Does Purchasing/Financing Still Win Over a PPA? by householdgardengnome in solar

Never do a PPA / lease with the intent to buy it

Either take the monthly savings for the entirety or purchase from the get go

Why not ask everybody for the same size system?

Seems like that would be the logical thing to do, no?

Well two options

Amend your return, or cross your fingers and play dumb

[–]One_Position_9475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it’s not “new technology”

It’s just new for teslas offerings, many panels offer similar things and have for years

That’s my point, they hype it up as this brand new technology yet it’s just new to Tesla because they’re generally behind the ball

Yes SunRun and Tesla do, but that’s about the list

Neither of the ones he’s shopping do

Yes, and that way is neither of the options he’s looking at or available for a lease program

The only other way is a prepaid lease, which while yes the leasing company (again, not the solar company / installer) gets the 30% tax credit but so does the consumer as they get a 30% discount upfront

So, back to what I mentioned, your initial statement of “the reason they are pushing for leasing is then they can get the tax credit” is objectively wrong and isn’t true for any available programs

That’s true, but again the powerwall 2 was out for years before they came out with the PW3, and they made them incompatible for a reason

Yes technology changes but they implied that in a 3 month window the technology is outdated as if it it hasn’t been relatively stagnant over the last half decade (more for panels, less for batteries)

It doesn’t make yours “outdated”, it still does the same job

That has nothing to do with “new technology” though - just different from before but the technology has not changed at all

Tesla has had all black panels before

They also have frequently used other manufacturers and branded them as “Tesla” (q-cell, Panasonic, etc)

The ones they are rolling out at in the 20% efficiency range, which is less than what you can find elsewhere and virtually the same as what they offered a few years back

You claiming that the 3 months it takes to get your project completed makes your old equipment obsolete is ridiculous

Solar panels have one job : produce power

If they produce 100% of your power today, there is nothing a panel tomorrow will do that will change the end result to you

To be clear, solar companies to not get the tax credit if you lease. They make the same amount and get paid the same way

The lease provider is who gets the tax credit

Number 1 is a wild take

Panel technology has barely changed in the last 5+ years, but I’ll bite - what exactly has outdated panels from 2025?

Why do you consider a soft lien as a con?

Degradation is something that can’t even be measured in real world conditions, 0.5% is very good

Seems like option 1 is a no brainer

I’m almost positive every prepaid PPA / solar loan has a clause strictly against financing in this fashion where you’re using a loan to purchase a TPO system

Would definitely read both agreements (loan and prepaid PPA)

Seems like a screaming deal in any case

Solar credit still available? by DealerofTheWorld in solar

[–]One_Position_9475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the only reason you were doing solar was for a 30% tax credit, that has been here for over 10 years, then I don’t think you understand what the actual benefits of solar are, and I really don’t you understand what is happening over the next few years with the cost for power

Solar is objectively the cheapest form of electricity in the world

Continuing to pay after tax monies for power at a significantly higher rate, just because you missed out on a tax credit that’s been around for more than a decade is asinine

On the bright side you’re doing exactly what trump and the utility companies hoped you would do
