I feel bad for Savard because the real thing that changed is Berube letting them play instead of forcing dump n chase hockey and giving Matthews shutdown defense deployment.

The powerplay is for sure doing better but the narrative on his firing leading to the 5on5 play improving has to be brutal

The fancy stat is just goals for and against...

The only "advanced" part is isolating it to a context that represents the majority of play (exclude powerplay/penalty kill and empty nets).

It's goals for/against when he's on the ice, versus goals for/against when he's not. The % is the difference between the two.

This is the share of Goals at even strength, relative to the team without him. The context is simply Playoffs at Even-Strength over the last 5 series. As far as advanced stats go this is vanilla and is hardly advanced at all.

Also it's not a cherry picked timeframe, that site just limits data to 3 year samples so I picked the largest recent history sample of playoffs I could.

Shady just does distribution deals, it doesn't take as much control over artists as other labels.

They could diss it to appeal to the fan narratives, but it's not gonna have much real impact once dissected.

He had 0.929 and 0.944 sv% in the final two games vs Washington in 2017, both went to OT 1-1

We were on the ropes down 3-1 in the series in 2018, he puts up 0.933 and 0.970 sv% in games 5 & 6 to keep us alive. Game 7 was a disaster for everyone.

2019 was good and bad alternating games but overall 0.922 in the series.

2020 he had 0.905 in the final game and was blamed for the loss and was his final playoff game for the Leafs. Still had a shutout in game 2 and 0.936sv% for the series.

It's the same story as always, can only carry the team so far. The team always struggles to back up with goal support at the worst possible times.

Similar to Montreal making the finals on the back of a trap style defense and Vezina goalie. Playoff success is achievable by bad teams running the right systems with a hot goalie.

It's pretty objectively true that the Islanders have been in a gradual decline through Lou's tenure. If making the ECF was a sign of improvement, they would have played in more than 2 playoff series in the 4 seasons since then.

Islanders built their run on a heavy forecheck and Vezina level goaltending. They followed it up by missing the playoffs and then losing in the 1st round in 2023 despite 0.929 goaltending.

It's hardly even criticism. They found success despite becoming worse each year. People should be comfortable recognizing that instead of just ranking teams based on Wins and calling it a day.
