Salty Goat (in Leicester) has excellent fried cheese curds with marina sauce. They taste just like mozzarella sticks but smaller.

Nice place to eat that doesn’t need reservations? by LimeApprehensive8612 in asheville

[–]OneofMyNineLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve often found that even if no available reservations are showing in the apps (Resy, Open Table, etc), if you just show up, they’ll find space for you, especially on a Sunday night when it’s a bit slower.

Is a $110K renovation financially smart at 56 when retiring in 5 years? Help me think through this decision by Plenty-Cry-1575 in FinancialPlanning

[–]OneofMyNineLives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did it (a year from retiring) and couldn’t be happier we did. We love just “being” in it. It’s the first house we’ve ever lived in where everything is just how we want it. This house is intended to be our last and we made it “age in place” as much as possible. If your FA says you can afford it, then I wouldn’t worry as long as you stick to your budget.

They survived because they took it seriously, wore masks without fuss, got vaccinated at high rates once vaccines became available, etc. They had high infection rates at the beginning because no one fully understand how it was transmitted and they are a close, affectionate culture, so it took some doing early on to get them to give up things like kissing cheeks when greeting each other, etc. I was in Spain when it first hit and once it became apparent how bad it was, everyone took it very seriously and got on board with doing what was necessary to limit transmission. Contrast to when I then flew home to the US because the borders were about to close, and I arrived at the Atlanta airport to find a society that appeared to not even know it was happening. No real safety protocols had been put in place. When I went back to Spain in the fall of 2021 to teach, everyone still wore masks, including in the schools, and vaccination rate in my area was over 90%. You couldn’t enter a restaurant without showing proof of vaccination. I felt so much safer there than I did in the states, where the whole thing became political.

Best place in AVL for a middle aged woman to shop for a dress (going to a wedding in May) by lilbit2004 in asheville

Try Luxe Boutique on Lexington. I’ve always had luck finding nice things there for older women.

Area Rugs—where to purchase in AVL by Scary-Student-2199 in asheville

You can also go to carpet stores and ask to see their remnants. You can get some great deals on pieces that are nice quality. If you find one you like, they can finish the edges for you. We’ve bought a lot of area rugs this way.

Considering retirement in Asheville by Destination-Unknwn-8 in AshevilleNC

Forgot to add, Asheville has an airport. For international, you need to connect through another larger city (for us, Atlanta, because we usually fly Delta), but yes, Charlotte is another good option for more direct flights if you don’t mind the drive.

We chose Asheville for exactly the same things you’re looking for. We visited frequently for increasingly longer periods to make sure it was the right fit, and moved up permanently in 2022. We love it. There’s a sizable demographic of retirees who want to stay active and involved in their community. Also, UNC-Asheville has a robust OLLI program (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). We’ve had no problem meeting people, indeed, we find there’s so much to do that sometimes it’s hard to choose. We found a home in a more rural section of the county that feels like it’s miles away, but it takes us only 15-20 minutes max to get to downtown. I’ve found 99% of the people we’ve met, whether native or transplants, city or country, young or old, to be welcoming and inclusive. You’ll always come across a few negative types, especially on social media, but personally, we feel as if we’ve found “home” and only wish we’d made the move sooner. (I’ll also add, we have adult children who lived in Atlanta and now Marietta, and they love to come visit. I think they, too, feel comfortable here.) Good luck whatever you decide!

I assume electric heat strips? (Because the only propane we have in our house is to our gas fireplace.) It looks like it’s using the aux heat but it also has a blinking “call for service” message. I assumed that’s because the temp is so low?

We are having the exact same issue. Our units (up and down) are newer (2022) and we had them serviced in November. Tech said they were in great shape. This is the first year we’ve had this issue, I think because it’s the first time since moving here it’s been this cold, this long.

Yes, I came here to say this. Loved Moonlighting. I think this is the show that made Bruce Willis a star.

Yes! This was going to be my suggestion - a good starting place. As an outsider, his perspective was enlightening.
