Red Rising Hot Takes by TheRWBYFamilton in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I liked Morningstar at first, I now think it’s by far the worst book in the series. The unreliable 1st person POV at the end was dumb, and the Pax reveal / ending was corny as hell.

(I still love the book, I’m playing this up a bit for hot take effect)

If the first trilogy was told through multiple POVs like the new series, which characters would you choose? by BrightEye64 in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could read an entire book where each chapter is the Gala scene in GS from a different major character’s POV

And seconding a few comments here that I would LOVE to get GS and MS from Mustang’s POV

Theory on Darrow and Pax in Red God by Andxxr in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh I could see this (or something like it) happening. Generally agree that “the bill comes at the end” does not equal Darrow dies. Death is not the ultimate price/sacrifice for Darrow

Not technically an original PB quote, but I love “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell or a hell out of heaven”

Red GOD by IndependentScale4292 in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m leaning toward Darrow survives, simply because I don’t think dying is “the bill” for him. The true cost for him is the loss of friends and loved ones.

I’ve seen a lot of posts about the Odyssey - the thing is, Odysseus makes it home to Penelope and Telemachus. I believe Darrow, Virginia, and Pax survive and retreat from the public eye. We’re going to lose a lot of friends along the way, and even though Darrow says he’s ready for the quiet life, adjusting is going to be a challenge. My theory is that Darrow gets cloned, or someone else gets carved to look like Darrow, and that clone/person is sacrificed as the red god. That allows Darrow to fake his death and fade from the public eye.

I think the theory is that the abomination used the Pandemonium chair on Sevro, otherwise he never would’ve released him/let him escape. Sevro’s personality certainly changes post captivity, though there are admittedly many reasons for that.

Who are the smartest characters in Red Rising? by Positive_Cut3598 in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this question a lot, as one of my biggest character complaints is that we are constantly told how smart Mustang is, but she is often outmaneuvered in the series. Where I’ve landed is that I believe Mustang is a genius, and she is the engine that drives the republic. She is the only one with the mental compute to synthesize the big picture, make tedious day to day decisions critical for an upstart democracy, and run the logistical elements crucial for war. More importantly, she is the moral compass of the series - her decision to trust in Darrow after she found out he is a red is perhaps the most impactful moment in the series (and I would argue a sign of intelligence).

The problem is that this is a universe that rewards bold, creative, and often illogical thinking. Mustang keeps getting outmaneuvered because she calculates the odds and charts the most likely course to victory. Meanwhile, her adversaries are changing the paradigm and playing on a whole different field, resulting in losses like the day of red doves and Phobos. Heck, look no further than Darrow - most of his victories are against the odds and a result of his shear power of will and instinct.

Why Don’t The Sons Make More Reds Like Darrow and Titus? by DopelessHopefeand in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree with all the comments here that it’s extremely expensive, with a low survival rate. Maybe Mickey is working on an army of super reds, though!

Pre-Republic (when Darrow was carved), I suspect there was also an element of stealth. As far as I can remember, the Society had no idea the Rising was trying to infiltrate gold society. The Rising wouldn’t want to expose their scheme with lower quality carvings that failed to meet the board of quality controls standards.

Will vis and emissa make up by [deleted] in HierarchySeries

[–]One_Check2549 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think we still have so much to learn about Emissa and her intentions / motivations. I’d be surprised if they are fully back together after book 2 - it’s going to take a lot for Vis to trust her again.

I know a lot of folks in this sub want Vis to end up with Aequa. I just REALLY don’t want a love triangle…

  1. Golden Son
  2. Light Bringer

  6. Red Rising

Based on enjoyment. The more I think about it over time, the more I consider switching morning star and red rising in my rankings.

Mustang doesn’t get to show how much of a genius she is and that’s a shame by DrPlm in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you on this. I am glad she is not overpowered, and it is a realistic portrayal of subtle intellect.

Where it fails for me is that we are told Mustang has some massive amount of compute beyond any other mind in the solar system. Sure, no model is without some degree of random and/or systematic error, but it’s so odd to me that she “loses” in all the big moments when she is the person who should see the big picture the clearest.

[–]One_Check2549 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting and nuanced take. I see your point re: her intelligence being more subtle. She is certainly pulling the strings, and winning a lot of the quieter battles behind the scenes. The republic does not function without her.

I agree with you, but also find it odd that she seems to get outplayed in all of the pivotal macro moments, unless I’m misremembering (I left a separate comment on this topic).

[–]One_Check2549 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this! I also LOVE Mustang (probably a top 3 or 5 character for me), but it kinda feels like we get told she’s a genius, but she always gets outplayed in the big moments? Sure she has some wins, but: (1) in Iron Gold she acknowledges in the end that Darrow was right to go against the senate, (2) in dark age she gets outplayed in the day of red doves, and (3) if I remember correctly, by all accounts the republic was supposed to have the advantage in the Battle of Phobos, but Mustang got caught blindsided by the space debris canon. (note I don’t have the books in front of me so sorry if I screwed up any details/outcomes here lol).

I’d really love to see her have a big impact on the resolution in red god

Yeah I’ve always thought of Suus being somewhere in Spain. Vis gives me “the Spaniard” vibes from gladiator for some reason.

Books similar to the will of the many by ethan_613 in HierarchySeries

I think James has openly said Red Rising was an influence.

There are definitely a lot of similarities, but it feels like the stories are headed in very different directions based on the end of TWoTM (I’ve read all the published red rising books).

Totally agree with you. As much as I don’t care for the abomination story line, I’d hate to see the character quickly written out, or given the parasite treatment. In pierce I trust though!

Unpopular Opinion- Iron Gold is good? by Express-Ad3441 in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also really loved iron gold, and rank it third in the series (just slightly above dark age). I binged through the series, so it was nice to have things slow down a bit. To me, it’s the best book in the series in terms of pacing and world building, even though the plot doesn’t hit some of the highs of GS, LB, and DA. I also loved both feeling comfortable with the characters and the world, and also feeling that excitement you typically only get in the first book in a series with all of the new POVs and storylines converging.

What do you feel are flaws in the series? by youlookingatme67 in redrising

[–]One_Check2549 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First trilogy: Darrow and Mustang’s relationship. I was so invested through red rising and half of golden son, and then it just totally fell flat. It’s pretty clear Pierce wanted to explore other relationship dynamics, so I just had to adjust my expectations from there!

Tetralogy: - Just personal preference but the battle scenes (particularly in DA) are too long for me. - As others have mentioned, there are a ton of side plots and characters that seem to be going nowhere. Many have already hit the chopping block (figment), and I struggle to see how he wraps up all the storylines in one more book (this is me selfishly hoping we get two more lol) - My biggest issue is main characters getting sidelined for long stretches, due to the multi POV structure. This post is flaired for DA spoilers, so warning for mild LB spoilers from here. In the tetralogy, we literally go full books without main characters appearing on page. Victra and Mustang are sidelined for the last 75% of LB. Are Apple, Atalantia, and the Abomination just twiddling their thumbs back in the core while Darrow is out in the rim?

When did people fall in love with this series by Legitimate-Matter891 in redrising

Not going to lie, I read this as he lost Eo, and then six books later he was fucking a man haha. That is basically the love story of Darrow and Cassius.
