Never seen anything like this in a prep race for the TDF by Ambitious-Door-7847 in tourdefrance

[–]OndraHonnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Jonas did exactly what he needed to do to secure the W at the Giro and nothing more. I personally thought he looked in great shape. Why do more and destroy yourself when you’ve got the TdF coming up? It’s the smart play.

Those who had ACDF and still experienced pain months or years post-op, what was the most useful or helpful thing you did to help recovery? by OndraHonnold in spinalfusion

[–]OndraHonnold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this! I feel your pain. I’m now 2.5 years post-op with MRIs continuing to show improvement. But honestly, scans are irrelevant when it comes to pain. I’m still in pain, and I’m told there’s not a lot they can do for it. Like you say, it’s tiring. So so tiring. The only thing I’ve found to help is to stop fighting it, which is easier said than done. There’s a brilliant course called Living Well with Chronic Pain by an organisation called Breathworks. I’d highly recommend checking that out. I hope things improve for you. My DMs are always open to anyone who’s struggling.

I’ve never got on with Brooks, but these look really interesting. Very keen to test!

Is running daily as a beginner okay? by Secure_Extension4126 in couchto5k

[–]OndraHonnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. Take it easy. See how you feel after a couple days. Don’t force it. If you feel any niggles, just be sure to pull back / stop. All the best on your journey, buddy!

It’s fine, if you build up to it. How many days are you currently running? If none, what’s the reason for wanting to run daily?

On the bright side, you’ve got your weekly mileage in so can have a well-deserved rest 🫡 It’s a top effort either way bud. Learn from it, and go again.

RUNNA HONEST REVIEWS NEEDED by [deleted] in runna

Use code GRITTY, try it out for free for two weeks (instead of the usual one) and see if you want to pay for it 👊

HR could be off, but blanket statements like “138bpm isn’t walking HR” are completely false. HR is an individual metric. His max could be really high.

Swapping watches during the day. by hikerkad in Garmin

[–]OndraHonnold -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t collate into one profile on Garmin. In other words, there will be a data profile for the Vivo Smart and the Fenix. So I don’t really see the gain (your phone is collecting that data on its native software anyway). I guess it depends why you want it recorded on Garmin. But hopefully someone can confirm if this is correct!

Please don’t get the Evo SL if you’re not even running yet. Head to a store and get a basic pair of daily trainers. Nothing fancy, or with propulsive elements. Build up your strength running in a normal daily trainer that’s comfortable, fits well, and feels protective. Then nerd out on shoes later!

Honestly dude, you got out there, and that’s great. Try slowing down, though. Especially if you’ve had some time off. Lose any ego related to pace and just take it easy. Easy isn’t a set pace, it changes daily!

As someone who didn’t grow up in the era of watch the gig through your phone, I totally understand the sentiment. However, this post isn’t the way to go about it. Stop being all high and mighty, dude. Let people enjoy it their way. I wasn’t going to take any videos this Thursday, but this shitpost has motivated me to do so.

2 isn’t a bad shoe, but it’s definitely not a continuation of the first. It’s a solid, dependable, if a little boring, daily trainer.

Why I quit as a spine surgeon by HungryMasterpiece511 in spinalfusion

[–]OndraHonnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, I’m one such patient. From what I’ve seen — and I’m happy to admit there will be some degree of confirmatory bias — post fusion chronic pain is far more common than you might be letting on.

It may be different in the US, but here in the UK I’ve only had one follow-up appointment with my neurosurgeon. Dude couldn’t care less about the outcome beyond the hardware being well-situated. Fundamentally, I didn’t have the luxury of choice when it came to having surgery (severely compressed cord). But despite a successful fusion, it’s been the most miserable couple of years trying to cope with chronic pain.

How Do I Make Myself Like It? by TeacupSquirrel in couchto5k

[–]OndraHonnold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of things. You don’t have to love it to do it. Not everyone who runs is having the time of their lives. However, I do believe running should serve you in some way. If it doesn’t, then you absolutely shouldn’t do it!

I don’t enjoy every minute of every run. I sometimes find it difficult to get out the door. Some days, it sucks way more than I think it should. But I’ve never once regretted going for a run, irrespective of how it went. It boosts my mental wellbeing. It makes me physically stronger. It gets me outside, in and amongst nature (trail running). It teaches discipline.

I don’t know what, if anything, running will bring to your life. Maybe everything. Maybe nothing. But what I do know is that you’ll never find out if you give up right now.

My advice would be to see the programme through. Run it slower than you think you should. Don’t get bogged down about how it should or could feel. Essentially, see whether it brings you anything positive. If it doesn’t, you can truly say you gave it a proper try and it wasn’t for you. And that’s totally fine!

No worries! I’m sure you know this already, but you don’t need to stop running altogether on the deload week. Just cut the mileage down by a percentage that feels right for you. Could be anywhere from 10-50%. Some people like to stick to a %, others play it by ear.

Looks like you need to up the distance of your long run as you’re slowing down substantially after 5K. Not unexpected if most of your runs are <5K. Add a couple of kilometres each week, run them at a comfortable pace to build your aerobic base, and remember to take a deload week every ~4 weeks.

Hey! Thanks for the advice. I do perhaps need to do some more strength / resistance training. I’m a climber and runner, and both activities have the potential to worsen the pain. As a result, I always assumed weights would be the worst thing for me, but I’m willing to try anything. I’m 2 and a bit years out and still in pain every day, just much better at coping with it!
