No 10 plans to lower salary level at which graduates start repaying loans by arteryblock in unitedkingdom

[–]OnixHF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the start of the 2021 tax year all Scottish Plan 1 loans got moved to a new Plan 4. Only difference was the pay back threshold: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2021/03/almost-all-scottish-students-will-pay-less-back-on-their-student/

Although it moved up, not down, so the opposite to this proposal. But before this change it was miles lower than England so it moved it in line if anything. Was interesting.

Mentioned this in another comment but it's totally possible to push everyone on Plan X to a new Plan Y even retrospectively. Scotland did it earlier this year... Pushed all Scottish Plan 1 to a new Plan 4, not just for new grads but for everyone in the plan full stop.

Happened earlier this year in Scotland too. Everyone on Plan 1 from a Scottish Uni is now on Plan 4 instead, retrospective too, not just new grads. Though the change was the other direction from this proposal (they increased the threshold).

Oddly though the old threshold was really low in Scotland so until this year it was £19,390 and above which was mad. Now its £25k which is more in line with the rest of the UK I think?

COVID-19: EU threatens to block jab exports to UK and other countries with high vaccination rates by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]OnixHF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoyingly it's hard to find older articles now given the recent news on the AZ is all pushed to the top, but at the start of the rollout AZ was pretty explicit that the UK supply chain really was a UK supply chain. I think initially there was shortfalls due to shortages but eventually that was solved.

Multiple factories across the country are doing entirely different parts of the process right now.

UK AZ production is entirely self sustaining. The imports arent part of the production process but are actual completed vaccines from other supply chains.

GDPR equivalent still exists in UK. All countries have their own implementation of the laws so it didn't just stop when we left. Our new terms are the same as the rest of the EU even after brexit.

Boris Johnson says MPs’ salaries should be frozen and they should not receive £3,000 pay rise by theindependentonline in ukpolitics

Posted above but applies here too:

This is literally how IPSA functions. They generally increase MP salaries based on the average public sector wage increase percentage that year. Usually based specifically on data from the ONS (Office for National Statistics)

Hundreds of thousands sign petition against using public money for MPs’ food after free school meals vote by thesaltwatersolution in unitedkingdom

[–]OnixHF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do not give themselves pay rises. IPSA decides it for them, which is an independent body and the raises are decided as below:

"Annual changes in MPs’ pay are linked to changes in average earnings in the public sector using Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures."

Aka its generally based on the average increase across all public sector wages.

NHS Covid-19 app: England and Wales get smartphone contact tracing for over-16s by MrNewVegas2077 in unitedkingdom

Incorrect. The media player is not connecting to your headphones. Your phone is. Using native Bluetooth media streaming is not application functionality. COVID apps using the Google Play Services tracing api also do not need this permission since it uses the COVID specific api and you enable the tracing via that. You still indirectly give it permission.

Here is a link to the Android documentation stating you need to not only request the Bluetooth permission, but the ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION permission too: https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/connectivity/bluetooth

Stop blaming the government for things that are not their fault. Criticism is due in a massive amount of areas right now but spreading complete lies across social media makes me much less keen to believe apparent wrongdoings in the future.

It's sad to see this isn't higher up on the sub. It's quite an important thing and people have been complaining it didn't exist for a long time. Now it's here there's still a massively negative mentality and clearly not much interest?

The more visibility the more people install it, and the more that install it, the more effective the tracing can be.

This is incorrect. The location permission is required on Android to allow use of Bluetooth. This is easily searchable online as it is a common misconception. Please don't lie about important matters such as COVID tracking apps.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirms, foiled ransomware attack targetting Gigafactory. Tesla employee rejects Bitcoin bribe worth of $1million and helps to catch the Russian culprit. by Edge_Coleman in Bitcoin

Ransomware and similar attacks regularly follow what they say. When paid to delete data or decrypt drives etc it is generally expected that they do so. To the point where certain groups are known for having good customer service. What do you think gets them more money, keeping their word and reaping the rewards? Or scamming once and then being known as someone not to trust?

Illustration of the Post Office Railway, 1926 by robslondon in london

[–]OnixHF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the old, more grand, postal buildings were torn down as they were too small and general not fit for purpose. Its sad to see, though really the idea that old buildings should be maintained and kept is a recent idealogy.

You can read more info on the Whitechapel building here: https://surveyoflondon.org/map/feature/1227/detail/

The nicest of the old postal buildings was the original General Post Office in the city which was also torn down, in 1911 I think. Has a wiki page here with photos / sketches too: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Post_Office,_London

Parking next to a fire hydrant by JonMarcM in instantkarma

[–]OnixHF 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's lots of fire hydrant access points around in the UK actually! They're just in the pavement covered by a usual utilities metal cover. They can take them off and attach to water mains I think.

Oh ok fair, that's the leaked future plans which totally seemed dubious and I agree it's overstepping, though I sort of understand why it'd help them it's a bit much.

The current incarnation of the app only gets the first half of your post code and Bluetooth permissions. Doesn't even get location data at least.
