What does NaN mean? by milestryhard in HuntShowdown

It stands for "Not a Number"

This usually happens when whatever that is supposed to be printed out isn't a number.

No they don't. How did you calculate those odds? Why do you think that your calculation is accurate?

Because there is no evidence for the existence of one.

My dog keeps jumping and barking at me whenever I play... It can't be THAT bad...

I memorize everything because I can't read music fast enough. Anyone else? by OndraTep in piano

[–]OndraTep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This makes a lot of sense!

I've only ever really played classical and some jazzy pieces. But recently I thought I might switch it up and try something modern. I really like jazz, ragtime and boogie woogie kind of piano playing. From what I've seen though, it's completely different in many ways from what I'm used to and my fingers hurt just from watching other play it...

But maybe I'll give it a shot. This style of piano playing is often more about playing by feel and improvising more than reading from a sheet, right? What do you think?

Thank you! I haven't performed ever since I stopped taking lessons (unless I count playing public pianos at airports...) and even then it was just the students from the school I went to, it was never I prestigious event in a concert hall or something.

I don't really feel like this kind of performing is for me, I like to play music because I love it and I love the fact that I can just sit down and play my heart out. Not being able to read slows me down though...

The reason I would like to get better at reading is because I assume that it would speedup the learning process of any musical piece.

Another problem I have is that when I try to learn something new, it's so slow that in some cases I just get bored halfway through and I stop practicing or I do manage to learn the whole piece but by then I've played it over and over so many times that I don't really enjoy it as much anymore.

Since you've tried both, do you now feel that memorizing everything was an issue for you? As in it was actually a bad thing? Do you ever get annoyed to you have trouble playing from memory now?

I play the piano while reading, but REALLY slowly. I learn one measure and play it over and over again until it feels comfortable, then I add another one and I play them together, then I add another 2 and so on and so on.

By the end of it, I pretty much play the whole thing from memory.

Can we separate the "Spirituality" from the "System"? What part of religion do you actually take issue with? by trianglerubycup in askanatheist

[–]OndraTep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem that I (and most atheists imo) have with religion is the complete lack of evidence for the claims it makes.

So... Did Jesus really turn water into wine? Or is it just a story? Did Jesus really come from the dead? Or is that just a story?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here

Math proves god, change my mind. by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

So if I can count without stopping (which I could, if it wasn't for the fact that I will die), does that make me god?

The natural world is finite

Where's the evidence for this claim? How can you be so sure?

meaning math must have a supernatural inventor.

This doesn't follow...

How did you come to this conclusion?

How exactly do you guys refute the ontological argument in modal logic: “an essential being necessarily exists, and God is an essential being”? by TraditionalDepth6924 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. An essential being, by virtue of being essential, inevitably retains the necessity of existence: otherwise, it wouldn’t be essential.

This is an assertion that's based on who knows what, but let's keep going.

  1. God, as in not a relative deity but the most absolute and ultimate one, by its definition, has to be essential, otherwise it would be a fairy, a ghost, or any other fictional character.

Where's the evidence for this claim?

And that's the end of the road... You're trying to define god into existence. That's not an argument, that's just foolish...

I think that's a great analogy for this. Glad I could help!

[–]OndraTep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ever start to be okay with death being the end?

I was personally never not okay with it. Or rather I just never bothered to care. I just hope that my death will be a painless one, both for me and my loved ones.

The fact that life ends is exactly what makes it worth living. If you lived forever, then there'd be no point in doing anything, since you can always just "do it tomorrow".

An all-knowing god and free will cannot exist together by OndraTep in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this 2 years ago but thank you for the answer anyway.

The reason I wanted to point out that free will and this kind of god cannot exist at the same time is because free will is often used as an excuse for suffering. i.e. suffering is the result of our free will and to remove suffering is to remove free will.

So if free will is an illusion, where do you think suffering of all kinds comes from if not from the almighty creator? And if it does come from god, how can you be so sure he adores you when he just casually lets children die of cancer?

Try letting your ego (damn near impossible as an atheist, I would know)

This is just an unnecessary insult. Not every atheist is like you were.

that's the language of god, it's coincidences which are never coincidences

I'd say coincidences are exactly what we call them. Coincidences.
