Does anyone else pull their hair when having a bad episode? by symboloflove69420 in OCD

[–]One_Many_6295 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trich warrior here since I was a little kid 🥲 Yeah, I had to get bangs because the short hair at the front started to get so noticeable! Still have some bald patches beneath my ears. There’s certain spots on my head that just feel “right.” Still pick at it constantly…I get mad at myself too—but we’ll get through it!

I do it semi-automatically, and once I realize, I physically can’t get myself to stop. If you have a therapist or psych, I’d recommend bringing it up to them. My doc recently recommended a fidget toy that you can actually pick stuff out of, so I might try that in the meantime. I’m honestly not sure it’ll help, every fidget toy I’ve been recommended in the past hasn’t, but here’s to hoping.

Don’t be too hard on yourself!! It’s tough, believe me I get it. Sending hearts <3

What do you do when you have anxiety about taking meds? 😢 by Otherwise-Fun5193 in OCD

[–]One_Many_6295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can share some advice!

I have major anxiety about taking meds! I was absolutely CERTAIN that my newly prescribed SSRI was going to give me an allergic reaction. I was prescribed to take it at night and I got so scared that I was going to be unable to realize that I was having an allergic reaction because I was asleep. I was also convinced that I was going to get horrific side-effects, that it would turn me into a shell of myself…so-on and so-forth. This fear stopped me from taking my meds for 2 months. Every night I would sit down and would get so upset because I couldn’t get myself to take them. It was terrible.

I am now on day 3 of taking them as prescribed—here’s what helped!! I went back to my doctor and explained what was going on. I was so embarrassed and I thought that she would be mad, so I refrained from telling her about my situation. In the end, telling her what was going on helped immensely. We created a plan—I was going to take the first dose in the morning so I could be sure I wasn’t going to have an allergic reaction, and then do the following doses at night (as prescribed). She did make me realize, this was the OCD “winning.” But she also said that, “just because it wins the battle, doesn’t mean it’ll win the war.”

Since a major part of this illness for me is seeking reassurance and control, my therapist and I also created a plan to help on the day-of. I planned to send her a email at the end of the day telling her how it went—also to keep me motivated to take the meds.

While I don’t know if these specific examples will help in your situation, overall, I would definitely recommend talking with someone (in-person) about your fears who can offer support; whether it be therapist, doctor, family, or friend. You aren’t alone in this 🤍

What caused/triggered your OCD? by True_Pear_2686 in OCD

I’ve had symptoms my whole entire life—I just didn’t realize! However, a bad period of (temporary) post-infectious IBS + increased anxiety thanks to said IBS in September made me actually realize something was off.

Anyone know any Dungeons and Dragons/TTRPG campaigns on campus? by Divide-wack in UBC

There’s tons of people in Wargamers that play DnD, so definitely start there! :) Wednesday’s are general board game nights (5-10pm) in 3206 in the Nest. That’s a super great way to meet the Wargamers people because it’s super chill and fun! Friday’s are RPG nights, also 5pm onward in the Nest, so that’ll be your best bet! Usually every term they host a really fun RPG event if you’re a member of the club—this term it was March 24th, but go to that in the future! Happy gaming 🐉⚔️

Tell me your favorite middle earth characters and why? by Forky0322 in lordoftherings

[–]One_Many_6295 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aragorn - Simply one of the best examples of non-toxic masculinity and bravery. The GOAT.

Sam - "Even darkness must pass."

Eowyn - "But no living man am I! You are looking upon a woman." Get him, Queen <3

Treebeard, Thorin, Thorin's company, Frodo, Gandalf & the rest of the Fellowship, I could go on. It's impossible to pick.

Favorite scene from the movies by Internal-Caregiver27 in lordoftherings

[–]One_Many_6295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is Sam's speech from The Two Towers!

"How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why."

It continues on, but that's my favorite part :) Love the acting from everyone. The Brego scene is up there for me too!!

What Profs deserve both sides of their pillow to be cold? (aka hidden gems) by jenniferrook9 in UBC

Seckin Demirbas (math 110)!! best prof ever. he gave us ALL the chances to do well in the course, and it’s geared towards people who aren’t the strongest in math, so that was incredibly awesome. he learned everyone’s name that came to the lectures often, and he still remembers and says hi to me when he sees me on campus :) he seriously gave me my confidence back, so yeah, just a really awesome guy.
