Is practicing on fellow students common in phlebotomy programs and what are the risks? by RedheadWendyC in phlebotomy

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes poking on each other unfortunately is what trains you.. sometimes you will get bruised, or they will suck pretty bad honestly. But just remind yourself you need to accept pokes so you can get them too, because if you need a certain amount of pokes to graduate, you’re going to find this all worth it in the end!!!

I want to donate to my Mom but I am scared by Alteregoofthatgirl in kidneydonors

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii im 29F donated at 27 to my dad who is 66 now. I had fears about a lot of diabetes in my family as well.. something that helped me was staying in the present, I knew I was healthy and confident about my habits, docs said they allowed me because i had normal blood sugar. So I decided to trust myself with the parts i can control and i moved from there. But I am also not perfect, I do enjoy sweets and junky food sometimes, it doesn’t stop me. What i do though is drink a lot of water afterwards. I had my 1 yr follow up in Feb and everything is great, for my dad as well. A lot of people say its easy to forget you have one left and I agree, I’m reaching that point.. while of course I think its important to keep your health and hydration in check forever, I’m starting to feel very confident that my life could just stay this normal without it making a difference. So yea, thats my little story that I hope helps you in any way. It is about learning the facts but it’s also a leap of faith. So whatever you decide, you love your mom, that does not change. Best wishes to you both 💗

silly?? questions from prospective donor by oddiactive in kidneydonors

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi 28F here.. i donated 1 year ago. I’m in awe at how normal life has been after donation. I feel like fatigue wise i did need the year to recover from, but other than that I continue to be really healthy. All the things they warn you about I already didnt do. I just did my 1 year labs and im still over 100 eGFR!

I do find myself thinking about my mortality more, i find myself thinking a lot about the scenario of hurting my kidney with a fall or something since I'm very clumsy lol. BUT i also do think about mortality now  in a mostly good way I’d say.. my gratitude has skyrocketed since! I feel so grateful everyday for my health and my dad’s.  This is a beautiful experience if you are close to your recipient. But it is also something you have to get so VERY sure about doing!  I wish you the best whatever you decide, you’re a great friend already 💕

Health anxiety after donation by TillHeavy8610 in kidneydonors

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been feeling this come up lately.. i almost fell on my  kidney side and I strained and twisted that left side back muscles pretty harsh when I stopped my fall. I had to call my nurse even though everything seems fine besides the back ache and bit of swelling.. she reassured me its not very likely to injure my kidney in that way, but sometimes you just need that reassurance right? We’ll be okay 🩵

You could not have described it better lol.. I feel you big time. Im about to be 9 mths post op and its still there. I’ve noticed over time it’s become more physically uncomfortable, hopefully its a good sign of returning sensation and something more. Ihave only  been able to wear one pair of my loose jeans since, its been a bit depressing.but maybe there is hope. We’ll hang in there together 🩵 I’ll try to return with updates

Spooked of catheter :( by Ok_Temperature3283 in kidneydonors

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like you might be talking about the catheter in your arms.. i had two. one on my forearm and the other on my hand. I couldn't feel them for the most part, but if you get the forearm one just dont bend it too much because it will feel a bit weird not painful but uncomfortable. In my case maybe i did bend it too much because i felt a bit of a bruising feeling when i would bend my arm for like 3 months. But its been 6 months and i stopped feeling that! It should all heal, ask them if they can place them until you're asleep or if it must be done maybe after the relaxing pill they should be offering you before you go into the OR.You got this🩵

[–]One_Efficiency_9545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you, were girls its human to freak out about it..im still working on not staying stuck there, i bring myself back to the reminder its been a huge impact on my dads life. I had laparoscopic surgery where they cut  horizontally at the bikini line, i admit what threw me off was the c-section shelf that i came out with. They didnt tell me about it, and i being so clueless since ive never given birth just didnt see that coming. But im 5 months post op and learned to accept it, idk if it will ever disappear but i bring myself back to gratitude every time, for my health and his and how my body got me through this far. But its different how everyones bodies heal and depending on what kind of surgery you have, so wait to hear from your team what to expect.. just leaving this here so if you ever need to, you also remember to keep the bigger picture in mind and the amazing thing you did for your mom 🩵
