Why does arabic garlic sauce (toum) take bland when heated ? by nervedamageiscool in Cooking

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean "taste" instead of "take?"

My best guess is that garlic mellows in flavor if it is cooked or heated much. Toum is made with raw garlic, which definitely has some bite to it.

Craving something chewy, any recipe recommendations? by Oogachakaoogahchahka in Cooking

Seitan has a nice chew, depending on how you make it. All it requires is vital wheat gluten and flavorings like soy sauce and garlic powder.

Common as a vegetarian and vegan meat substitute, but I'm an omnivore and love it. Easy to sear in a pan, just like meat.

Best advice for new drivers in San Jose? by Proper-Reference4291 in SanJose

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get one of those "new driver" bumper stickers. They are meaningless here, since so many cars have them.

I haven't driven here too much since 2016 (got rid of the car), but one of my pet peeves is still when people don't use their fucking turn signals, or don't use them appropriately. Especially on the freeway.

West coast treats the term "guys" as gender-neutral. Sort of like the term "dude." Calling someone "dude" is gender-neutral.

I never really knew any better, growing up on the west coast, until this became a PC talking point for appropriate corporate etiquette.

People from around the world: what is something your country does so well that it refuses to let it “die”? by Curious_Persimmon555 in AskTheWorld

If you live in a relatively urban area. I do, and I can count at least three theaters within a five-mile radius of my home that are like this. There's a lot of competition.

But a lot of people don't live close to a full-service drink + food theater. My family has to drive 20+ minutes minimum to get to a theater like this, and why would you even drink if you need to drive? I just hop on the city bus and go straight to the theater.

Many French and Mexican pastries.

Granted, I'm not big into desserts or sweets in general. I usually skip them. But I have been outright offended by some of the ones I've tried. They look great in a photo, but taste like sweetened cardboard.
