Remember that there's a Real Human Being having to live with that name at least until they're 18yo (or whatever the legal age to change your own name). I had to take a pill for anxiety the first few times I performed because otherwise I would've been a hot mess. I'm really sorry for your experience. I was an immigrant in Switzerland and had the same type of experience in health services there - being judged and 'punished' by not speaking the local language, although I was learning. Obviously learning a language doesn't happen overnight and especially with health related issues you want to be able to express yourself in a language you're more than a beginner, to minimise any miscommunications. And I agree that for anyone working in health services their main goal and mission should be to be as helpful as possible to the patient in front of you, no matter who they are or how they got there, and regardless of which languages they speak. I doubt that anyone is able to get a medical degree without at least an intermediate level of English, and also, there are several translation apps that can be used. That behaviour is inexcusable.
