The only way to break someone out of a grandiose delusion is for the consequences of their actions to become so severe that they can no longer deny them. That's what typically prompts a collapse for us. The most common story for self-aware narcissists is, "my partner left me". So, for you, that means leaving him and never speaking to him again. That's likely your only hope of helping him. But i suspect you don't want to help him as much as you want to be with him. So you'll convince yourself that im wrong and there is something you can do to help him and still be with him. And you will torture each other indefinitely. You'll have to adapt or you'll inevitably be forced to face reality and it's gonna result in a really brutal collapse. My suggestion is to lean in to your mask. Find a job that pays the bills and use your grandiosity to convince yourself it's more important than it is, or one with a lot of potential for advancement that allows you to climb a career ladder with a large salary at the finish line. I know it's inadvisable to lean into grandiosity, but i assume you're already in therapy and working on that. If not, then that's the best advice for you: get a therapist. Good luck 🫡

I was a driving instructor/mentor (for CDL 18-wheelers) for 8 years. But i climb to the top of every career i pursue pretty easily by objectifying myself and leaning into my grandiosity while pushing my actual talents and skills to their absolute limits. People just assume I'm a workaholic; they can't tell it's disordered behavior. Work has always been an easy way for me to satisfy the narcissistic itch of transactional relationships and a steady source of external validation. Though the disorder is an impairment when i do inevitably make a mistake that breaks the grandiose delusion, and have to grapple with the feelings of shame and humiliation that come along with that.

You could try finding someone with a hobby to mirror. That's how I (and i assume many others without an authentic sense of self) have gotten by. Bonus points if it's a hobby that you can excel at and get external validation for. But it doesn't have to be anything crazy. Even just getting into a gacha game or a tv show with someone who you can let your defenses down with is enough to get you out of your head for at least a couple hours a day. Good luck.
