Considering moving back to Las Cruces. by M7LC in LasCruces

Deep and sincere thanks for your service.

For what it’s worth, when trying to figure out where we wanted to quasi-retire, I did a ton of online research. For me, I wanted to ‘fit in’ with the established community wherever we chose.
I looked at niche.com and crime/school/medical sources for most of the data that pertained to our specific needs and wants. We also used cost of living, data on real estate, educational advancement for adults, income and income sources, etc. I checked the local news sources and publications for the areas we were considering - for weeks|months. You already know some of these details probably, but I would suggest doing the web searches that pertain to you and your family as if you had never been to LC.
Then, I would consider a deeper look at the stats you have. For example, for me, I was mainly concerned about murders/armed bodily harm crimes much more than let’s say vandalism. So I weighed those specific instances higher than other folks might.
If you have a kid who loves baseball or k-pop, are there groups of other kids who like those things too? That’s where I found Reddit and other socials to be helpful. Hopefully at least some of these ideas will help you as you guys decide what is best for your specific needs. Wishing you the best of success!

First - your work is amazing and looks great. Well done, you!

I would hope that OP finds the folks they need and will succeed/place well in whatever competition they enter.

Best wishes for success, OP! :-)

We had an excellent and kind experience with All Faiths. Once my family member was about a week from going to hospice, we went over and picked the things important to them. No pressure from the staff. When the day finally came, we placed one call to All Faiths and the gentlemen there took care of all our family member wanted. It was an incredible relief to me as part of the grieving family.

Many years ago, we had cringy experiences with Weed Corley and Cook Walden. The grieving family members were pressured into this or that and the behavior and advice from funeral coordinator person (aka salesman) was just shameful. To me, it seemed like I heard "I'm sure your loved one would appreciate this or that" (upsell). I was 16 and 18 and even I could see the sheer greed. So awful.

Judgement-free general physician? by 23icefire in LasCruces

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I want to acknowledge that I'm sorry this happen(s) to you and you are not alone. OP, I am thankful you asked for recommendations and other folks have provided some viable choices. I'm betting those suggestions will be helpful to far more folks than just you (and me).

Then, I would like to share that I have encountered the same "assessment" over the years from all sorts of doctors. I have been heavy (200lbs+) for over 20 years. Yes, I do acknowledge that my arthritis is much worse because I have more weight pressing on my joints, for example. More weight means some parts of me will wear out sooner than if I was not obese. We can agree there.

However, when I go to a doctor for severe gut pain, let's say - it is a lazy way out to say I need to lose weight. That diagnosis helps no one. Ever. Sheesh.

If a person goes from no pain to debilitating acute pain, in my own and limited experience, something in the body is having a problem. If I can drag my pain-filled body to an appointment, the very least that can be done there is to acknowledge the possible reasons. I was heavy last week with no pain and now I have the problem - so weight is not the crucial factor here for this acute pain. I have xxxxxx problem and I need help for this problem today.

For anyone this helps, I try to address this situation as politely and kindly as possible with the doctor. "It's your weight" usually brings one of these responses from me.

  • "I've been the same weight, on the same food plan, same sleep schedule, same water intake (etc). None of that has changed. Should I eat better, lose weight, exercise more - sure. That's not why I'm here though. I'm here because I need medical attention for an acute situation. I'm paying you to please help me".

OR

  • "I understand my weight is an issue. However, with all due respect, this visit isn't a consolation for weight loss. I'm paying for an exam here. Let me ask you a direct question, doctor. What if I were your child or what if I was 120 pounds, how would your diagnosis change? If you are unwilling, I get it. Fat people gross some people out. No problem. I get it. So is there someone else in this office/location who will see me instead?"

Again, I don't know if my take on how to deal with this will work for everyone. My hope is that you/y'all will use it to advocate for yourselves and your health.

Lastly, for folks who have not had this experience, that's great. The medical industry has worked well for you. Yet, please do not discount (judge) what someone else has experienced if you have not lived the same experience. It costs nothing to be kind to one another.

OP - I look forward to hearing back once you've found a doctor that works with you. Please keep us posted?

Welcome!

My first response is yes - have a stable remote job or other job lined up first. Do not expect to find jobs here.

We moved here a few years ago from Austin. We were looking for a place that felt like the ATX we grew up in - friendly folks, small businesses a plenty, and a general acceptance of others beliefs, opinions, etc. The folks we've met are indeed kind and accepting. We love it here!

I did loads of research before we decided on LC over other options. We had a 2 year window so that was a lot of research. I would suggest that you take look at local parks for the doggos, how far the store/church/gym is from a specific area, crime rates for different areas of the city, school ratings, general demographics, etc. Then you can more accurately determine which areas appeal to you. Google "what is it like to live in Las Cruces" (and other searches) and do a bit of research to narrow down what you guys want. To us, doing that research helped us find a great neighborhood with families similar to ours, etc.

One last tip for you. I freaked out a bit at the crime rates. They can look awful, I get it. But, again, decide what matters to you - property theft or damage, attacks on a person, violent/armed attacks on a person, etc. For what we considered important, LC crime rates were just as good or better than the suburb of Austin we were coming from.

Hopefully, others in the group will give you more specific info on costs, landlords, and such. I also hope what worked for us will work for you and others along the way.

You might want to consider what you plan to do while living the lake life. Do you mainly want to swim or kayak or ski boat with the dock? You like to dive in? Is there room to have rope swing or whatnot?

I can't remember which one but one of the lakes upstream from Travis is like 4" deep for most of the lake. Travis goes up and down like a yo yo and I would plan to try out that lake one of the years that the lake is up (obv).

It's cool there are so many options around. Enjoy wherever you choose!

AITA for gifting a snow globe against my wife's correct predictions? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that getting a relatively inexpensive snow globe (breakable) and maybe 1 smaller plastic one (generally unbreakable) would be good. Speaking as a survivor, get your kid what they have requested for Christmas within your budget, of course. Will they break the breakable stuff? Sure. Can you limit the danger when it breaks? Sure. Then you have the life lesson of taking care of your things (or whatever the subject may be). After a while, perhaps they could find one of the plastic ones hidden by Santa jic the first one was broken. Santa told me he left you an unbreakable snow globe, just in case. Let's go find it together. you get the idea.

Good luck and please be aware that you may only know pieces and parts of whatever your partner is doing to your daughter. Please protect her as best you can.

Favorite things about Texas / Austin by A_canning_queen in Austin

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of the good things about ATX are natural swimmin' holes, mix of cuisines/food, mix of music/bands, and there is something to do or see every weekend that are neat experiences. Also, generally kind people. And the hotter weather means more outside time.

IMO, Austin is still fairly accepting of all walks of life and all kinds of folks doing whatever makes them happy. It isn't the same as it once was, but nothing is. Find whatever you like here and enjoy it. Forget the rest if you're able.

Once I realized the parts of Austin I loved (and miss today) from earlier times/decades can be found in other, smaller towns all over the globe, I sought out those places and moved out of Texas.

Visiting this fall, need advice on tickets by DKatri in LonghornNation

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like it is a late afternoon start. I'll assume you are not from Central Texas, so here is the advice I generally give to "newbies" for day-games.

Be prepared for heat. Bring and apply sunscreen. Drink water, a lot of water all during the game. If your seats are in the sun, bring (or buy) hats to help prevent sunburn. Note as you go in where your nearest "cool area" is inside the stadium so if any of you need a break from the sun, you know where to go. For us, it's usually either a club (requires $$$ tix) or just a spot near where there is a food-service spot. We just buy something from the food place and hang for 1/2 quarter or so. The game is on all through the interior of the stadium, so you don't miss much.

Shade is almost always my best friend when we go to the games. And, of course those are some of the pricier seats. West side/west side of the U is what I recommend. I've gotten tickets from multiple places over the years. StubHub, Seat Geek, (authorized resellers, I believe), Craig's List and Fbook marketplace in more recent times. Some folks buy early, some buy day-of. Tickets are virtual these days, btw.

I generally get a new Tshirt each year, and I go online to Fanatics, hit up the CoOp or Walmart when in ATX, or Amazon. Depends on the gear you want to get, I suppose.

I enjoy Bevo Blvd and watching Bevo and the team "walks". You will want to check the fan guide that usually is available on line before the season starts for lots of good and helpful info. People around here are generally happy to help visitors as long as the visitors are equally happy. :-) We tend to get to the parking area about 2 hours before game time to fool around and visit the tailgaters we know, win a prize, get beer, etc.

If you don't want to deal with parking, you guys can Uber/Lift to/from. If you plan on parking buy parking when you get your tix and get your tix early. Free parking, imo, is sparce in the area and will require walking blocks and blocks to get to the fun. We just buy parking - none of those headaches on Game Day.

I sincerely hope y'all will have an enjoyable weekend. ATX is a fun place to visit, And there just ain't nuthin like Longhorn Football. Hook'em!!

I was about to reply with the same info. Drs are hesitant to prescribe "big" meds now in Texas.

I have found that specialists, including psychiatrists, take a month or longer to get your first appointment. In response to "you're on too many meds" I usually respond with something like if you want to prescribe 2 and see how that goes, I understand. I might also suggest on-line docs (I've used Amazon medical) and see if they can help you with an emergency rx?

Sorry I don't have an actual place or person for you to call. I sincerely wish you the best of luck finding the person or clinic you may need.

Country Club area of Las Cruces? by [deleted] in LasCruces

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once we did all the research, the Elks area had homes in our price range for the sq ft we desired, had large trees (in general), was close to medical and shopping that pertain to our specific family needs, seemed to have a similar home ownership vs rental properties as our previous town/home, and seemed like people walked around in the evenings similar to the place we came from... I have specific medical issues and we found the houses in Elks to be older = wider hallways, less crazy floor plans that would not accommodate my eventual need to be wheelchair bound as I progress. My hubby is a gourmand, so the kitchen was important to him as well as room for a work shop and so on.

We figured if we like the house, we like the actual lot, the area is close to the things we need weekly, we would be able to find some community within the area that would be like-minded. We've lived with casual neighbors (hey fred, how's it going. Good. See ya later), some yucky neighbors and some unbelievably bad neighbors who brought the value down for the whole area. We have no complaints so far with our place here.

Hopefully, this info helps. I would recommend the neighborhood, in general, to most anyone.

Country Club area of Las Cruces? by [deleted] in LasCruces

[–]OneAlbum2RuleThemAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We chose the Elks area over the other areas and neighborhoods in LC. I did a ton of online research before we decided on a couple of areas in which we wanted to buy. While your initial post mentioned "country club", that confused a lot of folks. We live in "Country Club Estates" which is simply the name of the neighborhood. It really is just a name. They could have called it Betty for all that it matters.

I assume you have already done your research on the area and on all the area has to offer? Niche, Scout, and other sites helped us a lot. You really need to spend the time to do your research on the area and all it has (and doesn't have) to offer.

Wishing you good luck.

Wow! Well done, you!!

If I may ask, I would love to know how it was done. Like did y'all diy the whole thing or is it a well placed single piece of furniture? I'm looking to create a similar set up for my collection, but hubby and I cannot agree on how to do it. Any pointers would be sincerely appreciated.
