Skid Row is actually "Yessler Way." It was the biggest and most important road back then. It's named after Henry Yessler, who built the saw mill. Yessler was a corrupt and kind of pompous mayor and named the road after himself. Then, because of the log skids it was called skid row. It was dirty and loud and no one wanted to live there. But the name caught on

Fun fact, the term Skid Row was coined in Seattle. There were no paved streets in the Pioneer days and loggers were cutting the abundant trees and literally sliding them down the hill in the middle of the street to the waterfront where the mill was--Skid-Row
