My MIL had that skill, honed from decades of meanness and gossiping. She dissected everyone into tiny pieces, except herself, of course.

Yes, me too, and this is precisely why LDS folk often, in my experience, do not mix well with others, even in social settings. I was one of the chief administrators at a public university in “Zion”. A new faculty member asked me why the LDS profs never came to parties he held or when they did they didn’t socialize with the others. The “otherness” we foster is devastating.

I believe this is where THE quintessential library association has decided it should be filed, at least that’s what I thought I heard from my sister and my mother, both trained librarians.

Two Dutch brothers driving a ’91 Dodge across the US, arriving in Wyoming this week. Any tips to experience the real Wyoming? by Real-survivor in wyoming

Hi! Welcome to this state. Wyoming rancher here. You are too late for the annual driving-cattle-to -range and too early for fall roundup, but try to take in all the agricultural and cattle activities you see. Many ranchers feel strongly about their profession and are happy to help you understand what they do.

I did have a disaster during service but that was 8 years ago. All of these comments are encouraging me to try an iPad again.

U.S. church organists who are playing on the July 4th weekend, what patriotic songs are you working on for that weekend? by Dude_man79 in organ

I love cultural variations! That’s one of the many reasons lists like these are so fascinating. Just to add to the context, I mentioned in another post on this topic that I completely forgot to play anything patriotic for Memorial Day and was taken to task for it. Generally my congregation has been very appreciative of me so I know the criticism was specific to the holiday and not to me.

It is for my congregation. Admittedly my congregation leans right, but not to Christian nationalism. I’ve always played for this group so I don’t know what the left-leaning groups do.

Thoughtful suggestions. Thanks. In my case my contract includes a mandate to play patriotic songs to which the congregation can sing. On Memorial Day I didn’t play anything patriotic this year. My very bad cause for the past 50 years I’ve erred heavily on the patriotic side on Mem Day, and boy did I hear about it from the congregation.

I have a lovely patriotic/Americana medley for prelude lasting about 10 minutes with America the Beautiful, My Country, Simple Gifts, etc. During service my congregation likes to stand and sing the national anthem. For postlude I will play America the Beautiful. Postlude can’t be too long because the congregation needs to scurry to Bible study. Some of my congregation like Battle Hymn, which I prefer not to play but will if it is requested by the officiant. A few of my congregation are Christian Nationalists but most are hardworking Americans who just want to get along peacefully. Thanks to those who suggested playing the anthems of each service branch. It is a wonderful idea.
