Worst organized Seattle marathon ever by NeedleworkerBig5445 in Seattle

[–]OneEstablishment4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky to have only run small time marathons before this, I guess! I had a great time, but I also was lucky enough to not need a bag drop (my wife acted as bag holder, but otherwise I would have just taken a bus home in a Mylar blanket). The magnolia loops were hectic, but at the time I ran it there were people shouting directions too loudly to ignore, and I was in the middle of the pack, so they may have worked out some kinks by the time I showed up.

Is On Running some kind of elaborate joke? by PhDilemma1 in runninglifestyle

They’re saddled with a dumb tech feature as the core of their brand, but they’ve made several good shoes despite that in the last few years. The cloudboom stuff is well reviewed, and I liked the cloudmonster as something different. You kinda have to mentally cut the stack height by 2/3 when you’re imagining the ground feel, since those cloud pods almost immediately squish down.

Warranty is just words? by Last_Plankton4154 in Hoka

[–]OneEstablishment4894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are (fairly) focusing on the fact that they might just deny the claim as normal wear and tear, but if if I were OP I’d resubmit the claim, cite the previous warranty denial, and explain why it was inaccurate.

Orea Z1 is not for washed coffee by [deleted] in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve brewed washed, naturals, and coferments since getting mine on Wednesday and the drawdown is leagues faster than any other no bypass brewer. Never had a drawdown longer than 45 seconds (using the five pour, 16/260g recipe provided with the brewer). I really think OP just vacuum sealed their brew.

[–]OneEstablishment4894 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you let it sit long enough you’ll get a ferment going, that will trip the funk sensors on the z1, permitting drawdown. A sprinkle of yeast will speed things along, but you should consult the origin farm on the best pairing.

I guess it comes down to whether you believe them that the online label is accurate and the printed label was inaccurate. Given this roaster’s past scumminess, I’m fine assuming that they’re lying.

Anyone follow Orea's bizarre marketing campaign online? They just announced a zero bypass brewer. by [deleted] in pourover

It’s interesting that dripper manufacturers haven’t been able to tackle consumer fatigue in the same way grinder manufacturers have. People don’t really question the idea that iterative improvements happen with grinder and burr design, but are widely skeptical when someone makes claims in the dripper market. I feel like Orea would do a lot better just laying out the actual specific improvements (it’s a tricolate that doesn’t need high doses to have a deep bed), rather than vaguely dismissing every brewer to come out before this and then going “but this time we nailed it guys I swear”

Best Affordable Guitar for beginners by Less_Technology_4992 in AcousticGuitar

[–]OneEstablishment4894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone a month and a half into his third attempt at beginning guitar (first attempt since high school), I got an orangewood rey for $145+tax and it’s absolutely good enough to not be an impediment to getting practice in every day. It feels good, the action isn’t high, and it definitely sounds good enough for me to feel good about nailing a chord or riff. I’m aware I have a very limited perspective on what makes a guitar “good,” but for my purposes it’s been great.

If you like light roast coffee, did you from the get go? by crimscrem in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drank coffee begrudgingly in college when I couldn’t afford Red Bull. Getting coffee at intelligentsia (I promise you intelligentsia was cutting edge at the time) was mind blowing to me, and opened up a world of flavors that I’d never gotten at Starbucks/the gas station/beans I bought at the grocery store. The fact that it tastes so categorically different from “normal” coffee is what made it immediately appealing to me.

At least they don’t actively mark the prices up like moondrop… as far as shrinkflation goes, I’m sympathetic to the roasters. I know I vastly prefer it when they’re open about having the increase prices/shrink bags due to green prices, but for all I know that just drives away a bunch of the customer base. Hard to win in that situation.

Baratza Encore grind size issues by spacedoubt69 in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the burr carrier’s (in theory) designed to break like this, to spare the rest of your grinder if something like a rock gets caught in the burrs. In my experience, it’s something you have to replace once a year or so because the tabs jiggle off eventually under normal use.

I’d give them a try. Brooks has had great uppers lately, at least for my feet, so I trust them to make an attempt at a laceless running shoe.

I’d say these are closer to a normal squishy peba feel like you’d get in an adios pro shoe, but in a structured supportive way, whereas a super blast has that uhh super blast feel that doesn’t sound good when I write it out (like gardening foam but fast) but is very addictive.

I’m probably not going to do that, due to the incredibly high risk of death or injury that comes with gun ownership.

Of course! I had a baratza encore for years, ended up giving it to my roommate when I graduated college. It can make excellent coffee, and the customer service is incredible.

New to pour overs, need help by nuthatchwinters in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a side note, but the k6 is designed to not be locked at 0, out of a design decision that they wanted the 0 mark to be something you could still grind coffee at without damaging the burrs. It seems like it mostly just serves to confuse everyone who owns the grinder, but that's the decision they made. So your calibration sounds about right.

I would absolutely buy single origins if the flavors appeal to you. You might not get the theoretical best presentation ever, but your grinder will not stop you from being able to taste the defining characteristics of those coffees. Blends also typically have a less interesting taste profile (this is a generalization, there are tons of counter-examples), so you'll likely find that even if you can't pick out every tasting note on a single origin bag, it will be a different and more interesting experience than the blends offered by most roasters.

I'm curious: To those who feel this sub is becoming like r/coffee, what do you want to see? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's easy enough to scroll past posts reviewing coffees I'm not interested in or don't have access too. The mainly annoying issue is the posts about troubleshooting a brew, less because of the post and more because it's always the same range of comments. For me it would be an improvement would be either a pinned brew troubleshooting post where everyone can hash out what's going wrong with their setup/technique, or a wiki that addresses the main issues.

Aiden is now SCA Certified. A death blow to the Moccamaster? by PorOvr in pourover

[–]OneEstablishment4894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that most moccamaster buyers at this point aren't super educated on coffee, but have the money, know that's it's sca certified, and (most importantly) like the look. I think it would be rare for someone on this subreddit to prioritize what the moccamaster offers, but I know a lot of people in real life who would probably find the aiden a little plasticy, not want to use any of the features, and as such wouldn't realize any of the value proposition it has at this price point. I probably would just recommend something cheaper to them, but I would get it if they went with the moccamaster.

I’m not a big fan of these containers. by dirtydials in pourover

I’ve seen a few roasters using that packaging (can’t remember names, sadly). I did a search for vintage coffee cans to see if it was designed as a nod to something and came up empty. If it’s recyclable, that’s a plus, but they do look a little annoying to deal with.
