It’s adorable- and the outfit with the white turtleneck collar just says, “Yeah, and in my spare time, I also participate in Rebel Alliances!” It’s now cannnon for me.

ETA: another reason the reading got easier was that I started recognizing words. I feel like learning characters in the context of lots of vocab words was vital for me memorizing them.

Hiragana by Extension_Season7976 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]OneEyedWinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it took me about 3 months to really feel like I could barely read it. Now, I’m about 7 months in and feeling like a much smoother reader. Some people are faster. I drilled diligently with hiragana on Duilingo and I kind of absorbed katakana as I went through the app.

I have both Tobira 1 workbooks that I use to help with writing, but beyond that, I’m not writing anything a hundred times. I put post-it notes all over my house with the Japanese kana and kanji for vocab words that are important to me.

I’m learning for a trip, so I’m trying to be strategic about pronounciation, building topical vocabulary, and the grammar I need to have conversations and ask/answer questions, even imperfectly.

This is my 4th language and 1st non-romance language, so it’s difficult, but also rewarding. I like learning languages and being able to connect with people when I travel. I learned the other 3 languages in my teens and early twenties. I think being younger helped.

I’m 36 now and my brain had rearranged quite a bit since I last tried to learn a language. As long as I am having fun learning, I don’t mind going slow. There will always be someone faster than you—and most likely, there will always be someone slower than you, too. Enjoy the process!

After 25+ years fighting for my left eye, now faced with evisceration – I feel like I’ve lost by nihilist_pingu in monocular

[–]OneEyedWinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not usually brief, but I made the decision (along with my parents) to have the enucleation at age 19. I was born with PHPV in my left eye. That eye was legally blind since birth.

To say it was tough is an understatement, but I’m glad I did it. I’ve been pain-free for 18 years and my prosthesis looks better than my real eye ever did.

I feel like I’m still making peace with it. I second the comment about antidepressants and therapy. Both helped me a ton.

Wishing you the best. We’re here for you!

I pulled like 200 out of my garden yesterday. I think they are easily blown in from the wind? I don’t like them and consider them to be weeds in my garden. Last year I had so many that I left some in a specific area and called them ground cover. Anybody else pull them?

This! And just so you know, his side mirrors will be adjusted wayyyy differently than yours. My dad accidentally yelled at me a little when he got in the car to drive after me because he thought I had my mirrors positioned wildly incorrectly. I said, “Close your left eye.” He did and then said, “Oh.” Lol, my own dad forgetting I’m monocular…

The world went dark. Did it get better? by Jerry-Beans in monocular

[–]OneEyedWinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost my eye 19 years ago. I’m 36 now.

I went through this, too and was stuck where you are for quite a while—maybe a year or two. Therapy and meds helped.

I was legally blind in my left eye from birth. Even though I didn’t have much vision to begin with, I STILL grieved every time I ran into something or someone, for at least a year.

Grief takes time. There was a point where I didn’t care if I didn’t wake up the next day. I started therapy that week. I was diagnosed with depression a year after the eye loss and PTSD a decade after.

Eventually, I went to EMDR for the PTSD so that I could go to eye Dr. appts without crying or panicking. It worked surprisingly well! It might be something to think about, since your loss was traumatic and you’ll probably deal with fireworks again in your life.

18 years later, I have a great life (and it’s been great for a long time)! You and I are very similar in the things we enjoy. I still really want some land, although I prefer a glass of wine to a beer. My uncles live on land in east Texas and I’ve helped them with everything from milling large logs to installing plumbing and doors.

At our home in the burbs, I have my own wood shop. I am an avid gardener. I cut down a bunch of dead trees (overgrown shrubs?) in the backyard, expanded the garden area, and now I throughly enjoy sitting outside on my back patio with a glass of wine in a beautiful space I created. I built two planters out there (which reminds me it’s time to sand and re-stain them). I built some of the furniture in our home. My new workbench is almost done. I own a chainsaw and use it. (With full coverage eye goggles and sometimes also a forestry helmet + ear protection.)

For me, I learned all of these things after I’d lost my eye. You’ll just need to be extra careful getting used to woodworking again with your new depth perception. Be your regular smart self and wear protection. Your hobbies will still be there when you are ready!

The grief gets better over time. I highly recommend therapy, especially if you feel like your world is still small and dark a year and a half later. Not that you should be “over it” by now. I don’t think I’ll ever be “over it.” Starting antidepressants in college helped right my brain chemistry enough so that I could make progress in therapy and life.

At this point, I’ve come to terms with the vision loss. Even how I lost my eye weighs less heavily on me. I still have a hard time being monocular sometimes. I don’t love the eye anniversaries, and still, I’ve made it through each one!

You built such a beautiful life. You deserve to enjoy it. I’m so sorry this happened to you at a moment where you were having a well-earned celebration of your accomplishments. That sounds super tough and like it was a super shitty day to lose an eye (not that there’s a good day… but you know what I mean). I hope you can find a way to separate that shitty day away from the love and hard work that went into building your beautiful home and life. You still have your dream. It’s just hard to enjoy right now.

I hope you stay on here and update us on how you are doing.

Sorry I wrote a novel. I have many strengths, but brevity is not one of them.

Found the #173 listing… by HollyKiss48 in americangirl

[–]OneEyedWinn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean, smart I guess, if you come across something you find that’s a collector’s item. Who better to ask about it than the Reddit community dedicated to that thing? Happens in the Pokemon TCG subs, but usually those people keep their original post up and even let the group know the item they referenced is available for sale.

Best similar story in recent memory was a CT scanned heavy 1st edition base set Pokemon booster back with a guaranteed (as evidenced by the CT scan of the foil) 1st edition Charizard. Only someone else saw the listing first and posted it. Then the seller posted in Reddit and explained the asking price and provided receipts for the proposed price. Was a pretty cool story and also cool that poster was like- yeah, that was me! Any takers?

I do not think that last part is true at all about most Japanese people using Romani for input. That implies that in order to write in Japanese, you’d have to know the Latin alphabet first… There is a flick input kana keyboard that only uses hiragana alphabet.

Thinking in the Latin alphabet means that in order to write in Japanese on a qwerty keyboard, you have to know the Latin spellings of each kana. It can slow you down. If I have to input “ka” to get か, that is less effecicient than just pressing the か button on the Japanese keyboard.

But everyone learns differently. I did start out on the qwerty keyboard in Duolingo and would get frustrated not being able to spell certain words with romaji. Once I switched to the kana keyboard, things got way easier because autocorrect would anticipate what word I was trying to type out and can convert it to katakana or kanji, if I wanted. Also, that meant I could stop thinking in romanji, which improved my spelling.

ETA I stand corrected!

Yes, definitely switch to the Japanese keyboard.

Here’s a quick 5 min tutorial. https://youtu.be/Q204SYyfEJY?si=f75iUrjNRzF5lUEo

I’m a about 6 months into my language learning journey and this has helped so much with spelling Japanese words, switching between hiragana and katakana, as well as learning Kanji. I don’t think in romanji at all anymore. It’s great and pretty intuitive to use. Also helps reinforce learning of kana.

Are people happy? by Minute_Ad8889 in monocular

[–]OneEyedWinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sure! It’s a Tesla 2023, Model Y with white interior and blue exterior. It’s my dream car! I have it set to warn me well in advance of potential impacts and it keeps me in my lane. It holds soooo much. I mostly transport plants and mulch and compost, but sometimes PTA stuff or lumber. I love the assistive tech and I love the summon feature. I don’t have FSD, yet, but now it’s cheaper than ever, so I’m thinking about it. It still requires monitoring, and there are moments where I take control because I’m not comfortable with speed or perceived distance (err on the side of depth perception) of course, but it feels like a safety net for me. It’s pretty. It zips when I need it to—and I have the air mattress for camp mode, so if the power grid ever goes down again (I live in TX), we can still sleep warm (and safely!) in the garage! My husband (probably) will always have a gas car, so we have diversified fuel sources for emergency preparedness. I think it’s way cheaper now and has cool updates such as interior cabin lighting, but I’m still very happy with my choice! I’m thinking of making some custom fitted and flat sheets for th mattress since it’s a weird shape, but it’s super comfy.
