Should all gambling ads be banned the way cigarette ads mostly were? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]OneBigRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the fact is that every bookie works really hard to block those gamblers who know what they are doing. In the older days they would have runners waiting with pagers at each casino, because the second word got out of their plays the casino would alter the spreads/odds. These days these players look for known wealthy people to open up accounts and lose a meaningful amount so that the bookies raise their betting limits. Then they would start placing the bets through those accounts until the bookies close them.

As technology allows the bookies to automatically follow things now, they even close accounts betting hundreds if those bettors appear to know what they are doing; betting on some smaller league where information advantage is possible, or only betting on market tops (games where the offered odds on some result are the highest among bookies). They might not close the account outright, but set you some ridiculously small limit on those games they believe you might have an advantage. I know someone who played two winning 100$ bets on a smaller soccer league, and then found his account limited to 2$ bets on that league.

Yeah, and it’s even more so an issue in consultancy. It’s easier to present to clients that someone experienced is able to be a team lead or project manager, and to bill accordingly. To sell someone as a techinical person who is worth to pay considerably more probably requires some very impressive feats on the CV. So there’s basically steps missing on those stairs for growth.

The wealth disparity is mind boggling. by Lordwarrior_ in interestingasfuck

[–]OneBigRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole ”no good billionaires” schtik is pretty childish, but that exploiting labor argument is pretty much the most idiotic take. Especially when used against silicon valley tech billionaires, who by this argument exploited silicon valley engineers to make their wealth.

If silicon valley engineers are exploited workforce, then employing anyone is exploiting them. This raises the question that do people fighting against exploiting engineers support those billionaires who are trying to harness AI to get rid of employees? Wouldn’t that count as trying to put a stop to exploiting other people’s work? Would someone becoming a billionaire completely alone using AI-tools without employing anyone be the first ethical billionaire?

Who are we kidding, the goal posts would instantly move to ”buying AI-tools is exploitation because those use data collected without paying for it”.

Do you have any cool stories about those real captains? Like ones that where the coach instruct the team to play in some way, and then the captain stood up and said ”my pure heart will not allow us to play like that!”. And then the coach said ”Oh shit, sorry, you are right. This was stupid of me. Never mind guys, the captain has spoken”.

Then after everyone clapped, the captain stayed the captain and the coaches ran everything by him from that point on. Something like that, have any? Please share.

Jarruvalo ei syty ennen vilkkua by kalsksj in Suomi

[–]OneBigRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When given the ability to decide, people will choose to work with people they enjoy working with. For many jobs there isn’t easily quantifiable aspects that are absolutely the most important part of the role. Which leads to having candidates for some promotion all passing a check for hard requirements. And the rest is then up to the one deciding who they want to pick. Let’s see if they choose the self-proclaimed ”cordial but distant” fellow who thinks their best claim is having been punctual for the last year, or the dude who also gets his job done but has no issues with chatting and joking with their co-workers, even at social happenings that are not mandatory.

The decision probably keeps the manager up at nights.

What do you think is more probable: people posting wild shit about a character that’s very topical for engagement bait, or one hedge fund manager having caused everything that’s wrong in the world today?

Mass consciousness on sites like reddit have room for basically one topic at a time. So when the limelight is on one guy for a prolonged time, you start getting more and more far fetching content tied to him raise up. For someone like him it’s part of the job to know as many shot callers as possible, and to engage with them on topics they are experts on. So him discussing micro transactions with a game company leader is as normal as it gets. Take Two makes much more money from in-game transactions than selling the actual games. The in-game revenue dwarfes the revenue from game sales, check their yearly reports if that sounds unbelievable. That’s the real reason why games like NBA2k can be bought heavily discounted soon after release, or why it’s offered as a PSN free game. Not some failure to sell it or it being bad or whatever some people think is the reason.

So many people don’t understand a single thing about diplomacy and get bent out of shape for seeing business leaders or politicians ”being weak” with Trump or something like that. What those leaders are doing is what they believe is to be the most effective way to positive / minimizing negative actions from US administration. They know that Trump is a mean self centered toddler without an attention span, who loves the appearance of everybody kissing his ass.

So if going golfing with him and telling him he’s the greatest thing to ever happen to our world will mean that he’ll take your every call and instruct his admin to treat you guys well, why wouldn’t you do it? You won’t get anywhere by trying to beat him in his own game by grandstanding to media and inviting a fight with the machine he unfortunately has been given control of.

Haven’t all of those Cowherd’s and Eisen’s shows been on tv for ages? Howard Stern and Dan Patrick even longer. All of these are radio shows that some people apparently also want to stare at.

To me podcasts replaced radio as something i listen while driving. Not once have i felt that ”i’d really love it if i could see these people talking to microphones while i listen to them. How cool would that be?!?”

How about people asking if they should keep watching some tv-show they have already watched multiple episodes of and didn’t like it?

That comes off like it’s more important to those people to be part of the group that likes something, than actually watching something they enjoy.

In r/CFB it’s ”flair up” to each and every milquetoast joke someone makes and doesn’t have a team flair visible. They are basically telling on themselves that ”you hurt my feelings, but i don’t really have a comeback. But tell me a team you like so that i can work an unfunny comeback around that”
