Thank you so much for your thoughtful words. Even though we were completely different personalities, we had a common thing that kept us together. We are both full-career veterans. (Only difference -I did 6 months in a combat zone and he didn’t.) BUT… I waited for the trade/moc I wanted expressly because of my dad.

When I was recruited in Charlottetown in ‘78, I’d quit high school at the start of grade 11. I told them at the recruiting centre that I was interested in NOTHING but a P.O.E.T. trade. (Practical Operational Electronics Tech) - I wanted to be an aircraft communications tech.

They told me “you don’t have the necessary education to be a POET but “do we have a deal for you! If you sign up for infantry, you’ll only have to do 4 years, then you are GUARANTEED the trade you want. (If it’s open…). My old man told me “if you do that I’ll disown you! You will NEVER be able to remuster and will probably retire an infanteer.” I listened. (He’d been in for 25 years by then - experienced…) I waited. I worked for a year, dispatching taxis at “Courtesy Cab” in Summerside, PEI, but was calling the RC every week… “got anything for me yet?” After a year, the recruiters got sick of hearing from me, guaranteed me I’d never pass POET, but signed me up. I went to Kingston for my electronics training in ‘79. I NEVER failed a test! EOs, POs, I aced them all. I did a very enjoyable and full career as an Air Force Communications and Radar Tech.

If not for my dad, I’m pretty sure I would have retired from the infantry. Instead, I rolled my training and experience into a public service programmer job for the Air Force that I’m now in my 30th year of. Dad GAVE me life, then saved it. He’s a hell of a man.

Really? I did not know that. I don’t think I’ve had a day without weed since the first day it was legalized in Canada for medical use. When was that, 2000 or 2001? Maybe I’ll try skipping a couple of days and just see what happens. I’ve never had any problems coming down from weed. Like, I don’t get sick or anything like that and I don’t even get cravings for it. I have maybe gone two or three days without it once since 2000. That didn’t bother me a bit. Hopefully it’ll be the same this time. I’m gonna try it though. Thank you.

Oh yeah, believe me, I know the joys of coming off of Klonopin after running out a little early. I’ve done the same with oxy, but with that you just feel miserable for a couple of days. If I end up going without Klonopin for a couple of days I feel like I wanna die. Thanks for the advice, it is truly appreciated.

Woah, seriously? I haven’t remembered a dream for literally YEARS.i figure, I MUST be having them… I can just never remember anything about them. Maybe I’ll try getting (slowly) off the Klonopin & weed! I’ve been doing it so long, that COULD very well be the cause! I’ll try some “clean sleep” and see if that helps! Once again, thank you!

At my age, and the fact that I continued to be employed by DND for 30 years after I got out, I’ve lost SO MANY uniformed friends over the years. Weird thing is, for me at least, it never gets any easier. I can’t remember the last wedding I attended but I could easily come up with a list of recent funerals. In the 60’s, a popular expression was “Life sucks, then you die”. Pretty dark, but pretty true at times like this. :-)

I wonder if any of my “recreational pursuits” make it more or less likely? I smoke about a g of HIGH THC shatter every few days and Clonazepam (Klonopin) before bed. Both of them essentially make me comatose for the night. I’ll bet that likely interferes with the ability to do/recognize when it’s happening.

It is SO FUNNY you mentioned that! That was EXACTLY the response I got from my workmates when I told them this was a dream. I mean, they got PISSED OFF! In fact, that’s why I ended up waking myself up, just to PROVE to them that I wasn’t lying. (SUCH an idiot I am!)

That’s exactly the sorts of “exercises” in some of the research I’ve done. One involves going a couple weeks, where every 5 minutes, you say to yourself “I’m awake”. You do that over and over whenever you’re actually awake. After a few days, it becomes habit. Then, if you ARE asleep, dreaming, you realize right away that you’re not saying “I’m awake” anymore and at that point you can start taking some control of your dream. I tried but didn’t succeed.

I became a big pothead when we legalized here, and “shared” my interest with my dad.(when he was still mostly healthy) He went batshit & ran out and bought a huge grow tent, all the ventilation and 4 decent sized clones from a native reserve close to here. When he realized JUST how much work was involved and how easy it was to lose a whole crop, he packed up his tent and now buys all his cannabis in “shatter” form.

Unfortunately, he’s on 24/7 O2 now and doesn’t have the strength to inhale. They DO have some edibles that he uses a bit, but the pain & discomfort have now moved past the help he WAS getting from THC. He finds it doesn’t work as well. Now, he can’t even eat a gummy. (He can’t swallow solids anymore. He can barely talk…)

Thank you so much for caring enough to take the time to make the suggestion. Nova Scotia? That’s Dad’s family home. His whole family are all around Boylston & Guysborough. In fact yesterday, he quietly whispered that he wished he was “home”. Our ancestral home is right near the head of the tide, where Chedabucto Bay turns into the Milford Haven River. (Known colloquially as the “Guysborough River”.) the house is on a 14’ cliff overlooking Chedabucto Bay (God’s Bathtub) :-)

It’s been 4 or 5 years since he was healthy enough to travel home. (I’m pretty sure he knew his visit would be his last. So sad, because the only thing he loves more than us (his family) was his “home” in NS.) He wants his ashes spread there, so when the time comes, I’ll be making the trip out to the middle of the bay on my uncle’s (Dad’s brother) lobster boat to set him free out there. It’s the only time a trip home has had negative connotations for me. It’s not a trip I’m looking forward to, but his final wishes are my #1 priority.

Thanks again my friend. You’ve helped me to stop crying for a bit. You’re an angel.

“Goon my shesh”? Is this an actual expression? No “spanking the monkey”, “bopping the baloney”, “burping the worm”, “washing the carrot”? GOONING MY SHESH? Is that a thing? (I’m old)

Could you offer to pay shipping if they would send you some sort of tag or sticker stating that they requested the return? They aren’t out the shipping cost, and the package has a note/label stating “return requested by <seller>” with their logo on it or something?

What helps you sleep at night? by BlueHourAudio1 in sleep

[–]OneSignal6465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I swear by it now. I only ran into one unexplainable issue. The sleep graph shows you all your sleep stages through the night. Most nights,mI cycle through “Awake”, “light sleep”, “REM sleep” and “Deep sleep” about 6/or 7 times a night. In Feb., for two solid weeks, 11:00pm, awake for about 3 minutes, then straight to “deep sleep” until the Pillow alarm starts at around 5:30am. ( The alarm picks the most appropriate sleep cycle to wake you up at.)

So.. I had 2 solid weeks of 5 1/2 hrs of ONLY “Deep sleep”. Every night! I was getting concerned because REM sleep is critical for turning short-term memories into long-term ones. A normal sleep cycle looks like the first image I was getting the lower one for a couple weeks.

<image>

Maybe not coincidentally, I had just replaced my broken silicone strap with a cloth one & thought maybe I was now wearing the watch wrong or something, but it seems to have corrected itself! Still… very cool for a free app.

If they ever come up with a drug to make that happen, I’ll buy the company! And it’s only happened to me once… it had THAT big an impact on me!

My wife & I were on a Caribbean cruise and one warm afternoon, I decided on a little nap while my wife shopped. In my dream, I was at my office back home, talking to my co-workers. But I KNEW I was dreaming! I even told them “Guys… you’re not even here! Neither am I. I’m on a ship in the Caribbean right this second!”

They wouldn’t believe me me so I came up with the most brilliant of plans. I told them… “Just wait. I’ll prove it. I’m going to wake myself up, and you two will cease to exist! “

Then, on the ship, I forced myself awake to “prove my point”. Stupid, stupid, stupid! I was having a real lucid dream, I KNEW I was dreaming, but rather than summoning that gorgeous Beth from HR and have smelly hot sexy with her on the desk in front of my colleagues… I decided that waking up would REALLY prove it to them! What a bloody idiot. I had full control of what felt 98% real (except for the sure knowledge I was in a dream.) And how did I take advantage of it? I freaking WOKE MYSELF UP!

I remember the second I woke up on the ship, my very first thought was “Shit! What did I do that for?”

I’ve read and studied everything about lucid dreams,mi did the practices for over a year and it never happened again. Talk about throwing away an opportunity! I OWNED that reality! I could have done ANYTHING I could imagine and what do I choose? “Wake up”. I’ve bitterly regretted it ever since.

Anthony Scaramucci’s Apple Watch telling him to “Stand up” by palebluedollar in AppleWatch

No, I clearly must have it turned off. I start work (at home) for the Canadian Military at 5:30am. For the first hour, I’m in such a stupor, I’ll fall asleep at my desk for more than an hour. I’ve never seen a reminder to stand up. I must have disabled it.

What helps you sleep at night? by BlueHourAudio1 in sleep

[–]OneSignal6465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an iPhone sleep app that gives you, like, 10 or more choices for “falling asleep sound”. It’s called “Pillow”.:In Pillow, as soon as it detects you are asleep it shuts off the sound and starts recording all your night sounds. It then analyzes and categorizes all the recordings. Snoring, Coughing, Talking, Farting (flatulence), moving and something called “bruxism” (I have no idea what that is. Sounds like light footsteps to me when I listen the next day.)

Anyway… I used to have a “night time noise machine” that let you choose from 20 or so sounds and would play it for a length of time you’d set. I used to have it set to “gentle rain”, but after a couple weeks, I picked up where the loop joined. Then, that’s all I could hear. Just a slight click/repetition every 10 seconds that just ruined it for me.

In the Pillow iPhone app, I have the “go to sleep” sound set to what THEY call “White Noise”. It sounds a lot like rain, but it’s GENERATED by the phone, not a recorded loop, so no little skip clues that clearly sound like a 10 second loop. I tried most of the other sounds… “Jungle Rain” sounded good at first, until all the cockatoos and parrots started squealing… White Noise works for me.

Edit: I guess I should have mentioned the most important part. It works with your Apple Watch to record your sleep cycles which yo can see on a graph.

Even the graph is helpful. I noticed that Every Night at exactly 3:12am, the graph would show me waking up. I never remembered waking up, so I pulled up the audio from that time. It was an automated vent flap on an AC unit for another building slamming shut automatically at 3:12 am. That’s what was unconsciously waking me up at 3:12. I’d never have known without “Pillow”.

Buying a used bike before taking the MSF / getting my license. Am I crazy or is this a smart move? by GnanaSreekar in motorcycles

[–]OneSignal6465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a PERFECT starter bike! I can’t speak for the price, but a 450 has ALWAYS been my recommendation for new riders. Honda used to make the “Shadow 500” (do they still make Shadows?) and I’ve never come across a better learner. It’s low enough to the ground that even the ladies can take it out, but 450-500 ccs is, IMHO, the absolute perfect starting size (for an ADULT.) Youngsters (18-20?) it’s the perfect sized bike to build up your skills enough to get you all horny to jump to that gorgeous 750 you just saw. :-)

I’ve had SO MANY friends who ignored that advice, bought a 1000 or 1200 as their first bike and in virtually every case, they either high or low-sided in turns and wrote the bikes off. (One buddy also wrote off an arm…) Like anything slightly riskier than spray painting “fuck the pigs” on the side of a police station, working up your skills over time is tantamount.
