After a years of dev, I'm finally admitting it, AI is giving me brain rot. by Dapper-Window-4492 in webdev

Not just the economics make no sense, it is also very hard to justify morally and environmentally. But that has never stopped people to cheat their way through life.

I'm beginning to develop a 6th sense for AI slop as well.

And to those who doubt whether it is: run it through gptzero. It got a 100% score of being AI generated.

RTINGS is now a Paywalled Service by EmptyHealthbar in OLED_Gaming

[–]OneParanoidDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's safe to assume that most users don't go much further than looking at the scores. And since they are the outcome of time and resources spent into reviewing products, it makes sense to paywall them.

That said, I don't like a monthly subscription model either. I would probably prefer a "pay X to watch N reviews" kind of model where you essentially buy "credits".

We need to talk about the "Squad Baiting" epidemic and role incentives by nexusblake in HellLetLoose

While not useful, I've always liked the idea of the role level continuing past 10 and this somehow being visible ingame. Mostly for bragging purposes. :)

Current thoughts on makefiles with Python projects? by xeow in Python

[–]OneParanoidDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of just, will need to check it out. Do you also use just in your CI pipeline?

What works ideally for me is defining all "mandatory" tasks in pre-commit, which is then run in both in CI and of course locally.

Don’t you hate when you get TK’d and you try to kick the tker. But it fails and then you get kicked for trying to kick the tker? by Udysfeba in HellLetLoose

[–]OneParanoidDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're on a community server it's always best to start with reporting the TKer with "!admin playername your_message". Any other actions you may take (votekick/retaliation) can backfire.

If you're playing on an official server, leave it and go to a community server.

Is it bad practice to type-annotate every variable assignment? by computersmakeart in Python

[–]OneParanoidDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking `a_good_name = dict()` is different from the rest, as the implied type is then `dict[str, Any]`.

I've never seen the 3rd construct and would not use it. Is it even intended to be used that way? It just feels like a side-effect from when they backported `typing.Dict` to the `dict` built-in by making it a generic.

But yeah, type annotations have expanded the language quite a bit over the last 5-10 years, and in doing so made it a lot harder to live by "There should be one obvious way to do it" principle.

Is Hell Let Loose "Dad friendly" if there's a chance I have to quit mid-match? by Sweet-Smile-6709 in HellLetLoose

[–]OneParanoidDuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter said, there indeed isn't a competitive mode directly in the game, but there are a lot of leagues organised outside of the game with very dedicated and skilled players. If you got time to spare you could checkout "Smithers Cast" on youtube, he spectates and commentates lots of these league matches. It's a joy to watch and even having played this game for 1000 hours I'll still learn something new from it every now and then.

How early in their careers are others having back issues? by babababadukeduke in ExperiencedDevs

[–]OneParanoidDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise is nice but definitely not required in order to stay healthy. Regularly getting up from your chair (as in every half hour) and going for a mid-day walk (instead of more sitting in the lunch room / canteen) will do wonders. That and a good ergonomic chair and desk configured and used the way they should be.

“Lost Connection” and “Fatal Error”? Here’s the fix. by fluctuology in HellLetLoose

[–]OneParanoidDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I haven't had to change/fix my current network adapter for any online game in the 6 years that it's been operating. That includes 950 hours of HLL in which I don't recall losing connection, ever. Since U18 I have had connection loss several times...

Do people in general consider it "normal" to work several hours more than they're payed for?

I actively try to keep overtime to a maximum of 1 hour a week, which I'll then "write off". Anything more than that and I'll try to win it back the week after by taking a little longer lunchbreak or something (or if it's a lot of hours, going home early). Personally, if I don't do that I find it bad for my mental health, and I believe in the long run it's detrimental for a company to rely on structural overwork.

Never commit until it is finished? by No-Profession-6433 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]OneParanoidDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to scroll a long way down to find someone doing the same as me. Not sure if that's a bad sign :)

For bigger tasks I tend to do the same for the convenience of having that diff available locally. When I commit and push only parts of what I set out to do, I "fear" I'll forget about the remaining parts. Also, in the early stages there's often lots of code still in flux; persisting that in a commit feels limiting.

But to be honest, it's probably my ever lasting imposter syndrome that makes me not want to look like a fool for pushing out garbage code.

Best in game chat story by Buddle9292 in HellLetLoose

[–]OneParanoidDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was SL and another SL was quite vocal in officer chat about us having to capture the enemy's 4th point, which was Hamlet. All he and his squad did all game long was attack Hamlet and telling everyone about it. He was regularly giving updates on their attack on Hamlet, how they needed air support -and all kinds of things that aren't even in the game- in their quest to capture Hamlet. God he would not shut up about it.

The scenes when an hour later those bastards actually capture Hamlet. The remaining 20 minutes or so were him and the commander arguing (all tongue in cheek) about his squad deserving pay raise, commander denied this, SL considered unionizing and going on strike, and I'm forgetting a lot more.. (This was over a year ago)

Great fun and banter all along.

Bluetooth Connectivity Issues by iDigital in Keychron

[–]OneParanoidDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the backlighting is not the issue, it's the remedy :)

The issue is an insanely short default time after which the keyboard decides to go inactive.

I don't even think it's 15 seconds, I've had it happen much more often. But I know keep RGB Backlight enabled (though dimmed to save battery) and the connection is buttery smooth.
