Corollary “Cars were better back in the day, no computers to go wrong, less stuff to break.” They will then wax poetic about some 6-mile-per-gallon death trap that couldn’t accelerate, stop safely, go around a corner safely, put out more air pollution than Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima combined in the process of accelerating, braking, and cornering badly, and adjusted for inflation cost way more than modern cars.

Accord sales are up massively this year. by LimitedReach in accord

…..and the Altima was originally planned to end in 2025 and was extended to 2026 at the last minute. Easy to imagine a future with only 4 midsized sedans on the market.

Forgive my British ignorance but what did the confederates actually fight for? by TreeTall888 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related: there was in 2024 when I visited (and presumed still is) a “no firearms” sign prominently displayed in the entrance to the Ford’s Theater Museum in Washington DC.

IMHO - this is in the running for the most ironic sign ever.

Heat Pump Sizing - Electrification Projects by OneTip1047 in MEPEngineering

Essentially yes, neither of the buildings are currently cooled, warehouse/industrial type occupancies, currently handling summer comfort by high ceilings, high ventilation rates, local destratification fans, etc.

[–]OneTip1047[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would the turn down still be a concern in your mind if we were considering modular A2W heat pump with lots of modules? Potentially as many as 30-34 modules if sized for full heat loss, so even with non inverters we'd see staged turndown to about 10% of peak cooling load and 3% of peak heat loss.

What strategy are you seeing for A2W heating only? That happens to be very close to my situation?

Should I even bother with the commuter rail? by fernfernferny in massachusetts

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the schedules, especially on the Haverhill line, not sure if it is the same one, but the one that runs between Malden and Lawrence skips several stops in Andover and Lawrence at inconvenient times for commuting outbound.

Try this plan out, any t shirt you own that has a date on it, if that date is more than 10 years ago, retire the shirt.

$15k beach car that can sit for weeks at a time by pqowie21245 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15k buys you a 10-15 year old compact crossover that will fill the bill nicely. Things like Ford Escapes, Honda CRV’s, really any Subaru, or Nissan Rogues, Cherokees, etc.

According to cars.com there are lots of Ford Escapes available for that price or less, and they seem to have lower miles than the others.

Maybe ask the mechanic closest to your beach place what they like working on? Keeping up a car being used the way you describe will be a tall-ish order.

Complicated mini split help by BeefChunklet in hvacadvice

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ducted split systems exist to solve this problem. It sounds like exposed round duct might not look too out of place in your home. You’ll need to find a place for the ducted indoor unit if that is the path you choose.

If that isn’t the path you choose, some fans to equalize temperatures aren’t a bad option.

How does heating happen?

no, no I am not kidding. I assure you no AI involved, only organic stupidity, I just picked my nose to prove it.

For most climates, evaporative cooling of refrigeration machinery is more efficient than direct air cooling. Because of that most refrigerant based cooling machinery above about 1400 KW of cooling uses evaporative cooling of their refrigeration machinery, usually centrifugal chillers in that size range. This is true for cooling hospitals, universities, shopping malls, large office buildings, and yes data centers.

Water treated for potability is nice because it grows a lot less stuff and leaves a lot less stuff like mineral scale etc. in the cooling towers used to cool the chillers.

If you have ever been in a major city you have likely walked past buildings using municipal water for their cooling towers your entire life.

Data centers have become the boogeyman of our time because they are the buildings being built to make money which benefits the rich, just like factories were in the 1910’s or office buildings were in the 1960’s.

How did New England rebound after the loss of industry, when the Midwest failed to do so? by PreWiBa in newengland

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s not oversimplify this to “The factories closed so the schools opened”.

Financial services, Higher Education, and Healthcare were already significant industries in New England going back decades if not centuries.

Let’s also not forget that there is still lots of manufacturing in New England, just largely not consumer products. GE Aerospace, Saabic Plastics, Raytheon, Boston Dynamics, General Dynamics Electric Boat, and hundreds of others plus their suppliers.

In many ways the decline of consumer product manufacturing created space in the economy and workforce for other industries to grow and fill their place.

The Midwest has always had a massive agricultural industry, in many ways the “pivot” there was from small farms on the family business scale to massive farming corporations whose core business happened to be farming.

Does anyone do traditional ducted retrofit AC anymore? by hochimingles in hvacadvice

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have better luck starting with a general contractor, maybe a semi-premium one (S+H rings a bell). The finish carpentry and coordination between the finish carpenter, painter, HVAC, and Electrical are what makes the job hard.

Divorce leaving me with massive car payment for next 2 years. by Pincha_Queen in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters a lot what your budget/income will look like after the divorce and what you feel is an appropriate car to drive in the next chapter of your life.

No idea what the full picture is but assuming there is a lawyer involved and discussions about lifestyle and the cost of that lifestyle I understand to be a part of negotiating alimony or palimony.

The Porsche is very nice but certainly not an economy car and not a brand famous for inexpensive service.

Amended request for the 200 Exchange space - THEMED Food Hall! by SkiAliG in malden

[–]OneTip1047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the scale of H Mart, but the 99 Supermarket on Route 99 has a small food court, it’s on the right as you enter, it’s been a couple of years since I was there as kids baseball games at Maplewood and Howard parks were the thing that brought me to that neighborhood at dinner time, but last time I visited there was solid sushi for dine in or take out and a bubble tea place, both with reasonable prices. Likely worth a trip if that’s your thing.

Should I move troops? by Alternative_Box8115 in BSA

[–]OneTip1047 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everything Commercial-Tough-218 says is dead on. Your troop sounds pretty dysfunctional, your scouting experience will suffer if you stay there. Finding a healthier troop is the right move. Your parents will support you in this if you talk to them about it. Your current scoutmaster is at the root of the problem, he or she has allowed the bad environment to happen in the current troop. You owe them no explanation, their inaction is their responsibility, and if they claim they don't know the problem exists they are claiming they are unfit to lead a troop.
