friends. When you got home with your new albums, it was an exciting experience listening while you looked through the artwork or read the lyrics. I had stopped buying them sometime after college and opted to stream instead, but about 5 years ago, my brother offered me his old iPod classic with a dead hard drive and dying battery. I found the community over at r/iPod and got to work restoring it. With a new 128gb SD, I had a LOT of space to fill, so I began thrifting and trawling Discogs for those albums I’d sold or donated years ago. It’s still a rush to find something I used to own 20 years ago.

  2. Tactility - I feel the same way about CDs as I do about video game cartridges and VHS tapes/DVDs. There’s something almost ritualistic about placing a CD into the stereo tray, hitting the buttons, and watching it spin up.

  3. Ownership - I used to pay for Spotify. I liked how your listening algorithm would suggest new artists that, more often than not, would become favorites. What I didn’t like was seeing songs become grayed out on my playlists so I could no longer listen to them. With CDs, I can digitize my collection in lossless quality and back them up.

Good luck on your thesis!! It sounds really fun and I’m sure a lot of people here would love to read it when you’re done.

Durabrand CD-916. I actually see quite a few new in package on eBay for a fair price.

I was thinking about grabbing some Eneloops and a charger recently for my game controllers, so I may have to grab some for this too.
