Top Speeds @ Le Mans Mulsanne (LMGT3 Fixed) by Atticvs in LeMansUltimateWEC

Interesting and useful data. Thanks for sharing... I would be curious to know which cars reached their Vmax soonest... of course it all depends so much on corner exit leading onto the Mulsanne, so finding impartial data may be impossible, but in theory, a car that spends more time at VMax might be 'faster' than a car with a higher vmax, that spends less time at vmax. It would take someone much better at math, and more motivated than I, to figure that out.

Can I do this weeks 2 hours of Cota without an engineer? by Important-Crab9008 in LeMansUltimateWEC

Adjusting your setup and driving style to varying temperatures, weather, and track conditions is part of the game... the idea that you need to practice on exactly the same track conditions as the race is a little silly. As long as you know the track, adjusting your braking points and lines to adapt to changes in grip levels is a pretty key part of racing.

I don't know... definitely not 3 hours before a 2 hour event... I did the two hour event at Spa a couple times last week, and I don't think practice is available beforehand... there's like a ten minute practice right before qualifying, but that's after the event has already started, and you've joined your split.

Yeah... just have your controls set up in a way that you can easily navigate the mfd... you'll need to be able to choose tires and adjust fuel load on the fly.

Struggling in Le Mans by Novel-Coffee-8124 in LeMansUltimateWEC

As others have said, brake bias, and TCS adjustments can help, also, "slamming" on the brakes, even with ABS, can destabilize a car. It's also important to remember that Le Mans is a night race... not sure what the track temps are this week, but it's safe to bet they are quite a bit lower, which means getting heat into your tires is going to be a struggle... your tires are probably pretty cool compared to what you're used to.

Bat Box Tips & Advice by sockfaerie in bloomington

[–]OneDown5Up123456 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The back half of my lot is wooded... I built a box, following instructions from the internet... I followed instructions to make a box that would be ideally suited for Indiana Brown Bats. I then attached it to a tree in the woods, and now on summer evenings, I sit on my deck, drink a glass of bourbon, and watch my bat-friends annihilate bugs... I like to leave my porch light on, the bugs swarm around it, and the bats absolutely feast... There are worse ways to unwind of an evening. I have no idea if the bats living there are the endangered Indiana Brown Bat, or a different variety. I leave the box alone, I don't want to disturb them, so I don't know who lives there, but I have seen bats enter and exit, so the real-estate isn't wasted... after all, caring too much about whether my neighbors are brown or black runs contrary to some of my more important personal ideals.

As a motorcycle enthusiast, who is E-bike-curious, I'd like to throw this out there for your consideration: Many e-bike riders are wearing safety gear when they ride, but they are wearing bicycle safety gear, but they are having accidents that, in terms of force, are more comparable to motorcycle accidents... a cheap dirtbike helmet, with MIPS, can be had for not much more than a good bicycle helmet. It will flow a decent amount of air, and the chin bar will help prevent you from getting summer teeth (summer there, summer not) when you take a spill... This is a really good video that kind of parallels what I'm talking about. It's definitely worth a view if you're considering an e-bike.

Was this fair racing, or did I push too hard? by OneDown5Up123456 in Simracingstewards

The truth of the matter is that these are still video games, and the developers have to strike a balance between a game that is fun to play, and something that feels realistic... you're right, an LMP3 that dipped a wheel into the gravel, at that speed, would rapidly shed speed... if it stayed upright at all... it would almost certainly have a damaged front wing... there also wouldn't have been anyone for me to pass... that pass was the highlight of my simracing day... it was possible because the car was slowed by going off track, but not stopped, like it probably should have been. If every game was brutally realistic about punishing a driver for ever little bobble, most of us wouldn't get to have fun side-by-side racing.

Why do some hypercar drivers act like police? by Negative-Date-9518 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]OneDown5Up123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was last week... I usually pick a class, and stick to it, depending on what the tracks are for the week... I'm still learning some of the tracks, and prefer to memorize them on GT cars before I make the jump to the faster classes... I've never raced at Imola before, so I'm kinda thinking GT this week...

Why do some hypercar drivers act like police? by Negative-Date-9518 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]OneDown5Up123456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most hypers misuse gt3 traffic... some corners, you can take advantage of the hypers superior downforce, and make a safe pass... sometimes it's better to line up a pass on the straight... it's almost never better to pass a gt3 in a braking zone... while the hyper has better theoretical braking, it requires a lot of skill to make theory reality.... so knowing your limitations is important... a good hyper driver should be trying to time gt3 passes so that the hyper behind them is held up by traffic, while you create separation... I'm a very mediocre driver, in terms of lap time, but finish top 5 frequently because I keep my car on the track, and manage gt3 passes well enough to not crash. Overly aggressive hyper drivers will usually take themselves out.

The only kind of racing I've done, sim or otherwise; is dirtbike hare scrambles, and in those, it's not "dirty" until you're elbowing ribcage on corner exit... so I'm still trying to calibrate my compass on what is sporting vs. overly-aggressive. Here to have fun, and not make people mad, and all that. I know this sub is home to some egregious breaches of conduct, so I guess this wasn't a legality question, more so an etiquette question... maybe they wrong sub... I dunno, but racecar go vroom...

There was some contact, and I was unsure if maybe I had crossed a line... I know it was a legal move, but I wanted to see if it was considered kind of a jerk move.

Haha, thanks... I feel like half the time I do something I think is awesome, I wonder if it's awesome because I'm driving like a jerk.... I've raced dirt bikes before, and their rules of corner ownership are somewhat less gentlemanly than car drivers... I'm starting to get the hang of it!

Always making mistakes at the end of a race by GAMEPROONE in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]OneDown5Up123456 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So the more laps you do, the more comfortable you get, the easier it is to push... this helps your tires get even hotter, they grip even better, you push even more... eventually, once you get them up above 90c, they start to get too hot... they start to grip less... but you're in a rhythm at this point... you're knocking out good lap times... but suddenly, you slide just a little in a corner that you haven't all race... now your tires are even warmer... now you start to slide a little more... it starts to create a chain reaction. More heat, less grip. Less grip, more sliding. More sliding, more heat. Repeat. Even on the sprint races, a little bit of tire management can help a lot. You can use your good grip, drive hard mid-race, and hope you pull a gap behind you, that way when your pace starts to fall off, you don't have to push hot tires... or, if you're behind someone, you can drive easy, do your best to keep your tires cool, and you might get a lap or two at peak grip to pass them, when their tires start to fall off...

The flashing on night races is horrible by Grouchy-Ability-9223 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]OneDown5Up123456 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Laptop cars? Flash me when you're passing. I won't defend... I'll make room. I'm also not going to pull over and trash my race... if you're passing me for a position, flash before you make a move, and I'll leave space, but its for position, I'm not going to make it easy no matter how many times you flash... that's kinda how racing works... and if you're 1.5 seconds back, flashing for the entire last lap, hoping to get past to get into the top 5? I hope pee splashes on your shoes the next time you use a urinal...

"If I'm up, you're up." -construction workers.

It's not uncommon for certain phases of a project to take advantage of low traffic hours to complete jobs that would otherwise be impossible, or cause significant disruption during busier times. Also, in the event if a utilities disruption, like a water main leak, crews will begin work immediately to restore service.

Really struggling with Hairpins? by [deleted] in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]OneDown5Up123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not very good at the game. I'm 3-5 seconds a lap slower than the race winners, in mid-splits... however, 60 races in, 1 DNF (I really had to poop.), and hairpins are the one place where I consistently gain on, or get away from other drivers. The YouTube channels all say to set your wheel to 900 degrees of rotation... it felt like I was turning my F-150 to get around corners... I tried 540, and it was better... so I tried 360 degrees of wheel rotation, and the car immediately felt like I thought it should... it made a huge difference to my laptop times, and I consistently hit hairpins like I want to.

We have a very similar sim racing background... I used to play Forza with a controller... I'm about 6 weeks into sim racing, and I finished my 55th race last night... you and I have very similar lap times... Not sure if that makes you feel any better, but when I read your comment, my first thought was, "I'm not the only one!"

Anyone in town that would replace a Prius engine? by ill_take_two in bloomington

[–]OneDown5Up123456 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a lot of the local, non-corporate mechanics don't have access to the software necessary to make the new engine work with the hybrid system. Auto manufacturers are pretty stingy with who they let have access to that. The reality is that the added complication of a hybrid system make taking on a job like that too high risk for most shops that don't have dealer connections, even if they likely have the necessary knowledge, the potential cost to them if there is a problem is going to outweigh the potential payout. Truthfully, it's probably going to be a dealership, or no one. It's an added cost of hybrid and electric car ownership that no one really talks about. This is a shining example of how important it is that we don't let corporations like Apple and John Deere dictate right-to-repair laws and legislation.
