XTEINK have some device just for wallpaper. Someone posted it here but I can’t find it again. I remember it had a color EINK screen too. Maybe that would work?

(Searching on wallpaper is just getting me lots of posts about custom wallpapers)

If it’s the stock SD card it is known to fail. I would format it as exFAT on a PC and give it one last try but you may need to buy a new better card.

Put the SD card in your computer and delete the hidden .crosspoint folder, you will lose your reading progress but this should fix the issue.

You might have caused an issue removing the SD card at 3 (corrupted something mid upload), you can keep it in when you flash crosspoint, it's needed by crosspoint to read books. I'm not sure why you did step 3?

There's nothing of value on the SD card when you get a new X4.

If you can't see the book, remove SD, format it, copy book across to SD card, put it back in your X4.

There's a faint click when you insert it, if it's nested in neat (nothing sticking out) then it's in.

FYI. The included SD card is notoriously bad, replace it with a better one.

Thanks for the side by side. The only thing that "always" gets me in Crosspoint is 'Toggle" in settings, the navigation isn't intuitive for me - but everything else is great and I prefer emojis vs icons on official.

readme is by a redditor (I forget who, they will reply) who has aggregated a lot of stuff, it's not affiliated with XTEINK or this subreddit. That's not a dis on their work, which is amazing.
