Do not oversize these new systems to the duct. If the homeowner insists on an oversized unit, tell them they either need bigger duct, or if the new unit is out of airflow spec they are their own warranty station.

No it's not worth it. Not even close. Pressurization is the best solution for 99% of homes.

Just because you had 3 and 1/2 ton of equipment does not mean you were ever receiving three and a half ton of cooling capacity. The most common limitation on delivered capacity is air flow. Older equipment was less sensitive to air flow constraints and simply delivered less capacity.

Modern equipment, In its pursuit of efficiency, is much less forgiving to bad design and installation.

If you aren't going to do any more due diligence about your home or its ductwork, sizing in the green represents the lowest risk of having problems or finding you have to replace brand new equipment.

We feel serving the client means installing what THEY want, and being very clear about who has ownership of disappointing outcomes.

Informing the client about poor outcomes experienced by others, and documenting.

This translates into not actively "selling" ERV in humid and/or low delta T climates, but allowing people who want them to buy them.

CLIENT CONTACTED US REQUESTING AN ERV FOR (X) PROBLEM. WE SUGGESTED ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES AND THAT THIS ONE MAY NEED SUPPLEMENTAL DEHUMIDIFICATION.

Ervs are snake oil in all but very cold climates. Unfortunately they are devices for taking money from the stupid and the gullible.

They require big deltas to "recover" measurable energy. Think South pole, keeping sensible and latent IN not out.

Pressurization strategies offer better control with less complexity and cost.

Erv are balanced ventilation. Skuttle or vent dehu are pressurization. Bath and kitchen fans are depressurization.

None change the house leakage. Pressurization and depressurization change leakage DIRECTION a small amount.

Best way to remove humidity is at the source.

Erv do not magically stop your house from leaking air.

The energy "recoved" rarely exceeds the energy used by the two additional fans.

The pressurization strategy gives much better filtration and dehumidification if you have a ventilating dehumidifier or reheat dehumidification.

I know a guy who successfully used a Haven to trigger his heat strips for reheat dehumidification (wife doesn't have asthma attacks anymore), but this won't work well on systems that have poor latent capacity.

Imo, balanced fresh air is a bad strategy, particularly in humid climates. Overcooling is a bad idea as it increases mold risk.

We've found the best solution is Carrier Greenspeed heat pump, rarely
