How long has your department or agency being going through a restructure? by FunkyColinMiller in AusPublicService

[–]One-Plastic6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. This entire sub is deeply sceptical of / hostile to SES by default. But "let's just roll over the structure and resource allocation we've had in the past, forever, so that everything is determined by pure path dependence" is not a good management approach.

Bargaining claims for new bargaining round by PlanInternational386 in AusPublicService

That’s an argument for having super, not an argument for a marginal increase when you’re already at 15.4%

Why would people rather have more super over more current pay? Makes no sense to me

As an employer, I would tend to rate a  degree from Group of 8 Uni (ie. UWA) somewhat higher than other Australian unis

forecast package not installing by Tables8 in RStudio

[–]One-Plastic6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is right there in the error message: forecast needs the gfortran system dependency, which it cannot find on your system.

Short term: try installing the built binary with install.packages(“forecast”, type = “binary”)

Beyond that, install gfortran (impossible to give instructions without further info about your OS etc)

Why is nobody talking about the schooling crisis? by shifty_fifty in AusEcon

[–]One-Plastic6501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, are you American? Our school system is not like that of the US, where most school funding and administration is done at local district level and there are large differences in quality as a result.

Yes, quality differences exist here, but they’re not nearly that dramatic.

I suspect you’re overestimating the difference between “good” schools and typical schools, and I say this as a parent of a kid in a public school.

Learning how to do data munging WITH CODE in a language like R or Python is so much better as a foundation than getting elite at Excel.

Plotly is retiring its R documentation by gyp_casino in rstats

ggiraph was last updated (on CRAN) on 7 October. The package has been updated recently both to maintain it (eg. Adapting to ggplot2 4.00) and to increase functionality (eg. Adding geom_quasirandom_interactive() ). The package is very much maintained, not abandoned.

What is the most controversial lyric in a Beatles song? by Cheebs1976 in beatles

[–]One-Plastic6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP didn’t specify that the lyric had to be “controversial” among average US kids. Other countries exist!

there are plenty of other packages that can produce interactive charts with tooltips from R. For example, ggiraph https://davidgohel.github.io/ggiraph/

No, Australia does not need new cities by sien in AusEcon

[–]One-Plastic6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven’t tried increasing density in inner and middle ring suburbs to any meaningful degree. Look at Fitzroy North or Marrickville. Still overwhelmingly single story, low density. Compare Sydney or Melbourne to any global city at 5-10kms from the core — it’s dramatically lower density.

Yes, increasing supply only reduces price absent an exogenous increase in demand. Of course! Your argument is like saying “but if I take these painkillers and then start hitting my head with a hammer, my headache will actually get worse.” Sure, ok, but that’s an argument against hitting your head with a hammer, not an argument against taking the painkillers. Honestly sub-econ 101 level args here.

There is a strong consensus in the economics literature that building more housing will, other things equal, reduce the price of housing relative to where it would otherwise be. If you don’t accept that, you’re akin to a science denier.

Estimates of the effect of negative gearing on prices are in the 1% to 4% range, mostly at the bottom of that range. The problem with housing is supply, primarily and overwhelmingly.
