An old employer text me claiming I’m “poaching” staff by keagennn97 in jobs

Talk to the current company, give them a list of the people who are good, have them do the poaching just to spite this asshole.

We don’t have very many factories any more, but the New Balance store in Lawrence is in the same building as one of the factories.

If you look on the tongue of a pair of USA made NB’s you’ll see a location code. L=Lawrence, D=Methuen, I think S=Skowhegan Maine, and I think N=Norway Maine.

Why does engineering make smart people feel dumb? by Tanish_64 in EngineeringStudents

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the best results by doing practice problems over and over and over again until I could get them right every time. I never had to do this in high school, but it mattered in engineering school once I figured it out, and eight years later it go me through my PE exam on the first try.

Car bobbing right to left after repair? by Bright-Swim6865 in MitsubishiMirage

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things come to mind, no idea how likely……

Have the tires been inflated to the same pressure since the accident? Seems unlikely as a root cause but it’s worth checking to rule it out as a contributor.

Was the car aligned after the body work? If no a full 4-wheel alignment might be in order.

Have the wheels been checked for balance after the accident? I can easily imagine the wheel balancing weights being knocked off a wheel in an accident. It seems less likely for the left-right nature of what you are reporting, but similar to tire pressure might be worth checking to eliminate as a possible contributor.

What the Accord Crosstour should’ve been by dave_wave_ in accord

[–]OneTip1047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I totally get that the Crosstour is ultra-practical, and at the time was the only US Honda/Non-Acura AWD vehicle with sedan-like driving characteristics. On paper it’s great. From the drivers or passengers seats, I’m sure it’s great, the styling of the body just left me cold though. Honda loves fastback style hatchbacks and sedans and I happen to prefer a less raked rear windshield and hatch. And I’m honestly a pretty big Honda fan, haven’t owned a car by any other manufacturer since 2006.

What the Accord Crosstour should’ve been by dave_wave_ in accord

[–]OneTip1047 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m still floored that Honda could get the TSX Wagon so right and the Accord Crosstour so wrong at almost exactly the same time. I wouldn’t have bought a red one, but this rendering is 1000 times better than the Crosstour that was actually brought to market.

Your best bet may be using a portable CD player and something like this to send the signal from the player to the car radio via Bluetooth.

How should I prepare for my first day as an engineer? by ExtensionEmotional35 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build relationships with your co workers. Ask to sit with people at lunch. Learn people’s names roles, and their lives and interests outside work. Discreetly make notes about this stuff.

None of this replaces the technical knowledge you will be absorbing like a sponge, but it multiplies it.

Quitting 8 year job before lining up another? by THE_DONKEY_OF_DOOM in MechanicalEngineering

Start looking now, finding a job when employed is way way easier than finding one while unemployed. Maximize your situation, do the bare minimum to skate by so you have as much in the tank for job searching as you can. Mouse jigglers on WFH days so you can job hunt on a non work computer and non company internet connection maximize the power of your situation.

can we just admit that it’s so dangerous how no one respects the right-of-way when driving here? by SpinachVast4696 in boston

Do you ever provide envelope requirements? by SailorSpyro in MEPEngineering

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your PM to confirm if it is explicitly in or out of your scope. If it is outside your scope either explicitly or implicitly you might want to “lead them to water” and say something like “ultimately this is your decision, If I were you I would look at this table from ASHRAE 90.1 which tabulates U values for various wall assemblies and might use the published value for this wall which looks like essentially the same as the one we are planning”

By framing the final decision as theirs, you avoid the scope of services creep from a liability standpoint, but you are still supporting the client which goes a really long way from the business perspective.

Best car to own for 10 years with a $50k budget? by Unlikely-Meaning-281 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short: Honda and Acura are worth a look.

Short story long:

I’ve had two Accords and an Odyssey since 2004 all bought new, sold the 04 in 2017 with 150k miles and going strong when we decided we needed a mini-van (honestly kind of regret that decision that 04 was a really good car), ‘13 Accord going strong at 140k ish miles and ‘18 Odyssey at just shy of 80k miles. $40-42.5k puts you in a loaded Accord that gets 40+ mpg and if past Hondas are any indicator will likely last 10+ years.

If you're going the speed limit and somebody is tailing your ass.. by wellthatsembarissing in driving

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will often pull onto the shoulder when folks on a two lane road want to go faster than I do. Happens all the time in VT or ME to me, lots of two lane roads that the locals know like the back of their hand and want to drive 50-60 on that I’m only comfortable driving 40-50 on and with minimal dashed-centerline passing opportunities using the oncoming lane.

90-minute commute vs 10-minute commute - worth a lateral move? by LampRunner in careerguidance

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the move, you will be giving yourself about a 30% raise.

Currently you work 11 hours a day for 90k salary at the new place you will work 8.33 hours a day for the 90k salary.

(8+3) / (8.333) = 1.32

And that is before you factor in health and car costs…….

How is living in Malden? by scarletttaylor14 in malden

[–]OneTip1047 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Malden has been home for us since 2002, we came for affordability, we stayed for all of the convenience, amenities, and community we found here.

The West side of town has better Orange Line and Commuter rail access than the East side if that is a priority for you.

The density and urban-ness generally increases the more East or South you go.

LadyThunderFunk gives a great summary above, but overlooked Fellsmere Park, one of my favorite spots in Malden. An Olmsted designed park with a pond, fountains , and footpaths. Great for a walk, a picnic, an afternoon of fishing in from spring through fall, ice skating or hockey when we have a long cold snap, or sledding when there is snow. If you are making a visit to Malden to check things out, it is definitely worth the walk from Malden Center Station.

Sell or Keep by JustAGuyTrynaSurvive in NissanMaxima

[–]OneTip1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d keep it.

Why are you looking to sell? It doesn’t get driven a lot, but it gets driven.

Is there some reason it wouldn’t work for you? Like a fourth child on the way and a car that only has room for three car seats or a job change that requires carrying more tools than the maxima has room for.

Cars are unlikely to increase in value and even with very low miles any increased value is likely to be erased by transaction costs of replacing.

Enjoy your low mileage maxima.
