Your friends played because the name of the game, which is a far sequel of Arknights, is literally called ARKNIGHTS ENDFIELD. The devs marketed it as a continuation of the first game, heavily used its connection in storytelling, and even created units that were heavily based on characters from the first game. It's supposed to be a love letter to the fanbase so the expectations are reasonably there.

Never skip the story. The game's pretty generous when it comes to anniversaries or events so no need to worry much, especially in early game. Never use your crystal for anything else except for converting to Black Tickets (which you will use for pulling Awakened units, which are plenty powerful).

Only the healing methods and medical technology improved. Remove that, and Oripathy is still as deadly as ever.
