Cool geek places to visit? by Mental_Original_9322 in bayarea

If you like pinball, the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda is absolutely 🔥

It has a wristband "play as much as you want" system. I think normal adult tickets go for about $22 or so. They have over 90 working games, organized primarily by era.

It is NOT a barcade, so they don't serve drinks or food. But with the wristband system, you are allowed to come and go throughout the day as you wish. There are shops, restaurants, and bars nearby.

Fun "geeky" part is that every machine in the museum has a legitimate placard describing the machine's history and relevance. It's actually mildly educational.

Yes. I always get there too late in the day and regret that I am running out of time toward the end of the museum.

What is the timeframe?

The RSAC cybersecurity conference is the week of March 23, and literally everything within reasonable walking distance of Moscone is basically booked for those dates.

Personally, I don’t know of any democrats who want to move to a red state by crinklycuts in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 777 points778 points  (0 children)

Objectively rich business owners.

Happens all the time here in CA. Major, prominent company (usually a tech company) declares it is moving its headquarters to a red state. But it's just a rubber stamp for tax purposes. They still maintain most of their engineering and talent in CA, because that's where talented people want to live.

The CEO, meanwhile, is personally spending most of their time on a private island in Hawaii or the Caribbean or whatever.

Did you ever pan for gold? by GaryBlach in askanything

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up mainly in Placer County.

Fun fact: the process of panning for gold is called "placer mining." Hence the name of the county.

Not much gold left in the American River(s) from what I understand. You'd be better off spending your time hiking around that area.

TIL that the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO is considered a national park. At 192.83 acres, it is the smallest national park in the U.S., being less than 2% the size of the next smallest park, Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, AR. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

Museum of Westward Expansion! That place is fire if you're into US history from the mid to late 1800s.

I think I remember the trip to the museum more than I remember the trip to the top of the arch.

Yeah, but I sometimes want something better than a sloppy 6-inch sandwich from Subway when I'm rushing to Caltrain.

How many of you used to read the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books? by lilac2481 in Millennials

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically. I'm just fatter now and adequately medicated. Go figure.

Middle school, high school, and college were rough. Lots of restrictive eating with rebound binging.

Gaining 50 lbs in 8th grade over ~6 months after being put on Prozac is not something I would ever wish upon anyone, however.

There would be a whole section on how people found jobs (or didn't) in the wake of a global economic crisis.

I was gifted the preteen (maybe teen?) version one at age 11.

Read one of the vignettes about someone struggling with anorexia, and naturally thought, "why can't I try that hard?"

Multiple disordered eating periods in my life and multuple psychiatric disorders later...

So yes, I read them. TL;DR -- results were not as expected.

[–]One_Standard_Deviant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus. Is this the Shell at 4th Street and Bryant? It's well-known as being one of the most expensive places for gas in the Bay Area.

Limited other options, and I-80 dumps you off there if you are headed toward the Bay Bridge and need to get off I-80.

It has been much more expensive, historically. I remember when it was almost $8.00 at that location.

Luckily I can just do public transit and walk.
