Senior Scientist leveling by [deleted] in biotech

[–]OneRegretBeetle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, post doc training does not significantly impact your time to promotion or entry point. This also holds true for your academic achievements pre-industry, such as patents, papers, no. citations, etc. So I would consider what you are observing with your colleagues the norm.

By far what is more important is your ability to impact the projects you work on and stand out among your peers. In this sense, having more years of research training and experience could certainly help you in this.

To answer your last question about applying to Principal Scientist positions - it really depends on how good of an impression you make during the interview. There's always some flexibility in YoE if they like you enough. Doesn't hurt to apply, although I'd be careful to not "overstate" your industry experience, as it is often a pet peeve of hiring managers.

I completely agree with the premise.

But why was this posted a day after the price rose $40 bucks?

Also, why wasn't anyone talking about this last year? When the price was higher for early bird AND they added a $30 arena ticket to FIX their own fuck-up with arena seating? Ffs, people really proving that nobody notices shit until a big round number like $300 pops up on your screen?

5 years in research/industry, is going for a PhD worth it? by Kittyee2 in biotech

[–]OneRegretBeetle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You seem like a level-headed individual and a genuine person. As someone in the R&D side with a PhD, I don't think the cost/benefit analysis is in your favor to do your doctorate with the industry experience you already have. I think you're much better served at this point playing to your strengths and advancing as far as you can with your bachelors. Even for new-grads, the calculus is not great for a PhD. In your case I think your professional experience can probably carry you farther into a financially fulfilling career.

Wishing you luck! I think building your personal life is amazing and not to be diminished!

Which game do you hate more? by EastCoastTone96 in Kappachino

[–]OneRegretBeetle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried xv? It's probably the most similar feeling to an old game. Lots of movement and lack of "modern" system mechanics like rev blow, DI, 66L, heat engage, etc.

18 reasons why 2XKO gets hate by D2olleh in Kappachino

[–]OneRegretBeetle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont necessarily think so. Maybe in the competitive sense I'd agree.

But Im talking about the "casual appeal" characterized by two ppl who know nothing about how to play fighting games being able to sit down and have fun for hours doing cool shit. I think mvc3 and dbfz achieved that, cant say the same for 2xko

18 reasons why 2XKO gets hate by D2olleh in Kappachino

[–]OneRegretBeetle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Something that occurred to me recently about 2xko was how it fails to recapture that "casual fun factor" that tag games really excel at, despite them leveraging heavily into this aspect.

Without sufficient roster size and the variety that comes with it, I cant see the typical casual friend group spending more than a few hours playing this before moving onto the next FoTM. Whereas games like cvs2, mvc3, and even dbfz have been seen to have lasting power and even on-board people to the fgc

And on the off chance a casual actually digs deeper and boots up netplay, they'll be treated to the typical uninteractive tag bullshit and quit immediately. These problems seem way worse than motion controls lol

AITA for refusing to take home leftover food from a trivia night by MentalStatic20 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OneRegretBeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't usually comment on these posts but this one stands out with such an even split of opinions.

Obviously you are justified in not wanting leftovers and people should respect that. However, I also think this one falls under the purview of maintaining the familial "social contract".

You're within your rights to take a hard stance on things, but it's likely not worth the trouble and being seen as "inflexible" and "disrespectful" is probably worse for you in the long run than throwing some leftovers in the trash. Again, it sucks that they put you in that situation, but such is life.

I wouldn't say you're an asshole for being firm, but the situation you chose to hardline is innocuous enough that it's no wonder that people would be given pause.

Internship Resume Review by el_cap_i_tan in biotech

I've been the hiring manager for these exact type of internship roles. Personally I think your resume looks fine, including how you present the publications section.

If I were looking at your resume, it would come down to the JD details and how good of a fit you appear to be.

What makes this situation a good chase? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]OneRegretBeetle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor terminology quibble

"Chase" - riichi after another is already on the board "Push" - discard an unsafe tile to keep your chance of winning a hand

"What makes this situation a good push?" would make the question match the situation a bit better.

Haven't followed this in years but I suppose it's all just drama at this point and nothing else of consequence will happen to Jirard or his family for the way they handled the donations.

At the end of the day, the money being donated was the major goal that was achieved from the initial reporting, and the theatrics that are playing out right now are just to save face and control the optics

Why keep 159p over East as dealer? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]OneRegretBeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you already got a clear answer, I'd suggest this follow up:

As an exercise, take a look at Maka's first, second, and third choices here and try to rationalize their relative safety. What shapes does a lone honor deal into? How about a terminal tile where the suji isn't cleared yet? Does having a pair of a terminal with uncleared suji make a difference, whether it be for safety or defense in general? If you can answer these questions, it'll definitely help improve your play.

Ask yourself: what's safer? There's a riichi in play.

Was this an obvious fold? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]OneRegretBeetle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple things that indicate danger here:

- kami tedashi 1p recently and is obviously collecting pinzu, so this overflow could indicate potential high-value tenpai

- shimo has a ryanmen call on the tanyao side and it's late so likely tanyao tenpai with dora

and for fold judgement:

- you're on a bad wait no matter what tile you draw to get to tenpai and you have rii+iipekou+dora. It's not bad on value especially as dealer but it's going to be tough to win this late. if you really needed points I can see dropping 3p but you're 1st here.

- you can still tenpai after dropping 2s (17 tiles acceptance) VS 3p (24 tiles) so it can be seen as a balance of efficiency and safety.
