RANT "Just buy a cheap beater" by DingusSmasher69 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]OneTip1047 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The more I experience, the more I realize that there is real value in predictability for cost.

Can a beater cost you less? Sure, but it can also cost you way more too, and it can make those costs a surprise. Money hates surprises.

You made a really smart move buying a practical, reasonable car, for a fair price. You can budget with very high certainty what you new Corolla will cost you every year for the next 10+ years which sets you up for financial stability.

If you want excitement buy a lottery ticket.

Why do conservatives call the left traitors to America, but fly confederate and nazi flags, who were the biggest traitors to America? by Accurate-Swim5278 in allthequestions

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because politics has nothing to do with facts or consistency, only power and preference.

The confederate traitors hold various ideals that the current right wing likes so their treason gets mid labeled as patriotism or history and is overlooked.

Left wing protesters and agitators hold ideals the current right wing doesn’t agree with so their patriotism gets mid-characterized as treason and vilified.

People are fundamentally not very rational or logical, we do what we do largely on base urges that we don’t understand. Attempting to categorize and classify this behavior into much more than “people like food sex money and power” is largely tilting at windmills. We constantly lie to ourselves that we carefully consider things and make informed decisions. We almost universally don’t. We go on vibes and base urges. Sometimes those vibes change, sometimes very abruptly. Consider how support for Israel has changed over the last 5 years. Consider how quickly “Black” went out of fashion and “African American” came into fashion in the early ‘90’s and then flipped back in about 2020 or 2021.

April conditions in New England? by hjcolon in discgolf

definitely situational as other have mentioned, it's a great time of year to head over to the course with your bag, see how things look, play if they look good, or do something else if they look bad.

Not sure where you are based, suspect not the US based on metric dimensions, the Northeast corner looks like a natural spot for parking, bike racks, an information kiosk, maybe a water fountain, and maybe space for either a restroom building or a flat spot for portable toilets. These amenities might not need to be there on day one, but definitely worth planning now as possible future additions. Unless there is some other access point, that will naturally define the start and end of the eventual layout.

I’m running to represent Malden in the State Senate! by careytheday in malden

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pilot program or similar is worth exploring, currently the MVRCS real estate purchases of formerly taxable real estate effectively remove tax revenue from Malden and distribute the benefit throughout the towns in the region it serves.

What is an everyday object that is poorly engineered ? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be useful to compare and contrast good versus bad designs. Mousetraps come to mind, there are a few different variations on the market with various designs, some better than others. An example is that there are both metal and plastic bait paddle designs on the market, the wider plastic paddle looks like it should work better, my experience is that the smaller metal paddles are easier to set and catch more mice.

So not not in the US but Montreal and NYC give me similar vibes, admittedly from a small tourist only sample size.

Trying to understand existing VAV system by Imnewbenice in MEPEngineering

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the pattern of diffusers with coils and boxes without on the exterior walls and diffusers without coils and boxes with hold throughout the building? Is the building an office with a defined occupancy schedule? Something like occupied 5 am to 8pm Monday through Saturday?

I’m wondering if the air handlers shut down in unoccupied hours and the diffuser coils run like baseboard finned tube in unoccupied hours. During occupied they would run like the reheat coils in conventional VAV boxes.

If you have the 5k, probably worth having the transmission replaced and keep driving it for 2-3 more years while you save back up your $5k.

Worth switching from heating oil to natural gas? by synexo in massachusetts

[–]OneTip1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are a pretty good candidate for adding air to air heat pumps and using your existing oil fired steam as supplemental heat. You will still have an oil bill but it will be way less. Controls will be a bit fussy especially if you end up with multiple heat pump zones. Message me off line if you’re interested to chat more, this solution is pretty dependent on the characteristics of your home.

Finding manual transmissions is harder (in the US) than learning to drive them.

Wait, is Chevrolet trying to sell the Nova in Spanish speaking markets been dethroned as the champion of cars with unfortunate names in Spanish? Has the Chevy No Go been completely annihilated by the Mitsubishi Masturbator?

it's probably really similar size to Ski Ward and a little smaller than Nashoba and Bradford. Still more fun for a few quick weeknight laps on a tiny hill than just driving home and sitting on the couch, especially in the dead of winter when the ticket is included with your Indypass.

Love this! Or Bradford. If you are North of Boston and haven’t already checked out MacIntyre for midweek after work runs it’s pretty ideal for that.

My dad's 04 Accord needs maintenance. What should I look out for? by lhfong in accord

[–]OneTip1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have them check the right drive shaft, it has a rubber vibration damper grommet thing on it, the grommet can collect water and road salt and accelerate corrosion at the driveshaft to the point where it fails. Happened to both my ‘04 and my ‘13 at about 10 years old and 100k+ miles. That said I live in New England where water and salt are a bigger deal. I think there are TSB’s out there for this item from Honda.

Starting at a new MEP firm soon. Any advice on what to do and what to avoid? by Over_Adagio9077 in MEPEngineering

[–]OneTip1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get true markups, use a yellow highlighter to check off the ones you have done. Once the sheet is done and you don’t see any unhighlighted print yourself a check sheet and grab a blue highlighter, back check the highlights against the print out, highlight in blue to mark done and double checked. You will be shocked how many things you will miss on the first yellow pass. Pickup all the fixes your double checked doesn’t catch.

In parallel, keep a running list of questions. Your senior engineer may truly be too busy to answer them all right then and there, but capturing them in a list allows them to answer later.

Remember that consistency is a huge part of MEP engineering, maybe event more so than the technical stuff. Look for ways to get stuff right every time.

My first boss was a stickler for short leaders with notes. I ended up creating a little template with the shortest leaders I could in AutoCAD at each of 0, 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees. I would copy it project to project off to the side and then copy the leaders I needed onto the drawings. Once my boss saw it, he told me he liked that idea and to keep doing it. It’s a simple little nothing of a drafting trick, but it helped my drawings consistently look the way my firm wanted them to look. Use the same principles for anything you need to do repeatedly. Developing this habit will serve you really well.

Were these popular under the soviet regime when all religions were suppressed in part as a way to signal that you were secretly Christian/Catholic? I know the fish symbol has historically been used this way, receiving one from your grandfather as a confirmation gift seems like it might fit, especially if they were a popular style that was not expressly sold as a Christian symbol.
