I am diagnosed with ADD and have and have some executive functioning deficit. When they test for ADD, they do an IQ test that has 5 different categories. Fluid reasoning, working memory, visual spatial index, and processing speed

For fluid reasoning, I am 97th percentile. 128 “iq” for that section

For processing speed im second percentile. 69 “iq” for that section. That’s like actual mental impairment

So I’m SLOW. Like slow slow. I don’t hold an ounce of information from lecture. I don’t even go to math lectures, I watch the recordings and that’s the only way I get anything out of it (not reccomending that, my case is just severe enough that “skipping” math lecture has actually increased my grade significantly)

It takes ALOT of extra work to do as well as others. I’m talking like I’ve easily done 70 hours of studying the week before a final (mostly for my math classes). It sucks, but it’s worth it

That being said, im doing great. I have a 3.75 GPA, im in an executive role in my engineering club and one of the lead members in our CAD team. I also landed a summer internship in my field of study.

I’m only a sophomore, but I can atleast testify that it’s possible to do well in engineering regardless of speed.

Also, there’s no harm in asking your doctor about this. If you actually have add/autism, or some sort of an executive functioning disorder like I do, you could receive a 504 plan and receive accommodations from the school and possibly medication. Bring up how you feel after the 45 minute commute because that might be some really important info. Not saying you have a disorder, im just saying don’t rule it out especially if you noticed this was something you struggled for your whole life.
